I was stationed with the US Air Force at Goose Bay, Newfoundland, in the middle of Labrador, on the balmy banks of Lake Melville way back in the late 70s. This song reminds me of then and how little I felt homesick so far from my home. I'm proud to be an honorary Newfie...got well Screeched in, kissed a cod and bought canned bear meat and Ritz crackers at the Hudson Bay store in Happy Valley...do I qualify for citizenship?
Such a beautiful song b'ys.. I appreciate the good work you did on singing that and filming...also I hope I can meet you someday Sean...I am a huge fan of you...makes me shed a tear or two every time I hear it...or maybe three
Lyrics We were far from the shores of England Far from our children and wives To play our hand in the Newfoundland Where the wind cuts like a knife We were far from the shores of England We shipped on board the Maryanne To find a better life And we walked across the water When she broke up on the ice We came ashore in Carbonear With nothing but our rights I wondered if I e’er again Would see my London Lights We were far from the shores of England Far from our children and wives To play our hand in the Newfoundland Where the wind cuts like a knife We were far from the shores of England We spent our days amid the waves Working water hook and twine We’d go for weeks with blistered cheeks Waiting for the sun to shine As long as the sky holds over us We will not taste the brine And we’ll first the cod with the fear of god As we haul in every line We were far from the shores of England Far from our children and wives To play our hand in the Newfoundland Where the wind cuts like a knife We were far from the shores of England Far from our native soil To chase a wish and hunt the fish and on the rocks to toil We were far from the shores of England Should we find fortune’s favour And be spared from the gale We will live off honest labour With our hearts as big as sails If I should die don’t bury me Or leave me to the sea Send my bones back to my home Where my spirit can be free We were far from the shores of England Far from our children and wives To play our hand in the Newfoundland Where the wind cuts like a knife We were far from the shores of England Far from our native soil To chase a wish and hunt the fish And on the rocks to toil We were far from the shores of England
Beautiful, sweet, and simple. Séan, Bob, Kris, and Murray were so humble, articulate, and eloquent in their presentations. Alan was annoying with his usual scene-stealing attempts.
@@AuntieMHere Wow, funny, I never noticed any of that when I watched the video. You expect a musician to sit perfectly still when performing and not be one with the music? Incredible.
@@JenniferMawhinney Alan's actions were incongruent with the setting and the song, as well as incompatible with the others' composure. They weren't at a concert doing "When I'm up I can't get down," where sitting still would be incongruent. AD simply has a need to focus attention on himself at all times.
Hiding HUH? He stands out all right, weaving, tossing his head about and almost falling off the chair. Stoned for days. Won't take his bipolar meds so he can't get down.

These Guys Really Like Montreal. Lucky!
Still listening and watching in 2019
It felt like Sean was singing right to me!!! Such a personal way to upload a video. Thanks for doing this By's.
For me it felt like I am on a video call with him and he sang that song to me
I do love your music. This is s beautiful song.
Lyrics
We were far from the shores of England
Far from our children and wives
To play our hand in the Newfoundland
Where the wind cuts like a knife
We were far from the shores of England
We shipped on board the Maryanne
To find a better life
And we walked across the water
When she broke up on the ice
We came ashore in Carbonear
With nothing but our rights
I wondered if I e’er again
Would see my London Lights
We were far from the shores of England
Far from our children and wives
To play our hand in the Newfoundland
Where the wind cuts like a knife
We were far from the shores of England
We spent our days amid the waves
Working water hook and twine
We’d go for weeks with blistered cheeks
Waiting for the sun to shine
As long as the sky holds over us
We will not taste the brine
And we’ll first the cod with the fear of god
As we haul in every line
We were far from the shores of England
Far from our children and wives
To play our hand in the Newfoundland
Where the wind cuts like a knife
We were far from the shores of England
Far from our native soil
To chase a wish and hunt the fish and on the rocks to toil
We were far from the shores of England
Should we find fortune’s favour
And be spared from the gale
We will live off honest labour
With our hearts as big as sails
If I should die don’t bury me
Or leave me to the sea
Send my bones back to my home
Where my spirit can be free
We were far from the shores of England
Far from our children and wives
To play our hand in the Newfoundland
Where the wind cuts like a knife
We were far from the shores of England
Far from our native soil
To chase a wish and hunt the fish
And on the rocks to toil
We were far from the shores of England
This is utterly beautiful and breathtaking. Thanks for filming and posting!

"It cuts like a knife."
How does Allen play guitar? His hands are huge.
@Dong Thurman: Hi Lynda! Are you still following Alan around the world and speculating about the size of his "boat"?
@@AuntieMHere 😅
Bob looks like he stumbled out of bed
Yo it actually does lol
This song is way cool, these guys are great except the guy in the back is so stoned he can't remember the chords and almost drops his guitar.
Alan stoned?
@@howie9751The guy in the back is way stoned.

Alan was chillin' in the back. Did we watch the same video? lol
Huh? Alan was doing no such thing.
@@JenniferMawhinney Alan was jerking around, shaking his hair... performing. Everyone else was respectful and still... as they focused on the song.

Great song, great voice, but Alan Doyle has such a presence. Even hiding in the back he stands out.
