Soviet fantasy is far way better than so called Disney movies. I love all of the fairytales in my childhood.they are just amazing! I hope they will remake them all in live action like the frog princess, vasilisa,the golden feather of finist,prince Ivan etc
I wish that Walt Disney's SLEEPING BEAUTY (1959) was a Russian Folklore and SLEEPING BEAUTY would go on to become Russia's best storytelling of all time!
I'm a huge fairy tales fan and the Soviet movies depicting them (weirdly enough) have a truckload of very good ones. There are loads of good old ones in general. Somehow, so many old Czech, East Germany, Soviet etc. create a goood fantasy feel. Here are my recommendations, I hope people will discover more of them: - The Twelve Months (1972 film) I rewatch this and the Three Nuts for Cinderella every year on New Years. - After the Rain, on Thursday (1985 children's fantasy film) - Aladdin and His Magic Lamp (1967 film) - About the Little Red Riding Hood (1977 film) I liked it even before I knew what a "deconstruction of the genre" was) - Charodei (1982 film) fantasy romantic musical - Finest, the brave Falcon (1976 film) - Fire, Water, and Brass Pipes (1968 film) - The Golden Key (1939 film) - honestly it is my favourite version of Pinocchio - The Donkey's Hide (1982 Soviet version of the French fairy tale) - Mio in the Land of Faraway (1987 adaptation of Astrid Lindgren's book with a cast of British, Soviet and Scandinavian actors) it's way darker than the usual fairy tale and that's why I loved this film so much when I first saw it as a kid. - The Stone Flower (1946 film) one of the saddest stories. After watching the movie, I found the stories it was based on and it was sadder but so good. It depicts what an artist would do to reach perfection in his craft. - The Tale of Tsar Saltan (1966 film) + the Soviet animation version are both great and oneof my favourite ballads ever, along with "Ruslan and Ludmila" For some of these I could not find an official English title so I did m best to translate them myself: - The Scarlet Flower ( Аленький цветочек, 1977 fairy tale movie. Basically a version of the "Beauty and the Beast" and it's great) - The rider of the golden horse (Всадник на золотом коне, 1980 musical fairy tale based on Bashkir folklore) - The city of masters (Город Мастеров, 1965 adventure film with some fantasy elements) - Maria, Mirabella (Мария, Мирабела, 1981a romanian and Soviet collaboration film combining live-action with animation) - On the golden porch were siting ...(На златом крыльце сидели, 1986 fairy tale with a bit of more modern elements) - The Black Wizard's gift (Подарок чёрного колдуна, 1978 fairy tale film) - The Princess and the Pea (Принцесса на горошине, 1977 fantasy film based on several fairy tales. In a way it's like there are several stories in a story) Some of my favourite German Fairytales: - The Singing Ringing Tree (1957 film) - The Goose Princess and her Trusty Horse, Falada (Die Geschichte von der Gänseprinzessin und ihrem treuen Pferd Falada, the 1988 version of the Goose Girl fairy tale by Brothers Grimm filmed in Germany. It is one of my absolute favourites and can never get tired of it).
I am also great fun of russian literature and fantasy films. I'll try to find the ones you mentioned. there are hwo impacted me: - Titans from Mongolia - The treasure from the Witches island. - Lileya, the pond fairy. I am searching them for many years without result.
Father Frost is one of the classics. Watch it every year for christmas. I was born in the GDR, so we got see a lot very cool, largely underrated fairy/tale movies made in GDR, Tchechoslowakia and the USSR. Three haselnuts for cinderella is a beautiful GDR/Tchech collaboration.
Ironically some OG versions of Russian movies dubbed in GDR were lost. Example Semurg, an Uzbekfilm fantasy. Though I distinctly remember watching it in Russian, only copies I find online are in Uzbek or German.
Noémi Tamás They announced Он Дракон 2 , but never seen around, frankly I would prefer none, sequels and prequels can be awful sometimes and ruin also the perception of the original story based on a Russian novel Ritual (Ритуал). If you have a 3D tv/projector try to find the bluray 3D (now rare I found one) although it is only in Russian/German no Eng subs, not a big problem if you already know the story.
STORY OF VOYAGES (1983) is a must-see masterpiece! This is not so fantasy, rather a grim and sad medieval parable. Was not excited, seeing this in my childhood, but looked recently and it strikes me through.
Vyi 1976 was the first movie to scare me as a kid, to the point where I couldn't sleep the night after I watched it. The witch flying in her coffin was spinning in my mind all night.
i grew up with these movies, as a child born in the formal gdr it was the best time to watch them on tv. golden horns was my favorit. but also the sovjet version of the snow queen.
I've been fascinated with this kind of genre since I was a kid, especially, those made in the early days of cinema regardless of what country the fantasy movie came from. Thanks to your list, I'll go and watch these.

Thanks so much for your efforts and research with this video blog! Also, thanks to all who have added their folklore/fairy tale film and Slavic history expertise in the comments! I am looking forward to seeing these new recommendations, as I have only seen "Viy", and a couple of the other films that were mentioned in the comments. I have seen many, many fantasy, sci-fi, and horror movies over many years. Even though my major influence has been with USA/Canada and British/UK films, I do have some small exposure to these folklore/fairy tale films of Slavic/USSR/Russian origin. Some recommendations of great fantasy films/tv productions I have seen (beyond the Slavic titles already mentioned): Queen of Spades (Pikova dama) - several productions have been filmed of this short story by Alexander Pushkin, and the definitive version is said to be the British production (1949). Leptirica (TV movie; 1973; Alt-title: The She-Butterfly) is a great Yugoslavian film production. I enjoyed watching this fantasy/horror film. The "Cannon Movie Tales" series, nine feature films based on classic fairy tales were produced for the Cannon Group in the mid '80s. All of the films featured well-known actors from the U.S. and U.K. and were shot on-location in Israel. I really enjoyed watching these: Hansel and Gretel (1988) Snow White (1987) The Frog Prince (1986) Shelley Duvall's "Faerie Tale Theater" (TV series; 1982-1987) had some amazingly well-done episodes. There are 27 episodes total, including "The Snow Queen", "The Pied Piper of Hamelin", etc. Merlin (TV mini-series; 1998; 3 episodes) was the best and most comprehensive King Arthur story I have seen to date. Exquisite fantasy film! More Than a Miracle (1967; Alt-title: C'era una volta) is a lesser known Italian/French version of Cinderella starring Sophia Loren. A memorable film. P.S. - please consider making a separate video blog on Christmas-themed films worldwide. I especially love the Christmas films that center around fantasy themes (as opposed to just romance), mainly because they focus more on bringing the good -- the Light of miracles and magic to help when people are facing real challenges in their lives.
I actually grew up on these Slavic cartoon/live action fairytale/fantasy movies. Though I'm not Slavic! My grandparents would always buy me the Soviet era movies, such as The Snow Queen, Vasilisa the Beautiful, Viy (I own both of the modern remakes), The Little Humpbacked Horse and the Russian version of The Little Mermaid from 1976 (?) and those were some of the most magical movies - I've ever seen

Просто вы не интересуетесь фильмами, а их не раскручивают рекламой. Из фентези, например, есть сериал "Территория" на основе коми-пермяцких легенд. Причем это именно фентези, в данном ролике всё-таки о сказках рассказывали.

If you're up to fantasy subgenres, like science or low fantasy, there's Soviet late 80es "Hard to be a god" and "Witches labyrinth", and Russian "Day/Night Watch", and "Dark World". Although they are pumping out fantasy recently, there were few past year I haven't seen yet.
Mystery Science Theater riffed on four "Russo-Finnish" films - The Day The Earth Froze; Sadko (translated into English as The Magic Voyage of Sinbad, but he's not Sinbad); Sword and the Dragon; and Father Frost (also dubbed as Jack Frost). And they were all probably the best made films of the entire series. The films are just so completely weird and out there that the guys said they HAD to do them. And not all of that is due to the English dubbing. When they adapt more European fantasies into a Russian form (like Father Frost), they just come out as completely oddball. For instance, Father Frost also has an appearance by Baba Yaga, but the English translation refers to her as the "Hunchback Fairy" for some reason, which REALLY tickled Mike and the Bots. Can't understand why, however - it's not as if "Baba Yaga" is protected by copyright. Still, these films are just a lot of fun, and I wish we had better copies of the original films in the States so I could watch them uncut.
We know a lot of Russian tales in iran it's kinda mixed with Azerbaijani and tabarestani fairytales with different names of course I love the last warrior they dubbed and shown in Iranian TV and it was so funny I really wanted to see a sequel

You might be interested to track down a series of articles I wrote for a magazine called OUTRE in the later 1990's about 'Soviet-era Russian "FANTASTIKA"...although my writings/research spanned some 17 issues. (I think an older version of the promo reel for my projected documentary about this subject, RED FANTASIES, may still be find-able on YT (I still don't know who originally posted it....maybe from our old website?) We screened it at Lincoln Center for the launch of a series of Soviet-era Fantastika we put together with Seagull Productions, FROM THE TSARS TO THE STARS (my maybe overly playful, but fairly descriptive title). Back in the 80's when I first started the research it was crazy difficult to even trace down titles, much less actually find a way to see these works! (Traveled to Russia several times to locate materials, do interviews etc...and screen films that were all but falling apart at Gosfilmofond archive....But now, here so many of these films are, right here on ye olde youtube!) Anyway, thanks again! Always enjoy seeing how this one-time obscure interest/project has gained at least some following and appreciation!
I would also say that most Americans aren’t also familiar with Central European folktail. The only European folklore that most Americans are familiar with would be Western European folklore

Oh, man, little did you know. This and last year Russian cinema exploded with fairytales! Two hundred thousand ready, another million on the way. Not all great, imo, but some worth a try at least.
Thank you for making this video. However, as the native Russian and Ukrainian speaker, I must add some (perhaps, totally insignificant) corrections. The sound that is traditionally represented in English transliteration as kh is not k, by any possible means. This is voiceless English h - the trick here is that English h is produced deeper in the throat (English h is glottal fricative), while Russian h aka [x] is velar fricative and so produced closer to the entrance, so to say. In practice it means that in English especially when put between the two vowels (listen to how Tom Jones pronounces aha in the song Sex Bomb, for good example), h obtains a g-like sounding quality, gets voiced somehow. In Russian, however, that h=kh=x is always voiceless. So, certainly Khoma does not sound like coma... It's Homa and Soloha - but again it's Soloha with a totally voiceless h, which is probably unusual for an English mouth to pronounce. And it's dee-kanka, not die-kanka.

Done some digging. As stated in opening credits, movie went through restoration (rerecording of music and dialogues)in 1980. Sadly, Stolyarov (protagonist actor) died in 1969, so another actor voiced his lines. Strangely, Millyar who returned for Kashchei part, didn't voice the little mushroom man. Okay, so in that clip at 12:38 from Sadko, I _swear_ I've seen that dude before, but it was like.... from an MST3K episode? Maybe? I'm really unsure here, but whatever that is, is it part of a series? I've never seen Sadko but I definitely want to now because that is gonna kill me... EDIT: I just looked it up myself. It was _the English version of Sadko,_ dubbed & reworked by Roger Corman (and *Francis Ford Coppola!?* Are you for real, Wikipedia?); "The Magic Voyage of Sinbad" So yeah, personally, my exposure to Soviet or Slavik fantasy has been pretty limited - and oftentimes, framed through the lens of MST3K (such as with, "The Sword and the Dragon" - which Wikipedia tells me is actually called "Ilya Muromets"). But when I have seen their films, I've found their brand of fantasy and fairy tales to be fascinating and often endearing despite, or because of, the low budget. This was a really cool topic to cover and I'll definitely be checking some more of these out throughout the month here on TH-cam... and I would love to see you tackle a list of _animated_ fantasy films from the region sometime as well, since you spoke of Disney so much in this video. A few years ago, I knew _Frozen_ reworked the story of the Snow Queen *into oblivion* so I wanted to see if there were any faithful adaptations online and sure enough there was... and it's this Soviet animation from 1957. Interestingly, it is theorized that Pushkin's Ruslan and Lyudmila also contains vague Celtic influences due to the spreading of folklore studies and pseudo-folklore works.
And I looked it up on the Russian language version of Wikipedia and it;s true, although it said that the on-screen adaptation of Pushkin's probably first major narrative poem written in 1820, was made in 1914, the year that the Great War or World War I began. Руслан и Людмила (фильм, 1914).
One my favorite movies is I Am Dragon. It's not a soviet film but it is a Russian film. It's very good. It emphasizes the need for both masculinity and femininity. It displays why they are equally important.

I have a vague memory of watching a move or television series that was English dubbed I think. I was so young that I can't remember the title. It's about two sisters or two girls, one is called "wild" or something. She's a bit different than the other sister in some magic related way. And I remember there's a prince she's in love with, and he has to slay a dragon. I have tried to find the title of the show for the longest time, but I haven't had luck...

As a russian citizen grown on USSR made fairytale films i should say that none of those made after approximately 2000 worth to watch. Most of them are just parasitizing on Russian folklore classics! This "last bogatir" is just another tastless chewing gum which you will immediately spit after watching. Films made in USSR and early 90s Russia had a soul which all those modern "reboot" attempts does not!
Yeah, it was re-dubbed and edited by Roger Corman (Francis Ford Coppola helped edit it) and called the Magic Voyage of Sinbad. I haven't seen the corman version but pretty sure the original is better.

There are many good and good fairy tale films. But, for example, the movie in this review, The Last Knight, is disgusting. Created not for an instructive story, not for a magical atmosphere, not even for children, but for earning money and a stupid show.((
None of this stuff has been part of the West's tradition so let's dismiss w/ the Disney bashing. To ridiculous charges of "most of these films didn't see any release in America" - what Russian films today see "release in America" - much less eighty years ago during the Studio System w/ the Studios released their titles to their own movie houses? What Chinese films saw "release in America"? What Japanese films, apart from a redubbed and edited "Gojira"? And on the flipside of your coin, what American films saw release in the USSR?
Off the top of my head, My Fair Lady, Cactus Flower, Three Days of the Condor, and Capricorn One were all shown in the USSR. There were others too, but I can't remember them. Not too bad for an evil, insulated empire.
@@dmitol1631 I was married to a former Soviet, her father was a colonel in their Air Force (which unlike ours was a function of their Army) and her grandfather a WWII hero (to them the Great Patriotic War - basically a war where we saved their asses with Lend-Lease because FDR was a fellow traveler w/ Soviet spies in State Dept). She never saw ANY American films. Hot water was rationed and only available 2 times a week in a major city (Riga) and at school when it was cold (which was most of the year) the staff would inspect the back of the kids' ankles to bust those who refused to take a cold bath and instead just wipe down before school (they would miss their ankle backs typically). They had one state toy store with two dolls to choose from. She didn't even know what a vegetable peeler was when I met her in the Nineties in NYC at work, they peeled w/ knives. Their home photos from the 1980s used the same black and white film stock as my grandparents' used in the 1950s. In their nightclubs in Moscow in the 1980s they were still using reel-to-reel when we had CDs. She told me the very worst roads in America were like the best roads in the former Soviet Union (and you needed papers to drive down many of them). Her uncle died at 34 from alcohol poisoning from their making illegal alcohol (Samogon) to get around Gorbachev's anti-alcohol policies because drunkeness was rampant everywhere. When the USSR fell apart these people, who had been a deep freeze for 100 years, didn't even know how to write a check. So let's not romanticize the Evil Empire, the first nation in history to kill more of its own people than died in war.
@@ВалентинаЮрко-е3х Sure you were. Yes I am sure RAMBO and other Cold War films in which we defeat the criminals of the Evil Empire like FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE were just huge hits there. HAHAHA. They banned Western movies, books, even music. Very few things like WIZARD OF OZ and THE SOUND OF MUSIC made it through Soviet ministry of culture. Only after Gorbachev's 1985 perestroika and glasnost and the rise of pirate videotapes did things open up. Now it is the other way around. It is Hollywood who has put a ban on them for their barbarism in Ukraine and Putin who is saying it is their right to have Western movies.

My childhood's favourite - Илья Муромец, Ptushko's 1956 debut. It was adapted to English as The Sword and the Dragon in 1960.
Soviet fantasy is far way better than so called Disney movies. I love all of the fairytales in my childhood.they are just amazing! I hope they will remake them all in live action like the frog princess, vasilisa,the golden feather of finist,prince Ivan etc

I'm a huge fairy tales fan and the Soviet movies depicting them (weirdly enough) have a truckload of very good ones. There are loads of good old ones in general. Somehow, so many old Czech, East Germany, Soviet etc. create a goood fantasy feel. Here are my recommendations, I hope people will discover more of them:
- The Twelve Months (1972 film) I rewatch this and the Three Nuts for Cinderella every year on New Years.
- After the Rain, on Thursday (1985 children's fantasy film)
- Aladdin and His Magic Lamp (1967 film)
- About the Little Red Riding Hood (1977 film) I liked it even before I knew what a "deconstruction of the genre" was)
- Charodei (1982 film) fantasy romantic musical
- Finest, the brave Falcon (1976 film)
- Fire, Water, and Brass Pipes (1968 film)
- The Golden Key (1939 film) - honestly it is my favourite version of Pinocchio
- The Donkey's Hide (1982 Soviet version of the French fairy tale)
- Mio in the Land of Faraway (1987 adaptation of Astrid Lindgren's book with a cast of British, Soviet and Scandinavian actors) it's way darker than the usual fairy tale and that's why I loved this film so much when I first saw it as a kid.
- The Stone Flower (1946 film) one of the saddest stories. After watching the movie, I found the stories it was based on and it was sadder but so good. It depicts what an artist would do to reach perfection in his craft.
- The Tale of Tsar Saltan (1966 film) + the Soviet animation version are both great and oneof my favourite ballads ever, along with "Ruslan and Ludmila"
For some of these I could not find an official English title so I did m best to translate them myself:
- The Scarlet Flower ( Аленький цветочек, 1977 fairy tale movie. Basically a version of the "Beauty and the Beast" and it's great)
- The rider of the golden horse (Всадник на золотом коне, 1980 musical fairy tale based on Bashkir folklore)
- The city of masters (Город Мастеров, 1965 adventure film with some fantasy elements)
- Maria, Mirabella (Мария, Мирабела, 1981a romanian and Soviet collaboration film combining live-action with animation)
- On the golden porch were siting ...(На златом крыльце сидели, 1986 fairy tale with a bit of more modern elements)
- The Black Wizard's gift (Подарок чёрного колдуна, 1978 fairy tale film)
- The Princess and the Pea (Принцесса на горошине, 1977 fantasy film based on several fairy tales. In a way it's like there are several stories in a story)
Some of my favourite German Fairytales:
- The Singing Ringing Tree (1957 film)
- The Goose Princess and her Trusty Horse, Falada (Die Geschichte von der Gänseprinzessin und ihrem treuen Pferd Falada, the 1988 version of the Goose Girl fairy tale by Brothers Grimm filmed in Germany. It is one of my absolute favourites and can never get tired of it).

Father Frost is one of the classics. Watch it every year for christmas. I was born in the GDR, so we got see a lot very cool, largely underrated fairy/tale movies made in GDR, Tchechoslowakia and the USSR. Three haselnuts for cinderella is a beautiful GDR/Tchech collaboration.

Ironically some OG versions of Russian movies dubbed in GDR were lost. Example Semurg, an Uzbekfilm fantasy. Though I distinctly remember watching it in Russian, only copies I find online are in Uzbek or German.

They announced Он Дракон 2 , but never seen around, frankly I would prefer none, sequels and prequels can be awful sometimes and ruin also the perception of the original story based on a Russian novel Ritual (Ритуал).
If you have a 3D tv/projector try to find the bluray 3D (now rare I found one) although it is only in Russian/German no Eng subs, not a big problem if you already know the story.

Vyi 1976 was the first movie to scare me as a kid, to the point where I couldn't sleep the night after I watched it. The witch flying in her coffin was spinning in my mind all night.

i grew up with these movies, as a child born in the formal gdr it was the best time to watch them on tv. golden horns was my favorit. but also the sovjet version of the snow queen.
I've been fascinated with this kind of genre since I was a kid, especially, those made in the early days of cinema regardless of what country the fantasy movie came from. Thanks to your list, I'll go and watch these.
The 1956 Ilya Muromets is a fantastic fantasy film, complete with an awesome 3 headed dragon, and a giant that turns into a mountain.

I am looking forward to seeing these new recommendations, as I have only seen "Viy", and a couple of the other films that were mentioned in the comments.
I have seen many, many fantasy, sci-fi, and horror movies over many years. Even though my major influence has been with USA/Canada and British/UK films, I do have some small exposure to these folklore/fairy tale films of Slavic/USSR/Russian origin.
Some recommendations of great fantasy films/tv productions I have seen (beyond the Slavic titles already mentioned):
Queen of Spades (Pikova dama) - several productions have been filmed of this short story by Alexander Pushkin, and the definitive version is said to be the British production (1949).
Leptirica (TV movie; 1973; Alt-title: The She-Butterfly) is a great Yugoslavian film production. I enjoyed watching this fantasy/horror film.
The "Cannon Movie Tales" series, nine feature films based on classic fairy tales were produced for the Cannon Group in the mid '80s. All of the films featured well-known actors from the U.S. and U.K. and were shot on-location in Israel. I really enjoyed watching these:
Hansel and Gretel (1988)
Snow White (1987)
The Frog Prince (1986)
Shelley Duvall's "Faerie Tale Theater" (TV series; 1982-1987) had some amazingly well-done episodes. There are 27 episodes total, including "The Snow Queen", "The Pied Piper of Hamelin", etc.
Merlin (TV mini-series; 1998; 3 episodes) was the best and most comprehensive King Arthur story I have seen to date. Exquisite fantasy film!
More Than a Miracle (1967; Alt-title: C'era una volta) is a lesser known Italian/French version of Cinderella starring Sophia Loren. A memorable film.
P.S. - please consider making a separate video blog on Christmas-themed films worldwide. I especially love the Christmas films that center around fantasy themes (as opposed to just romance), mainly because they focus more on bringing the good -- the Light of miracles and magic to help when people are facing real challenges in their lives.
The Savage Hunt of King Stach is a really good one.
Another classic for me is "After Rain on Thursday" which is another amalgamation of characters and tropes.
I actually grew up on these Slavic cartoon/live action fairytale/fantasy movies. Though I'm not Slavic! My grandparents would always buy me the Soviet era movies, such as The Snow Queen, Vasilisa the Beautiful, Viy (I own both of the modern remakes), The Little Humpbacked Horse and the Russian version of The Little Mermaid from 1976 (?) and those were some of the most magical movies - I've ever seen
Not really Soviet, but Yugoslavian production. Čudotvorni Mač (The Magic Sword) is 1950 adaptation of the legend of Baš Čelik.... which is basically the same as Koschei The Deathless.

Soviet animation is worth checking out, disregard the agenda behind it and you'll have much more compelling story and morality than Disney.
Alternatively: embrace the ideology behind it, since it's opposite, imperialism, has brought our planet to the brink of extinction.
Soviet movies had no agenda. Once in a while, it was that the working class people were equal to the aristocrats. How evil. But we disregard the imperialist Disney propaganda and look at the art.

Просто вы не интересуетесь фильмами, а их не раскручивают рекламой. Из фентези, например, есть сериал "Территория" на основе коми-пермяцких легенд. Причем это именно фентези, в данном ролике всё-таки о сказках рассказывали.

If you're up to fantasy subgenres, like science or low fantasy, there's Soviet late 80es "Hard to be a god" and "Witches labyrinth", and Russian "Day/Night Watch", and "Dark World". Although they are pumping out fantasy recently, there were few past year I haven't seen yet.

Perfect films to watch before going on a mushroom trip.
Mystery Science Theater riffed on four "Russo-Finnish" films - The Day The Earth Froze; Sadko (translated into English as The Magic Voyage of Sinbad, but he's not Sinbad); Sword and the Dragon; and Father Frost (also dubbed as Jack Frost). And they were all probably the best made films of the entire series. The films are just so completely weird and out there that the guys said they HAD to do them. And not all of that is due to the English dubbing. When they adapt more European fantasies into a Russian form (like Father Frost), they just come out as completely oddball.
For instance, Father Frost also has an appearance by Baba Yaga, but the English translation refers to her as the "Hunchback Fairy" for some reason, which REALLY tickled Mike and the Bots. Can't understand why, however - it's not as if "Baba Yaga" is protected by copyright.
Still, these films are just a lot of fun, and I wish we had better copies of the original films in the States so I could watch them uncut.

By the way Russian Folklore movies!

You might be interested to track down a series of articles I wrote for a magazine called OUTRE in the later 1990's about 'Soviet-era Russian "FANTASTIKA"...although my writings/research spanned some 17 issues. (I think an older version of the promo reel for my projected documentary about this subject, RED FANTASIES, may still be find-able on YT (I still don't know who originally posted it....maybe from our old website?) We screened it at Lincoln Center for the launch of a series of Soviet-era Fantastika we put together with Seagull Productions, FROM THE TSARS TO THE STARS (my maybe overly playful, but fairly descriptive title).
Back in the 80's when I first started the research it was crazy difficult to even trace down titles, much less actually find a way to see these works! (Traveled to Russia several times to locate materials, do interviews etc...and screen films that were all but falling apart at Gosfilmofond archive....But now, here so many of these films are, right here on ye olde youtube!)

However, as the native Russian and Ukrainian speaker, I must add some (perhaps, totally insignificant) corrections.
The sound that is traditionally represented in English transliteration as kh is not k, by any possible means. This is voiceless English h - the trick here is that English h is produced deeper in the throat (English h is glottal fricative), while Russian h aka [x] is velar fricative and so produced closer to the entrance, so to say. In practice it means that in English especially when put between the two vowels (listen to how Tom Jones pronounces aha in the song Sex Bomb, for good example), h obtains a g-like sounding quality, gets voiced somehow. Done some digging. As stated in opening credits, movie went through restoration (rerecording of music and dialogues)in 1980.
Sadly, Stolyarov (protagonist actor) died in 1969, so another actor voiced his lines. Strangely, Millyar who returned for Kashchei part, didn't voice the little mushroom man.

Okay, so in that clip at 12:38 from Sadko, I _swear_ I've seen that dude before, but it was like.... from an MST3K episode? Maybe? So yeah, personally, my exposure to Soviet or Slavik fantasy has been pretty limited - and oftentimes, framed through the lens of MST3K (such as with, "The Sword and the Dragon" - which Wikipedia tells me is actually called "Ilya Muromets"). But when I have seen their films, I've found their brand of fantasy and fairy tales to be fascinating and often endearing despite, or because of, the low budget. This was a really cool topic to cover and I'll definitely be checking some more of these out throughout the month here on TH-cam... and I would love to see you tackle a list of _animated_ fantasy films from the region sometime as well, since you spoke of Disney so much in this video.
A few years ago, I knew _Frozen_ reworked the story of the Snow Queen *into oblivion* so I wanted to see if there were any faithful adaptations online and sure enough there was... and it's this Soviet animation from 1957. Though it appears TH-cam now has an English dub (for anyone interested: th-cam.com/video/cV1M1y595_U/w-d-xo.html), I saw the original one with subtitles here - th-cam.com/video/P8jN0oOvYi0/w-d-xo.html. It looks beautiful for a movie that old too, with some really oddly smooth animation, particularly on the Snow Queen herself. Now I'm curious as to see what else the Soviet Animation industry was up to back in the day.

One my favorite movies is I Am Dragon. It's not a soviet film but it is a Russian film. It's very good. It emphasizes the need for both masculinity and femininity. It displays why they are equally important.

I have a vague memory of watching a move or television series that was English dubbed I think. I was so young that I can't remember the title. It's about two sisters or two girls, one is called "wild" or something. She's a bit different than the other sister in some magic related way. And I remember there's a prince she's in love with, and he has to slay a dragon. I have tried to find the title of the show for the longest time, but I haven't had luck...

As a russian citizen grown on USSR made fairytale films i should say that none of those made after approximately 2000 worth to watch. Most of them are just parasitizing on Russian folklore classics! This "last bogatir" is just another tastless chewing gum which you will immediately spit after watching. Films made in USSR and early 90s Russia had a soul which all those modern "reboot" attempts does not!

The one MST3K did was good. Golden Horns though I think it was called something different at the time.

Most of the above are fairy tales, not fantasy. Gogol wrote his book "Evenings on a farm near Dikanka" in the genre of a mystical story.

None of this stuff has been part of the West's tradition so let's dismiss w/ the Disney bashing. To ridiculous charges of "most of these films didn't see any release in America" - what Russian films today see "release in America" - much less eighty years ago during the Studio System w/ the Studios released their titles to their own movie houses? What Chinese films saw "release in America"? What Japanese films, apart from a redubbed and edited "Gojira"? And on the flipside of your coin, what American films saw release in the USSR?
Off the top of my head, My Fair Lady, Cactus Flower, Three Days of the Condor, and Capricorn One were all shown in the USSR. There were others too, but I can't remember them. Not too bad for an evil, insulated empire.
@@dmitol1631 I was married to a former Soviet, her father was a colonel in their Air Force (which unlike ours was a function of their Army) and her grandfather a WWII hero (to them the Great Patriotic War - basically a war where we saved their asses with Lend-Lease because FDR was a fellow traveler w/ Soviet spies in State Dept). She never saw ANY American films. Hot water was rationed and only available 2 times a week in a major city (Riga) and at school when it was cold (which was most of the year) the staff would inspect the back of the kids' ankles to bust those who refused to take a cold bath and instead just wipe down before school (they would miss their ankle backs typically). They had one state toy store with two dolls to choose from. She didn't even know what a vegetable peeler was when I met her in the Nineties in NYC at work, they peeled w/ knives. Their home photos from the 1980s used the same black and white film stock as my grandparents' used in the 1950s. In their nightclubs in Moscow in the 1980s they were still using reel-to-reel when we had CDs. She told me the very worst roads in America were like the best roads in the former Soviet Union (and you needed papers to drive down many of them). Her uncle died at 34 from alcohol poisoning from their making illegal alcohol (Samogon) to get around Gorbachev's anti-alcohol policies because drunkeness was rampant everywhere. When the USSR fell apart these people, who had been a deep freeze for 100 years, didn't even know how to write a check.
So let's not romanticize the Evil Empire, the first nation in history to kill more of its own people than died in war.

They banned Western movies, books, even music. Very few things like WIZARD OF OZ and THE SOUND OF MUSIC made it through Soviet ministry of culture.
Only after Gorbachev's 1985 perestroika and glasnost and the rise of pirate videotapes did things open up.
Now it is the other way around. It is Hollywood who has put a ban on them for their barbarism in Ukraine and Putin who is saying it is their right to have Western movies.
