Here's a tip to any sailboater if at high tide the boat is still stuck use one of the haul-up lines going to another boat. The whole idea is to heel the boat over to lift the keel off the bottom. It is surprising how easy a large sailboat will heel over when you pull from the top of the mast. I pulled a 60 ft. sailboat out of a mud bank after the coastguard and a small salvage boat couldn't move it. They were pulling from the bow and couldn't move it. When they left I took my 12ft. skiff with a 9.8 mercury outboard over and asked the owner to hand me the haul up from the mainsail, I told him to put anything that will fall over inside to stow it as I was going to heel the boat over and pull him out sideways. Now things got funny at this point because I could hear things falling over inside, between the cursing and him scrambling to save things. I guess he didn't think I could move him. Well, I got a case of beer and 100 bucks in my pocket and a happy sailor that couldn't stop laughing he didn't think I could move him. I made a friend that day, I told him the beer was plenty but he insisted I take the money.
As the owner of a long keeled 35’ ketch, I learned how much I really appreciate my long keel. A 4.8 ft draft and a 20 kg Mantis anchor hopefully will keep me off the beach. Glad he was able to refloat. Great job!
Alie you did an amazing job editing this and telling your story! You guys are my new fav alongside Delos! Can’t wait to see you guys hopefully throw the lines and do this full time!
When poling out your Genoa, be mindful to not load up your lower shrouds too much...this can be achieved by raising the pole up the mast somewhat so that it will swing out without hitting the lowers...the lower the pole, the more the scope of the lowers is angled down/forward into the path of your pole. Another tip is to attach guy-lines from the end of your pole both forward and aft, so you can control exactly the horizontal plane of your pole. You've maybe already seen this or figured it out, but if not...now you know! Keep on keeping on ;)
..... laughing .... just absolutely love how everyone comes together and lends a hand or just cheers encouragement .... job well done, was elated when you got her turned and floating .... my family went camping every summer on Hornby at Heron Rocks, spent many a day at Tribune Bay .. parents would let the kids chauffeur them around on the Island, except for Thursday that is, that was the day the COP came to the Island. .... and this is just the start of your cruise, look forward to seeing how your adventure unfolds .... thx for sharing a peek into your lives ..... and as always .. never stp dreaming, just dream bigger ... have fun be safe, sae our oceans ....

I just watched your channel for the first time. What a great episode. I am hoping to own a sailboat one day and yearn to sail the planet. Currently landlocked in Alberta. I really liked how you guys all came together to help that beached sailboat. I hope to be the kind of sailors you two are. That was awesome how you coordinated everyone to get that boat free. You both are Rockstars. Maybe we will cross paths one day. I’m glad there are people like you two on the water. Sail on!!!!
And that's a good reason to have a full keel, or at least a fully encapsulated keel and a skeg hung rudder. I know it's not good to beach a boat without prior planning, but you just never know when something will go wrong. And yes, the boat will be slower, but that kind of piece of mind is worth it, IMO.

Good job! We just where there on our way up to Desolation. We just crossed the straight to Comox in the smoke! That was a new experience with an old radar! Note, old salts all swear to have a club foot stay sail. I too wanted to put mine on a furler, but the self tacking club foot might be better to keep.....dunno?
Found your channel a few days ago..Really enjoyed your showing the process of looking and purchasing a sailboat....One thing though, How come you didn’t do a boat Tour ?????.....Curious to see the layout...
Hey Tommy, glad you found us! We will for sure do a boat tour at some point, we just have lots of other content to catch up on from this summer to get out first but we are looking forward to filming the boat tour and sharing with everyone :)
You only want to go in there with a north wind. Year's ago in there and the wind changed had to leave at 2.30 in the morning and go around to deep bay. Very scary with just a chart and around 30 knts. of wind!
Lucky he had a full keel, lucky his rudder was protected as well. I didn't see but did he have chain on his anchor? So many questions!! Thank God for all the help and Delos too!
Well that's how Karma goes, she came back and saved you 2 when needed! But Please Ben stay well away from lines under tension, I'm sure after your own rescue and the issues with possible injury to rescuers you understand that now, it's not a nice injury i've seen one!
Ben and Allie, another great episode in the Puget Sound. Props to all the cruisers rallying together for a successful outcome. Heads up, your "sub bell" doesn't lets us get upload notifications...set to "child content". Thanks again for taking us around the northern sound. ⛵
Heya! Alie here! This is what I found on the “child content” “If somebody is subscribed to your channel when it is set as 'made for kids' then the notification bell will be permanently disabled to that person, even if you set the channel as 'not made for kids' again. In that situation new subscribers will be able to press the notification button but existing subscribers will not. The only solution to this is for that person to unsubscribe and then resubscribe, and the notification button should then be available again.” So it sounds like you’ve been a subscriber for a while!! That’s awesome!! If you unsubscribe then subscribe again then the bell should become available for you ☺️ thanks for the heads up on this matter!!
The guy should hoist some water bags up to keep the boat healed over when trying to move it back in the water. If it's done correctly, the water bags will stay in the water when you pull on the topping lift lines and lean the boat over to where you want.
I have a cutter rig with a hank on staysail like yourselves. I have thought about installing a roller furling, but what to do with the storm sail if needed???
I have beached a boat deliberately to scrub the bottom. The method is to run an anchor from the bow out into known deep water and make sure it is dug in. Run the rode around a winch and pull it up tight. Then proceed as you did. BTW, doesn't that boat have its own engine to help?
They did get their engine running once we spun him around. I’m not sure why it wasn’t running sooner, maybe trying to avoid running sandy water through the cooling system.

If your deck candy is hot enough, you will have no problem getting the whisker pole up!

if you are going to go to all the trouble of beaching your boat wouldn't you think you would scrape the bottom while you wait?
