Foothills Farm + SARE Feed Fermentation Study Findings presented by Scratch and Peck

- Does feeding your flock fermented feed increase chicken health and egg yield? Will fermentation result in economic gains...or losses? We invite you to join crop scientist Louisa Brouwer, organic farmer Matt Steinman and the Scratch and Peck team to answer these questions in this conclusion to a year-long study.
I'd like to see a study done similarly on the nutritional content of eggs laid by hens on fermented vs dry feed.
We pasture our hens. We have nesting boxes. The space under the nesting boxes is perfect for tubs full of colonies of Dubai Roaches. We pull one "egg tray" covered in roaches and shake it off once a week from each tub. The chickens look forward to the event like kids waiting on Christmas!!!!! We feed them fermented feed and we compost their manure with wood chips and hay. They love digging in the finished compost for bugs and fishing worms. They are all super healthy and "dignified" because they are not competing for good nutrition.
Sounds like an excelent source for eggs. Where are you located and where do you market your eggs. Hope to see many more of these operations. Eggs are one of my sources of protein as do not eat mammals, so quality is big with me and paying top price for my eggs. They actually seems fresher perhaps because people have to pay the greater price if they reallly want eggs. Eggs alway a bargain and still will be for me.
I'd like to see the study continued through the lifespan of a group to compare overall laying time and health benefits. This was very interesting and I will use this information in my poultry class.
Fermented feed is good for all who eat; animals and humans!!!

Eastern WA you must be experiencing a lot of cold at end of January, '23. How do you keep the chickens from freezing temps?
Hope to see this catch on and most all eggs available are finally prducted humanely. Factory chicken for eggs and food has been so pathetic, glad to see chickens happy living life as they were intended, to provide us food while they enjoy life.
Seems the fermented feed expensive. How is it fermented? Have learned that fermented food good for humans digestion as well.

I am late to the conversation, but I soak my whole wheat in 5 gallon buckets, and feed about 20 bird's. I let the feed soak about 10 days or so without noticing any sour smell and the girls eat it right up every day

Love this!! What about their health? Did you see any changes in Appearance? I have started my horses on Fermented grain. I started slowly, and am up to 1 and a quarter pounds. I noticed softer tails, and they seemed calmer. I have a feeling the friendly bacteria helps with stomach and digestive issues that grains can cause. Happy stomachs, happy horses?? I will be continuing at the same rate for a month before I will know for sure. They definitely like it. Great study. Maybe the chickens fought less because they are more satisfied. Grains are hard on the stomach, at least with horses. Thank you for sharing.

@@ScratchAndPeckFeeds We too are doing it for our chickens, but I know much more about Horse Nutrition. I have my degree in Agriculture Science, but have focused my studying over the decades to horse rations. Specifically the vitamins and minerals. They say fermentation creates B vitamins, and that is what happens with my horses when I have supplemented them with B-complex, and vitamin A. Super shiny, and soft. So this all is really interesting to me. Thank you!!

So I’m trying this with my 5 urban backyard hens. For now, we live in Pittsburgh, but we have 4 acres of rainforest in Hawaii close to volcanoes national park. Our property is in a subdivision zoned for agricultural work. It is there where we plan on expanding our food production efforts into making a positive impact on that area. Not sure where our journey will lead, but looking into everything from poultry, goats, mini milk cows and or steer, pigs…even short term vacation rental possibly. Looking into everything from Korean Natural Farming to Joel Salatin to Greg Judy….I thank you for sharing your results🍄🌈😃🤙

Hoping to get some clarification on the feed/water ratio. @4:50 the narration says to mix 1:2 ratio of feed:water (by weight) but the study document says:
"Fermented feed, soaked in water at a ratio of 3.2 parts feed to 4 parts water for 48 h prior to feeding;"
The document does not clarify by weight or volume.

my question is about protein. I'll use milk as an example. Dehydrated milk powder contains some where around 22% protein. But, when you add water to turn it into liquid, milk, then the protein drops to around 6%. I mix my own feed and use a protein additive to attain a 20% protein feed. It seems to me that if you take a 20% dry feed and mix it with water then the same thing is going to happen as with the powered milk. The protein level is going to tank way below 20%. If so can I forget the protein additive, which is a pretty big chunk of my feed bill. Then what do you use for the protein that the chickens need? Any input would be appreciated.
At 10:40 in the video, egg quality was referred to as being higher. The WSARE study was not inclusive of egg quality testing parameters. What was this conclusion based upon?
Wow super informative. So pls help me out. I tried fermented feed on my 300 layers and they loved it but now I have to cut cost and measure the feed too. So pls my birds are 10 weeks old and consuming 20kg, how much fermented feed do I have to feed them
Even if a person doesn't want to do the whole fermentation process. In winter months they'd probably love a warm mash
I would be interested if someone studied the difference in colder climates and winter where typically egg production drops.

Is it possible to ferment raw pulverized whole fish? Would it become putrid and unsafe? And also is it possible to ferment the feed ingredients individually (alakat) instead of mixed rations? Thank you so much.

If I fermenting commercial crumble/pellet feed, is same growth and weight gain we can see in the fermented feed as compared with raw commercial feeds?? Pls explain I have duck farm feeding nearly 500+ birds your answer really help me. We are doing as commercial so weight gain part is very important for us is it does weight gain fermented commercial feeds.

if the fermentation process is producing probiotics and prebiotic's there is a good chance it's the gut bacteria of your chickens that's increasing their ability to get more nutrition from their food more so....Yes bacteria and yeasts break down complex proteins sugars starches and allergens but is a three day process enough to make that a substantial gain? I'm not the authority on the subject but it would be nice to know conclusively what the case is as there is an awful lot of conflicting information on the subject.....

Hi...Have 2 questions....1). Do u clean the feed baskets at the end of the day so that the leftover feed won't decay.....If it the case what will be the daily feed loss. How do u overcome this leftover feed challenge?
2). Can we ferment the feed if we use dry fish powder as a feed ingredient?
I ferment my feed using Scratch and Peck and there is almost 0 loss in feed, my chickens clean it all up and since the fines get absorb by the water it becomes a mash which they eat
I do not clean mine out. The leftover feed acts as a starter for the next fermented batch.

Strange audio.
At about 1:10 and 10:20 the audio seems to switch to stereo but with one track of the stereo slightly out of phase with the other. It's still comprehensible, but it sounds strange.
maybe special effects folks could use something like this to annoy, I mean, to simulate someone speaking under water or for how some alien might speak.

While we have used a rule of thumb calculation that a laying hen will eat 1/3 of a pound of grain a day, after fermenting it you are able to cut down to 1/4 of a pound since the birds become full faster and are able to utilize the grain more efficiently! Trying to understand how you can say that you get more eggs from the firmament feed that dry when a chickens cycle is one egg every 27 to 30 hours,what about wasted feed the left over fermented feed in the troughs sitting on in the heat will go bad.

Our feed is a complete diet, which means it contains all the vitamins and minerals your hens need!
That would mean that it is okay to add vitamins before fermentation. You should have extra water and should feed that water to your birds to be sure they're getting all the vitamins you've added.
