De gevels waren niet altijd wit in Thorn. In de 18e eeuw voerden de Fransen een belasting in op basis van de grootte van de ramen. Deze was niet makkelijk te betalen voor de bewoners en zo werden de ramen vaak dichtgemetseld. Om deze littekens van armoede te maskeren werden de huizen dan ook wit gekalkt (bron: Wikipedia).
