They do that to prevent the bends; and to dive well beneath the surface. Unlike us, seals are conscious breathers. They take breaths voluntarily. She's so pretty thanks for sharing. :)
38 breaths (counting the first one we partly saw) over 2:08. Possibly, or it could be looking for another breathing hole without a strange ape creature and it's odd metal box to haul out at.
I heard that she once conducted special breathing workshops in the Indian ashram where the Beatles once stayed. They had to keep the room very cold and provided her with a special tank
How many breaths did the seal take? He has already breathed some when the video starts. I just wonder how many breaths it does take for the seal to feel ready.
Great creature... But why do you film this wild animal at antarctica sitting beside HIS hole, putting a (pardon) dumb artificial penguin beside it??? As far as I understand, this seals come to their hole mostly after an exhausting hunt, because the produced body heat melts the ice and helps them keeping the hole free. This animal most probably had no choice but breathing in your frightening company. Pleas don't degrade creation; just try to understand. Greetings from a (sustained) swiss hunter.
Actually this is a Weddell seal, they live deep under the pack ice so they have no natural predators in the breeding colonies. So they are very tolerant of people and seem to have very little to no fear of people. Look up “Weddell Seal science montana state university”, they have a channel with a ton of information about weddell seals if you want to know more.
And actually these seals don’t really make these holes, they just enlarge the holes already in the ice caused by tide cracks. They use their teeth not their body heat. The seals you’re talking about are seals in the Arctic, these Weddell seals live in Antartica. Wrong side of the planet. Seals in the Arctic have much more predators and therefore tend to be much more skittish and easily frightened. Besides, the only people who are ever anywhere close to Weddell seals are going to be researchers studying them, so obviously this researcher wouldn’t be filming this close if it was distressing to the animal. They’re literally only in Antarctica to study these seals, they’ve been studying weddell seals there for 50 years so all of these seals have seen humans many times throughout their lives. Basically since they were just born, because all newborn pups in the breeding colonies are weighed and tagged at birth.

Even when they’re asleep?
"Do not unplug sea doggo while recharging"
No wonder the Antarctic winds are up to 200 mph! It's simply all the sea doggos breathing! I just love me some sea doggos!
The reason they take so many breaths is to get nitrogen out of their lungs to let more oxygen in, in case you’re wondering.
Not just lungs but out of their blood too
