Thank you for the great content. I stumbled across your channel and have been binge watching. I started writing songs probably 20 years ago (in punk bands) and since then I've experienced quite a few lulls with time and motivation. So much so that there are periods of years between songs. Over the past year I've been bitten with the writing bug (not necessarily inspiration but definitely the motivation and desire). Watching you break down the process is so awesome. I've learned to pinpoint things that don't serve the song and even found some validation/revelation of some good instinctual habits. The challenges are motivation fuel. Thanks again for all you're doing for the art of songwriting and for dumping gasoline(petrol for you?) on the fire.
I've done this challenge too! I'm always so struck by how it forces my brain to just make decisions without judgments, and sometimes really interesting things happen. This sounded great, and I can't wait to hear the next challenge!
That was fun to watch, and instructive too. Key takeaway for me: the more we put into songwriting, the easier it gets. I do not think I could skim through my song ideas list and find a hook so easily, so that’s an area where I should do more prep work. Also, I tend to take for-e-ver thinking up lyrics, so it was helpful to see a seasoned songwriter do this successfully in so little time. And another helpful reminder: do the lyric & melody brainstorming with instrument in hand (I often don’t do that). Great video. Thank you!!
❤❤❤ You are amazing !!! I'm french and sometimes, your words go faster than my brain ( maybe a title 😀 ) but it's cool. Thanks for all your job, so inspiring !
This channel has def gone in my back pocket and various categories of music self-schooling playlists for when I get to lyrics (never got to go to Berkeley or GIT so I'm doing it via youtube). I'm doing something similarly vexxing, the goal is getting from a morning improvisation on guitar, keys, or drums to a completed, recorded, released composition that night. My best is 3 days so far but maybe yesterday's will be finished today. It's totally a focus issue stopping it up, but I know it's very possible even with the bigger types of prog-rock pieces I'm into.
Thank you for this, and your transparency about not nailing it. The song is wonderful though and that second verse came out great with the extra 20 minutes. So sorry to hear about your pup!
Well done for showing us that even skilled writers struggle with the quick first draft challenge. sometimes even an hour fails. But the challenge is great.
So i saw this come on my feed and before i watched it, decided to put my phone down, pick up my guitar and do the same thing! Barely made it and obviously some of the lines are a little cringe, but super happy with the general idea of it!!! Now im here to watch❤️❤️ thanks for the inspiration!
Fantastic, thank you! Excellent way to GET GOING, GET CREATING - and FINISH! And what a fab starting idea, and then development ❤ Great great song. You're a wonderful generous inspiring songwriter, musician & teacher. Thank you so much 🎸🌈👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Very cool. As always Keppie. What about a video on writing a "short song", that is under 2 minutes. As you probably know, this a trend - or rather a style that has returned. (The first Beatles LP Please, Please Me from 1963 has 3 songs under 2 minutes.) There are a number of songwriters that are currently on Spotify having great success with songs for a "distracted, Tik Tok, deliver your song quickly, I have a short attention span" world.
Awesome song! Any chance when you do these you could hreak down what chords you are using? I think I get most of them zooming in, but between different fingerings being used from mine, and blurry quality, I don’t always get it.
Great, thank you! Could you please make more videos of the songwriting process and describing creative solutions during it? This makes learning from your example very easy 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
"...you're the only plan I C." I was hearing that at the end of the first verse, but that's just because of the nice word picture you 'd drawn. 😅 I loved this - thanks for the awesome vid!
I don't really time myself when making songs, it just has to be fast because I have other things to do, but I usually finish at 20 minutes average. 20-40 minutes is my range because if it took me more than that it feels like dragging already and I'm already overthinking. If the idea is not going anywhere or at least anything that satisfies me I abandon it right away, on to the next idea. The goal is to finish anything at all; whether it is a good song or not is secondary. And I write (or try to) everyday, or if I can't one day, I'd write two songs the day after. It's become almost like exercise. And whatever is finished, I almost treat it as 'draft', and the lyrics are not always the final version of it and can be improved once I come back to it and deem it worthy of attention.
Is it possible? Yes, it just depends on the song 🎶 some write themselves in 15, some fake 10 years like Hallelujah. I’m with you in that a draft can usually come by the end of an hour. Love that hook!!!
I am a firm believer that good writing is rewriting. I am a novice lyricist who uses channels like this to learn my craft. Also I am not a musician so coming up with great vocal melodies is not easy for me. I rely on the talent of other musicians and, more recently, ai muic generators to assist me on the music front. That said, I can say writing great lyrics is messy business -- it demands constant improving, fighting writers block and collaboration. Here is a song I am working on that looks nothing like the first draft which is embarrasing .... But through collaboration and constant rewriting, I feel as though I have something that works quite well -- Working with a female vocalist and music arranger to assist me with vocal melody, harmonies and instruments... Here is what I have so far ... th-cam.com/video/YN5wFl0GMio/w-d-xo.html
Because it can be difficult to FINISH songs. So this more than anything forces you to finish a song. Will always need to do rewrites but at least have a song structure down etc. I’d give myself an hour though.
To say that was written in thirty minutes, sound like a hit to me and resonates a lot.
You are a great teacher. I'm sorry for your loss.
I am so completely BLOWN AWAY at the talent and beauty of the lyrics in this song. Thank you for continuing to inspire me
Fun to watch. Tried it. Ready in unter 2 minutes. Played your song. You're a hit machine!

This is an amazing video. You are amazing as well!!! Thank you for sharing this kind of content and light with us aspiring songwriters.
You’re amazing, Keppie! So inspiring and motivating as always!🥰
I’m so sorry for the loss of your furbaby. ❤️🩹
I must say that the melody didn't grab me as anything special. BUT, the rhythm & the chords you used REALLY elevated it !!
Very catchy. I dig it.
Loved this! Thanks 🤩

Fun and wonderful, as always. Best tip - your idea files!

Great idea!
LOVE THIS ~ The first verse started with the alphabet , maybe the second could have done something with numbers.
Good job Keppie ! Love your stuff. Now can I translate that into something sweet?
Go ahead!
You are awesome, gotta give you the fire emojis with a heart inside🔥❤️🔥

I always try to limit any writing session on a song to 30 minutes. I will park it and move on to something else. Works for me.
That's better than 99.9% of today's pop.
Nice song, the chorus melody reminds me of Bad by Michael Jackson.
wowwwww its great
No Keppie!! I wasn't prepared for the lost of your furry friend Coby!
I’m so slow writing lyrics and melodies. Chords too lol. Recording too, oh and I’m slow at mixing as well.
You are the Trees, Louise.
If i dont write a song in 10 min it goes in the bin, also what songs have you wrote ?
Find it hard to come up with catchy melody

It takes Randy Newman months to write a song and you can tell
Nice song, sorry about your dog.
No
I’m sorry you lost your sweet boy.. nobody can compare to the love of a dog..
Other than those with concrete deadlines, I have no idea why TH-cam is obsessed with writing songs quickly. It’s weird.

I think you missed the whole point.
you watched less than 20 seconds into the video, huh? it took you longer to write that comment lol.
cool song in the end
