Thanks for this Ed. So many towns and cities in North America have taken their names from Scottish towns, as well as towns from other countries. I live about an hour drive from another Kirkcaldy, which sadly is now near ghost town status. Cheers.

The problem is there are many coffee shops in the shops just behind the prom. Every year the whole thing floods sometimes covering the road and seeping into the buildings along the waterfront.
We have a boardwalk similar here in Rimouski and much much less history than Kirkcaldy. Like you said here too it's separated by a dual carriage way and shops are non existent when you walk along it. You can check it out on street map to give you a general idea of what it"s like over here. Thx for another great glimpse of the Fife path.
I lived in Kirkcaldy for a few years, and you're completely right about the Prom being a bit miserable, but you should see the battering it takes in bad weather! I always saw it more as a barrier than an attraction. There used to be lots of little shops where it wasn't as exposed but it's a B&Q or something now.
When they built the Morrisons down the end of the prom, which way did they point it's cafe? ... the car park. Why would anyone want to look out over the water??
Looks like a highly interesting area I look forward to visiting some day. Does anyone know if there is (or was) any heavy industry located on the tidal waterfront?
Good question. Someone local to the area may be more able to answer than me. If you go to the National Library of Scotland's website, their map section will show you the area from the late Victorian period onwards (maps.nls.uk/view/82881924), and as you may see there are many industries, like maltings, floor cloth works and Flax Mill along the waterfront. I'm just not sure if these may be classed as heavy industry.
If there was the money and industry that it once had it would be great Idea,to have the prom have these things,but that has all been taken away pits closed,textiles gone,fishing gone,and all the other stuff that once made our town decent taken out of it our picture houses,and as for pubs we have enough to do,and we don't have the folk who have money any more to exploit and spend in them areas any more
Kirkcaldy's an industrial town, not a seaside resort. Well it used to be more industrial than it is now. I can't see it as a resort in competition with the likes of the East Neuk villages only a handful of miles to the East. Plus the coastal resorts of Burntisland and Aberdour - such as they are. In my mind it's still the centre of linoleum production in Scotland, with the smell of linseed oil reeking right through the whole town. All that's gone now but auld ideas don't shift so easily...
I just feel that with the loss of so much industry, and the main focus for many Scottish places now on tourism, the promenade has a lot of potential for cafes and bars and restaurants, all with great views over the water.
Yes, Kirkcaldy has a Perfect location on Forth Near big tourist Cities Like Edinburgh, Dunfermline and Dundee. It seems like it's always missing something, Something Big

If you count the 2 coal mines then yes. Seafield and dysart.

the prom is home to Europe's largest traveling street fair [ the links market ] there is no room for tacky hotdog stalls and rock shops

kirkcaldy needs a tourist attraction like Blackpool has it's tower and Falkirk has it's wheel/kelpies....
