  • Explore the practice of zazen (sitting meditation) and Soto Zen Buddhism with Abbot Shohaku Okumra and hear why just sitting, facing a wall, transforms the lives of those who dare to do nothing. Watch this new interview next: • Beginning the Journey:...
    Abbot Shohaku Okumra was interviewed by Interior Mythos Journeys in April, 2017 at the Sanshin Zen Community: www.sanshinji.org/ Please Subscribe to Interior Mythos Journeys: th-cam.com/users/Interiormyt...

    Our Mission: The curriculum of Interior Mythos Journeys is a quest to explore contemporary mythic language that is in harmony with the 21st Century, Global, Quantum Scientific, and Universal Reality in which we all actually live. Learn more at interiormythos.com/
    As we solitarily and collectively claim the force of a relevant contemporary mythos, we are delivered to the possibility of life-lived-in-depth, the possibility of authentic life. This is the path beneath the surface.
    The Transformative Encounter: The Practice of Contemplation
    In the current age this transformative encounter, as well as the practices that deliver us to this encounter and the personal connection that flows from this encounter, is seldom the focus of our lives. Many of us wander disoriented through life, often on a self-destructive path, in a world seen, understood, and measured primarily by the external environment. We are disconnected from the Connecting Myth. We are disconnected from the interior depth to which the Connecting Myth might deliver us. Ironically, we have come to understand myth as a lie rather than a symbolic and metaphoric gateway to a deeper truth.

The “Life Journey” series uses material from some of the greatest teachers living today who are mostly unknown to the popular culture. These sequential cinematic art form modules guide one deeper and deeper into consciousness and the practices of a contemporary contemplative. @Stephen Hughes all those things that make physical existence easy and comfortable do not come without a price. Comfort is great because it frees us up from the struggle of survival so we can pursue philosophy art and deepen our understanding of ourselves but I think comfort is being pursued much for its own sake slot and that distracts from what is truly important.

      Mountain Oneness, Yes…Zazen is life transforming. In fact, anytime we find a path allowing us to practice the truth, “We are part of it,” transformation happens. When we become One with the Mountains, life changes; when the In-finite is revealed in the finite, when the Whole is exposed in the particular, when a glimpse of Timelessness is transparent through time, these are the igniting encounters that change life. Thank you.

    The meaning of life is, to give life meaning. If this is what one wants.
    To ask questions, one will have to go on a search for an answer. But if one does not ask questions, one does not have to go and find answers. .... If the wind does not blow, the bell won`t ring and if I am deaf, I can`t hear a sound. .....
    Without our senses we cannot experience anything here on this 3d level.
    Just do what you love and what feels good.
    When I just go and sit down and think of nothing, make myself go into a space of awareness, without any questions or expectations, I usually get downloads from source. I will have ideas come to me and then I will have to get up immediately and start creating those ideas. Usually the end result is very satisfying and it makes me feel very good. Feeling good is what one could call a "meaningful" goal to have. Blessings from Germany.

    This kind of practice seems pure and authentic and coincides with my personal intuition. Traditionally I've been sitting and counting my breaths, but in reality this is attaching to the breath, which can not only seem to escape the coming and going of thought, but masks or overlays the observation of the natural flow, which can be distracting.

    • @Interiormythos
      @Interiormythos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Anton, Beautiful reflections. Thank you! We also find it helpful to remember the objective of all our interior practices is not necessarily to count or not count the breaths, or anything else. The objective of the solitary practitioner is finally to manage consciousness, not simply when one is sitting, but in all of the encounters and situations of one’s life. Thus, sometimes it is appropriate to count the breaths, if it is helpful, and…sometimes it is appropriate to not count the breaths, if it is helpful. And sometimes it is appropriate to abandon our attachment to all our special practices and simply surrender to the flow of life that bears no self-consciousness of any human-devised method because it enters the depth of consciousness Itself. I’ve always been searching for the meaning of my existence and my life. Still

    • @Interiormythos
      @Interiormythos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nhung, Yes…this search for meaning is a lifelong, day by day, pursuit. And…as with everything that is true, the answer is always hidden in paradox. In this case, we discover the meaning of life by not looking for it! This statement is, of course, not true!…but true. DH Lawrence penned the following poem: Those who go searching for love… Only make manifest their own lovelessness… And, the loveless never find love…Only the loving find love…And, they never have to seek for it! If one substitutes the word “meaning” for “love,” one gets a feel after the message. Étienne Madore, you are absolutely correct about the “masterpiece” that this module and many others on this channel represent. And, we understand the violation we all experience with the commercialization required to present such material. We resisted releasing the creations of “Interior Mythos Journeys” to TH-cam for many years however, 7 months ago we relented and began putting material here because this is where the people are! Thus, we can now share this important message.
      We are grateful you discovered this channel. We hope you will return often and share your comments freely. There are many videos on this channel. The core teaching is presented in the “Life Journeys” series (check out the Playlists: 49 short videos in this series have been released to date). The “Life Journey” series uses material from some of the greatest living teachers who are mostly unknown to the popular culture; including Abbot Shohaku Okumura, Sister Joan Chittister, and many others from the East and the West. These sequential cinematic art form modules guide one deeper and deeper into consciousness and the practices of a contemporary contemplative. To advance in becoming a contemplative practitioner, we suggest encountering one sequential module per day or some other regular schedule that works for you. The journey begins with “The Presence.” th-cam.com/video/gekfR1jrsko/w-d-xo.html. This sequential contemporary contemplative practitioner journey is an excellent opportunity for solitary inquiry or shared group discussion. We know of no stronger existing guided material to nurture a deep journey in today’s world; for a beginning seeker or a master. The top Comment listed under each module contains a context for the specific video on screen and a link for the next sequential art form. We hope to see more comments and reflections from you again soon. We will always attempt to respond.

      If you wish to adopt a regular practice of exploring a deep personal journey within this 21st Century global village we share, consider the sequential steps of the “Life Journeys” series you can discover in the Playlists on this channel. We know of no more important practice for humanity today than re-connecting with the universal Deep Place and allowing this connection to modulate our thinking and action. This material can nurture the beginning seeker or the well-practiced master. Our world needs contemporary contemplative practitioners.

      Sugamelt Pastries & Coffee. Thank you for this sincere affirmation. This channel presents both short video snipits, longer interviews, and more refined, integrated, and sequenced, cinematic art forms called “life journeys.” If you are connected with a group, consider elements from the Life Journeys series. These are designed for group discussion. Here are two popular examples: The Practice of Deep Listening th-cam.com/video/P4nQ-SGi1Kw/w-d-xo.html and The Practice of Deep Breathing th-cam.com/video/xYO_L_d99aY/w-d-xo.html .

      One nurturing exercise you may wish to consider is establishing a practice of going through the “Life Journey” series in sequence, one-at-a-time, on some regular schedule (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.). Many people are finding this helpful solitarily or to share with a friend or group discussion. The series uses material from some of the greatest living teachers who are mostly unknown to the popular culture; including Abbot Shohaku Okumura, Sister Joan Chittister, Kaira Jewel Lingo, Adam Bucko, and many others: East and West. All background music is provided by the cellist who opened for the Dalai Lama prior to his many on-site teachings all over the world.
      If you post a Comment at the end of a segment, others can be helped by your reflection.
      The journey begins with an awareness of “The Presence.” th-cam.com/video/gekfR1jrsko/w-d-xo.html. A sequential journey ensues.

    With simplicity Abbot Shohaku Okumra communicates what is most profound - the paradox of reality and how to live with it. Modern Western Philosophy was paraphrased by Noam Chomsky as "Obtain wealth; think of none other than self." How far removed it is from Zen. J.J. Krishnamurti said that it is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society. We don't pay attention to the messages we are getting even in the face of all the pollution we are creating - and we know since the sixties that our way of life is unsustainable. Think of social media as a way to create more "mind," more distraction and addictive behaviours. There is a better way as clearly explicated here by Abbot Shohaku. Many thanks for this beautifully put-together video.

    So grateful to have stumbled upon this. I'm relatively new to Zen Buddhism and find the practice to be the very thing that I've been missing in my life. I just so happen to be reading The Art of Just Sitting and really enjoyed Okumura's essay in that. Well worth investing some time to watch in its entirety.

    I had a strange experience where I suddenly became aware that I'm "not here." There's a body, but there's nothing "inside" my head--it's just mirrors, an organism, feelings, and thoughts. I realized that the thoughts aren't "mine" they are just thoughts. Becoming aware that if "I" was not what I thought but realizing there WAS still the experience of awareness changed how I see things.
    My mind now wants to get "back" to this understanding and I am constantly tense. I keep seeking knowledge but a part of me things that maybe it's time to focus more on silence and meditation. Too much thinking.
