In this episode, Back for round 3, we have Cooper! This time Jake and Coop take a deep dive into the technology side of things. They discuss how tattoo equipment and gear has been changing over time and what the tattoo community could do to make some serious positive change.
Cooper also talks more directly about cartridges, tattoo machines and different ideas about potential improvements. A ton of great little nuggets and ideas, this is definitely not one to be missed.

Coop's notes on cartridge configurations by manufacturer:
Bishop/DaVinci does not show needle configuration on website but a sales person at their store told me the shaders did not have center needles
Kwadron website does not show configurations
Prime website does not show configurations
Tat Soul/Envy does show configurations in website and can confirm that the medium taper round shaders do in fact have center needles in their configurations and are straight tapered and not tight tapered at the top. This makes sense to me as I have had the best one pass lines with the needles (18rs textured) I have tried from them in particular.

First of all thank you for your podcast. I’ve been following you since I first started thinking about changing careers and become a tattoo artist. I’m finally taking the leap and apprenticing and since I first picked a coil, when they are not too heavy I really appreciate the balance of it, and really miss that with a pen machine. There is a guy in england that I can’t quite remember his name that is actually trying to adress that with the motor being on the side of a pen and create a rotary bar machine but with a pen format (kind of a baby between a kubin and a pen).
I also struggle with the length of cartridges versus tubes with traditional needle bars where you can lower your grip to get the machine to stay vertical as I have really small hands.

One of THEE MOST IMPORTANT videos i have ever seen from your channel. Thank you. The Engineering issues must be addressed for another evolution of the craft to come... this presents the true issues with stark clarity. Now wondering is A.I. can assist in engineering & designing a better system of linkage or method of tension and weight distribution... as well as a next step in cartridge design.

Great content as always!!! Thomas Colon’s comments are on point!!! The more we as artists can understand and discover the engineering side of tattoo machines and the geometry, stroke length, needle inertia, cycles per second the more it will help our needs as tattooers.

There’s so much good info in this video, makes sense with the medium taper, used long taper for years and switch to medium and it was night and day difference

This man cooper, I hadn’t seen him before. omg his brain is like my brain. It’s in incredible to see another person who shares the same thought structure as me! When I am passionate or curious about something I have to know everything about it, why it is the way it is and how it came to be! Thank you for posting this 🫶🏻
