    I enjoy your videos! A short, to the point, no nonsense approach. I like lip buzzing for two reasons, one, as an isometric exercise, and two, to refocus my embouchure when things start to "get away" from the most efficient position for me. Keep 'em coming!
    Thanks again!

    • @TheBlackTrumpeter
      @TheBlackTrumpeter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Jeff! When you lip buzz to bring things back into focus what's your approach?

    • @JeffLewisTrumpet
      @JeffLewisTrumpet 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I "free" buzz (like you demonstrated in the video), place the mouthpiece as I'm buzzing, then relax my lips to open the sound. I assume this is close to optimal for me and then go from there.

    I’m unsure on whether you have to apply the pitch as if you were humming or if that high pitched buzzing note comes from just blowing normally with the correct embouchure. My lips are vibrating however they don’t have any kind of pitch, is that a problem? (I might be super late to this video but I noticed you were kindly helping everyone in the comments so I thought I’d give it a shot!)

    Good tutorial as always Aaron. Free lip buzzing, perhaps second only to mouthpiece buzzing, appear the most controversial topic in brass playing among teachers and students. Certainly it is up to the individual to determine if buzzing the lips is a help or hindrance in their playing performance and maintenance. Do you have any suggestions about how much time (percentage wise) in daily practice routines should be devoted to free lip buzzing? Some pro players buzz frequently when driving the car etc as a way of maintaining embouchure strength. Others are absolutely opposed to any free lip buzzing and say it creates too much tension and stiffness in the lips. Be keen to hear your thoughts on how much, how often etc.

    Thanks for the info, it really think it is going to help. I stopped playing for a year and lost almost everything I knew about playing on trumpet and now whenever I try too hard to play or try to hit anything above a C5 I just end up blowing air through the mouthpiece instead of buzzing I don't know how it started, and I just can't find a way to fix, it I really hope these tips will help.
    EDIT: Thank you so much! These tips really really helped, I'm back to playing how I used to a year ago! I can explain just how useful they were! Thanks a million!

    I mean, this was like three years ago so hopefully, you'll be able to respond - but I've been playing the trumpet for a while now and I can still buzz without a mouthpiece. The only thing bothering me is that I'm a bit shaky when I buzz. I have braces so I don't know if that hinders anything, but I feel like my lips aren't strong enough to stabilize the air going out and it just kind of 'shotgun's out lol. When this happens, all I do is try to tighten my lips together, but it prevents me from being able to hit low notes AND high notes so my range is limited. Every time I try to hit high notes then transition into a low note, the melody just cracks into another note. Not to mention, I need to water my lips every time I try to buzz. I don't know if it's just my lips or the shape of my aperture, but I honestly don't know what to do. I'll try to play around with lip positioning. I also forgot to mention that every time I play, pockets of air slowly expand in front of my mouth so it makes it harder to buzz.

    There's so much air when I'm playing! I have watched so many videos and I've tried everything I can't figure out why when I play low notes it sounds out of turn and airy and when I play high its buzzy and airy and just god awful. I've always been complemented for my tone but suddenly this year I've started having horrible tone and it makes no sense do you have any tips to help I dont know if it's my instrument. It's probably not its just so frustrating@

    • @TheBlackTrumpeter
      @TheBlackTrumpeter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your low notes are airy and out of tune then your aperture (the hole in the middle of your lips to let air pass through) is too big.
      If your high notes are buzzy and airy, then your aperture is too big as well and you’re not blowing fast enough….don’t mistake speed for quantity of air. You don’t need a lot of air to play higher notes.

    Hi, I've got the problem that my lower lip is tucking and kind of getting into mouth, so the "m" disapears. I'm fighting with it but it seems quite impossible. The lower lip is going back gradually when I'm going higher and it completely tuck on the high C. What should I do? Is it possible to train it out?
    (sorry for my English)

    How do you free buzz on a high pitch like the one in the video? I used to play trombone and can buzz the pitch an octaver lower but no where near your pitch. Does it just come with practice and heightening your range?

      I do with fast airstream and high tongue arch...."ee" like Pizza. But yes it does come with experimenting and practice. Hope this quick tip helps.

    Hey, I’ve been playing trumpet for 3 years. I learned on my own, and eventually I just stopped playing, but I want to learn it and be good at it. I do everything you say to form the embouchure and then blow, but my air is really uncontrolled and it’s all over the place, I don’t think it’s too tight or too lose, what should I do? Thanks so much in advance

      This is exactly what has happened to me, i play Baritone and was good at it, then i took a year break and came back and when i buzz i cant get a steady or long buzz.

    • @TheBlackTrumpeter
      @TheBlackTrumpeter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s difficult to say what the true issue is without hearing you play, but based on the “air is really uncontrolled” statement…you might need to incorporate breathing exercises into your routine. Inhale for 4 beats then Exhale for 8 beats. In for 4, out for 12 or 16…all at 60 BPM. This will helped you learn how to blow a steady stream of air. Lastly, focus on making sure that the air only flows out of the middle of the lips (aperture) and there are no air leaks from the sides or corners of the embouchure. Hope this helps.

      Work on producing a steady airstream away from the instrument using breathing exercises. Check out the advice I gave Joseph as a reply in this thread.

    • @TheBlackTrumpeter
      @TheBlackTrumpeter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Maia Wimm to get to a higher pitch we have to position our tongue higher in the mouth by saying "ee" like pizza.
      Think of "ah" as the neutral tongue position to get notes in the middle of the staff.
      You can change the pitch from mid to high by changing going taahhh-eeeee and blowing faster air like you're blowing out birthday candles.
      You may also be too tight in the middle of the lips which will prevent air to pass through.
      All in all...I would have to see what's wrong so I can help you further. Don't give up though.
      DM me a video of you buzzing on FB, Insta, or Snap and I'll give you some feedback.

    So do you slightly roll your lips in? Does that make sense? Just felt my lips do that and it seems easier. But don't know if that's proper technique and I don't wanna run into troubles later. Cheers mate

    • @TheBlackTrumpeter
      @TheBlackTrumpeter  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ryan McGill yeah that makes sense! I have to slightly roll my bottom lip in because how full it is. If I don't then I end up playing in the red. I would also have too much lip in the mouthpiece where I wouldn't be able to get enough air to pass through. But some people don't have to roll in their lips because they're thinner. It depends on the person. Hope this helps 🙂👍🏾

    All I can ever get out is a weak buzz or just air. I have been playing for almost 3 years. Some days I can play up to a B flat above the staff, but a lot of the time I can’t even play an F on the top of the staff. My private lessons teacher tells me to just keep doing lip slurs, but I have tried and tried and just can’t pop out the notes on the lip slurs. And also, I’ve had braces for a year.

    • @alexbelles1370
      @alexbelles1370 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m literally in the exact same position (minus the braces). I’ve been trying to get a clean buzz for quite some time and it still doesn’t work for me. My teacher always says I sound tight and clenched and loosening just makes it impossible to play high 🤦‍♀️

    Hey when I play high notes on trumpet, I sometimes get a buzzing sound coming out one side of my lips. I told my band teacher about it and he said that I should try to keep the sides of my lips firm. I tried that but I still hear the buzz and this has been happening for a while now.

    This is difficult because i feel my lower lip curling under my upper lip so I'm technically not buzzing my lips. And my upper lip is a little thicker than my lower lip and I don't know how to break that habit for buzzing

    i’ve been playing the trumpet for half a year now and i still can’t blow through it properly. i’ve been thinking if the way my lips were shaped was the problem. they are naturally big, does it affect how you play?

    I'm a tuba player at my marching band... And my trumpet player just quit the band,and now I'm playing his place... I got a view problem, can u help me coach?
    1.I can't do octave or higher
    2.I blow it too loud..
    3.sometimes I put to much pressure to my mouth that air leaks from the left/right side of my lip

    • @TheBlackTrumpeter
      @TheBlackTrumpeter  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since you’re use to playing tuba with a bigger mouthpiece and bigger aperture size/vibrating surface, you have to....
      1. Work on creating a smaller aperture and directed airstream like it’s a laser beam. It’s the reason why you’re playing loud. Your aperture is too big
      2. Practice long tones at a soft dynamic on varies notes. This will focus your sound so it’s not airy and strengthen up your embouchure corners.
      3. Stick to smaller intervals until they feel and sound easy. Practice the chromatic scale in whole notes, half notes and then quarter notes (in that order and at the same tempo). Once this feels and sounds good then move onto larger intervals like 3rds,4ths and etc. if you have the Arbans book, gradually practice the “slurring and legato playing” exercises 1 thru 16. That might be pages 39 to 42 depending on what version you have.
      Hope this helps. If you need more help, the first private lesson is free for first-time students.
