There's a lot of changes that I really like.
Thanks for the breakdown, TH-cam rec'ed me this video and I didn't realize they started releasing this information.
Totally in love with backgrounds not only given more weight but the fact they give the character ability score enhancements instead of the species, but doesn't nerf species into a simple skin by still allowing them unique factors for play.
Not only that, but totally agree with hoping to get more interesting species-class combinations, either as a player or when I make NPCs as a DM I always like making unique combinations but sometimes they felt too contradictory or oddly forced if I were to go with raw DnD race-class combinations.
I will say, I actually like that subclasses are introduced at level 3.
If a DM wants to jump right in and everyone has prior knowledge and experience with DnD, they can just auto level up to 3 to start, that way it is no longer weirdly uneven to have just Some subclasses at level 1, Some at level 2, Some at level 3.... That's clunky and weird. Plus it's not too high level for early level campaigns.
Additionally if I have people who have never in their life played, which is often, this new change will be so much less confusing for everyone and much less overwhelming before forcing them to commit to a subclass when theyre still getting used to their main class.
I like to think of it as a sort of apprenticeship or college degree - at levels 1 and 2 you are getting to know how to play the base class, then at level 3 you "graduate" into a focus.
I think it can also allow interesting roleplay.
A cleric determined to study Light subclass in the name of their deity, but were exposed to or influenced by chthonic aspects of their deity in the first couple levels of the campaign and guided towards darker domains instead. A Fighter can learn how to fight and go on quests before figuring out their natural inclination towards a particular fighting style, a wizard putting their studied basics of spelclasting to practice before deciding or figuring out their preferred focus/subclass, etc.
Potentially a Guild or other grouping could send out recruits into the field to prove they're ready to graduate with their subclass i.e. a guild of assassins, a specialty kingsguard of arcane archers, a circle of wildfire who live near a volcano, etc, and potentially the inverse wherein a player breaks away from a group such as a rogue who decides to contact the spirits of the assassinated as a Phantom to avenge them, a druid escaping a spore circle cult and using wildfire to burn away the rot, etc. Lots of neat roleplay flexibility that also allows plenty of time for players to get used to their initial class before getting More things to worry and learn about.
    Really excited about Weapon Mastery.
My current campaign I printed out and tweaked some of the weapon abilities from BG3 to add a bit of spice to battles. While not exactly the same thing I'm glad it's something we're getting officially. Even just that much helps battle feel less like a grindy slog.
I was very skeptical, but so far I am enjoying seemingly everything so far. I'll definitely want to run maybe quick and easy oneshots just to get used to everything and see how it all works when its all officially released. I'll be optimistic about it.
Sorry for the novel length comment! I got really excited about the subclass thing, if you couldn't tell.
Thanks for the break down! Would love to hear more.

I'm never going to complain about somebody giving a detailed response to a video!
I do get your point with the subclass issue. It definitely seems like that's the way they wanted to lead it, I think you hit the nail on the head with it personally.
Weapon Mastery seems absolutely great. It definitely brings some much needed love to the strictly martial classes.
I was also very skeptical, but everything I know right now (which is more than this video) is getting me a bit excited.
There will be more videos to follow by the end of the weekend breaking down some class changes, so make sure you sub and hit the bell so you don't miss them, and thank you for the comment 🙂

I definitely agree with the ability to roleplay characters obtaining their sub class. Mechanically this move was to prevent one level dips from getting juicy sub class features which should be reserved for players that put time into learning that class.

Guess if you play aasimar you can play into that struggle of good vs evil or light vs dark as part of your character’s journey. Plus nothing to stop you as the player just choosing the angelic version until a suitable event happens when you can then use the dark version. I like that they are giving us that freedom to choose though I feel most DMs were giving their players the option as appropriate regarding what was happening to the character in game.

As someone who always spent a lot of time choosing what background to be and trying to tie it into my backstory and how the tool proficiencies were gained and how they could be used, I’m glad that backgrounds are getting more weight and credence ❤

Nick mastery from light weapons has changed how you can use a light weapon if you have the mastery in them. Any character who can wield a light weapon can use a BA to make a second attack, however if you have the mastery you no longer need to use a BA to make the second attack rather it is part of your initial attack as part of your action. So you free up your BA for other things whilst still resting that second attack from light weapons. Imagine this will be more beneficial for rouges

Completely agree with some subclasses starting at lvl 1. It not only make sence for the class past but allows for instant role-playing from the get go.

I will admit I kinda love graze on great weapons, in an article of DnDBeyond on this it says “it just goes to show that when a weapon is big enough, you don’t really need to aim where you’re swinging” 😂

For some of us who have spent so long learning the rules and the game, to find out it could potentially all change and have to adapt has been a bit intimidating. It’s nice to hear a breakdown like this from an experienced DM. Thank you!

I don't think they'll do it but giving your enemies attacks that resemble, or are, weapon mastery properties is definitely something to consider, to balance encounters.

They may do. They have mentioned fixing CR to a certain degree, but no mention of what that looks like, I'd assume until we get the monster manual

I agree, for some classes it just makes sense thematically for them to start with a subclass. Used to be clerics, warlocks and sorcerers started with a subclass which makes sense because sorcerers are born with it from a specific source, warlocks make a pact with a specific entity and clerics have devoted themselves to a specific god.
