If you goto home depot. Pick out your 2x4 and have them cut it for you to the size you want. Less work for yourself.

Are the nails so long that they poke out the other side? Wondering how the carpet is held up and what angle I need to have em at

Yes, the tacks do poke through the fabric. This video shows how a tufting frame will look with fabric attached:
