He didn't even come close to doing it the way his dad did. There's only a little shuffle happening there. I don't know what the hell that was. See the perdi shuffle for reference.
Not the BONHAM drum sound. The kit I'd TOO tinny sounding, toms need a THUMP tone not this TIN CAN sound. To replicate the Zeppelin SOUND, Ludwig kit only has the needed pure TONE.
Bohnam Sr drank an obscene amount of alcohol then passed out vomited and choked on his own vomit and died True story look it up So yeah I’m sure he really looks up to his Dad
All these people making comments about Jason not playing the shuffle. I don't get it. It's the shuffle to a tee. The syncopated hi hat pattern, open hi-hat on the correct beat, ghost notes....(which you can see the reflection of his left hand on the timpani). It's all there. I see more comments about him not having the power his dad had. Jason's technique allows him to hit hard without looking like Animal from the Muppets. John hit hard, and he had a great hand/finger technique when he wasn't flailing all over the place. Jason's is just different. Get over it. He is a phenomenal drummer and to have his name tied to the Led Zeppelin legacy is an honor any of us would be happy to have. It also brings unwarranted critisism.
Tony R - I know, right? He has been playing drums professionally since he was 19. He has never been in as high profile a band as Led Zeppelin, but who has? He is an amazing drummer.
Tony R - Also, the ghost notes: of course you can't hear them live, but you would notice if they weren't there. Kind of why they're called "ghost notes".
The beat was fine, It's an ambient recording. People who don't know music can't disect the patterns through the the muddied recording. In short. They're chatty little idiots who will never know music because they YAP too much, and don't listen enough. To hell with them. Wasn't that cool though!? Can you imagine Bonzo standing off stage watching his boy shred it? He'd be so proud. Way to go, Jason!!!
Jason Bonham is carrying the torch; honoring his Father's legacy. He was a child when he lost his Father. He lives through his Father when he plays his music. (It's obvious!) How many people out there today honor their Mother or Father? He is making a living playing in a tribute band honoring his father and the music of Led Zeppelin. Everybody is entitled to an opinion. It's not Zep, but I appreciate Jason and the Musicians he plays with. When people stop paying $$$ to see them is probably a good time to quit. I have a strong feeling that Jason will perform and people will see him perform until he calls it quits. Cheers...
Plenty folks honor their parents in different ways; they're just not celebrities. You honor your parents in how you live your life after they're gone...
I love Jason. Not only does he play just like his dad did but he keeps Bonzo’s spirit alive… and for us drummers who grew up learning from Zeppelin albums, we love this.
Jason you're just like your father! Brings tears to my eyes. Your father's spirit lives on in you, Jason. Keep drumming just like your father. Continue the legacy.
I'll let the critics be critics. For me, I got goosebumps, I loved it, I only came here to hear the drums, the rest are just accompaniments. Jason is awesome, peace
Jason is a barnacle off his dad's hull, he sucks, very average. You could do this if you were John Henry"s son. No talent, and if you like this you have no taste. I SAW the real Led Zeppelin, and this is pathetic
This is a very difficult song to play as a drummer. It is very, very, very nuanced. Bonham was always labeled as a hard hitting Neanderthal drummer but the song showed his talent. Few, very few, drummers can capture that feel. His son nailed it 110%
I just closed my eyes and went back what 33-35 years ago. Thank you for a really great job. Take it from an authentic fan I was born in summer of 65 and I grew up & older listening to real music like this.
Jason Bonham is actually a gifted drummer, who's shadowed by his father fame, no doubt in the 70s bonzo ruled, but his son is better after Jason's performance at celebration day was fantastic, that concert was the best.
I love how Jason put his own style of chops and fills in this song. He has his dads intensity and power drumming for sure. It must be such a thrill to play the same songs as your father on the same instrument he played
The apple from John Bonham's tree fell directly on his son Jason's head. He is just as good as his dad. His dad would be proud. What a studied player and such a great groove.
Yeah if I was John I wouldnt want my child to walk in my shoes. I would want him to find his own voice. He would be proud but it is not what he would have wanted
For those who don't know... The effect used in the guitar solo is an MXR Blue Box. It's a fuzz pedal that adds a note two octaves below the note played.
Awesome, Jason and crew! Your pops must be so proud of you, man. I know he's bragging' to all the other Rock Gods about his boy kicking' ASS!!! Keep it up, kid. We need more REAL music again.Much love to you, and respect to your dad.
Solid Groove, Brother Jason! I Just Came Back From Visiting Your Dads Final Resting Place In The UK!! One Of The Most Magical Places I've Ever Been To! Love From One Drum Brother To Another!
Anybody who knows anything about drumming knows that Jason Bonham not only nailed it, he took his dad's rendition to a new level. And John was no slouch.
For anyone who considers it appropriate to slate what Jason is doing at these gigs, and with his Career, you should hang your bloody heads in shame, all of you. I mean do you think he's attempting to recreate Led Zeppelin? No of course he bloody isn't. What he is trying to do is pay homage to the Legacy of his Dad,first for his Family, second for the World of Rock Music. If your Dad was the best steel welder, died too early but taught you his skills before he died, leaving you to carry on the Family legacy only for someone to come and slag you off how would you feel? Show some fucking respect.
Can't wait to see Jason in December. The closest I will ever be to my hero and that's alright with me! The legendary snap and pop of the mighty Ludwig Supraphonic lives on, played by nobody better than Mr. Jason Bonham. :)
i dont care what anyone says jason does his father justice is he is his father no can you imagine for one split second what its like to grow up and also be a drummer under his father.if i were john bonham there would be no prouder moment than watching my son play my music and im sure john is smiling down on his son .
Sure, it's not identical to his dad's part on the original recording but you know what? Who gives a shit. He does his father, my musical mentor very proud. Love on ya Jason!
Whoever filmed this obviously has a thing for Jason. I understand, It's Jason's band, he got the people to play, as a tribute band. They are not trying to be The Zep, nor is he trying to be his father. I think his father would be proud of the drummer and the man he has become. Seen interviews, he comes off as very humble, despite the upbringing he had. His father would wake him up to play for his friends, Sir Paul, Paul Rodgers, Ozzy, etc.
I think he filmed Jason the whole time because he wanted to show the drumming on this specific song. It's regarded by some people as Johns finest work.
Seeing too many comments saying he's not as good as arguably one of the greatest rock n' roll drummers of all time. All I have to say is I've seen these guys play 4 times, and I can't wait for the fifth. They are fucking unreal. Go see them.
come on people let's face it Jason has a big legacy to compete with but the shuffle is there just not so pronounced. He is a good twist on his old man.
It must have been super hard not only loosing your dad, but your dad is considered a rock god if there is ever one. Massive shoes to fill. JB is always at the top of Best Rock Drummer lists and that won't ever change.
Anyone who's seen Celebration Day knows that Jason has the chops to play all his dad's drum parts without any trouble. Which makes his take on Fool In The Rain all the more puzzling. Sure he's entitled to play his own interpretation, but the signature element of the drum part on this song is the Bernard Purdie half-time shuffle. Sadly this is a pale imitation without it.
He is playing a shuffle, anyone who says otherwise has no clue what they are talking about. It is in the same count and measures as the original. He is letting the ghost notes breathe a little more, and he isn't his dad. Sorry if he doesn't have his dads feel lol
Seeing a lot of comments about Jason was this or that and could he match the brilliance of his dad. Bottom line is, he lost his dad, we lost our drum icon, Jason lost his father. That's when shit gets real. RIP Bonzo and keep rocking on Jason.
I think Jason is right up there with his dad. Of course no one will play like John did, but his son has inherited his dad sense of rhythm and technic. He definitely has that feel that John did. I can see it and feel it.
I still like Jason Bonham. He can play as good as his father when it's needed. He's played Led Zeppelin music all his life, so when it comes to who's about the same as John Bonham, I'll say Jason is. That's why Led Zeppelin had him on their reunion concert at the 01 Arena. Jason knows all the studio versions along with the best concert versions. That was according to Jimmy Page, & those guys love having Jason playing with them.
That's why i never understood Plants reluctance to reunite for a tour with Jason. He keeps saying there is no LZ without John....he's right of course, but Jason can do an admirable job in his place. It would be the biggest reunion tour ever.
When did Jason claim to be better than his Father? John was a professional's professional. Jason is damn good though! The guy on the guitar isn't at Page's level either, but he is good too.
That was just beautiful x Was getting into Jason's drumming then the solo!!! FUUUCK!!! 10 out of 10 for every one in that band. Jason definitely did his dad proud with that one !!!
I was at this concert and there were 3 to 4 other members: a lead guitarist, a bassist, a keyboard player, and a backup/rhythm guitarist for a few songs.
Led Zeppelin of course was the ultimate band and no one can duplicate Bonzo. Jason is a good drummer but his father runs circles around him when it comes to speed and the power of his foot. For those for Zep fans, there is another cover band that really kicks some ass, Zoso. Saw those guys in Maryland and the drummer is pretty damn good but the guy who plays Page is fucking incredible. He has Page's moves down pat its like watching the Song Remains the Same in a live show.
Walt Dombrowski I gotta disagree. His technique is dead on. He doesn't play with the tenacity of his father, but hardly any other drummer ever has. Jason is a world class drummer though. He has his father's style.
1. Not many people can do the Purdie shuffle 2. He may not ever be his dad , but he is also not drinking him self to death like his old man did, and has already out lived him.
I feel for Jason. He has to think of his father every time he picks up his sticks. Any other family, he would be the most talented drummer in generations. He will never get the acclaim he deserves. I am not sure he wants it, as he seems driven to keep his father's legacy alive, but he still deserves some acclaim. He is tremendously talented.
Jason is having a blast and doing tribute to his Dad. Good for him. I don't care how he or this band plays compared to anyone else. I have a brain. I can pay good hard earned money if I want to, or I can pass on it, if I want to. Why do people feel the need to criticize it? If you don't like it move on. If you like it , enjoy it. Personally if I had a free night and some cash, I'd go. If I had to work or take care of kids then I don't go. Not a big deal either way to go see him, or not see him. Geez, just enjoy or don't. Nobody wants to read a critical analysis of the drumming or comparing the band to the original artist. I would go to see him drum, and yes at the same time, I'd very much Plant, Page and Jonesy's original work.
One of the trickiest drum parts in rock music. I have heard many attempt it and Jason does his Father's work proud.
a fine effort...shows you just how good pops was.
He didn't even come close to doing it the way his dad did. There's only a little shuffle happening there. I don't know what the hell that was. See the perdi shuffle for reference.
He's using too much of the high-hat pedal.
its sucks, he's a joke. I can do better on pots and pans
Dr Elvis lol fuck off
This was John Bonham's best drum performance. I have the In Through The Out Door Album signed by John and the band. . My prized possession.
In total awe of your relic souvenir. Bonzo was the greatest ever.
If it isn't already, someday it will be quite the valueable collector's item. Probably will sell for big bucks.
Whoa...that’s pretty cool tbh
But this is Jason, no?
@@howlingwaters2741 i think he just means the song, not this particular live iteration.
Solid ..Jason is his own man ....and he is doing his father proud .....respect the bonhams ......
Not the BONHAM drum sound. The kit I'd TOO tinny sounding, toms need a THUMP tone not this TIN CAN sound. To replicate the Zeppelin SOUND, Ludwig kit only has the needed pure TONE.
Thanks for keeping your Father's legacy alive, it will last a Century. See you in Hollywood, FL.
The fact that Jason wanted to drum probably made Bonham feel like the worlds greatest dad. Bonham would be proud of his boy.
Bohnam Sr drank an obscene amount of alcohol then passed out vomited and choked on his own vomit and died True story look it up So yeah I’m sure he really looks up to his Dad
I've played drums for 32 years, and I can say; Jason is phenomenal. That is one of the hardest grooves in rock history. Hes definitely bonzo's boy.
All these people making comments about Jason not playing the shuffle. I don't get it. It's the shuffle to a tee. Damn fucking right! Jason has been playing sense he was in diapers, look at him playing in the TSRTS. Fuck these idiots who don't play drums!

this is jasons favorite song of his dad's band... such a fun song for a drummer to play
I have played drums in Cleveland for 42 years and trust me I know what I'm talking about, Jason is the closest thing to his dad in the world period !
Scot Stephenson - That's cool to hear. It's my favorite Zeppelin song, too.
big T N-- I sure hope so.. He only observed and took lessons from him for the first 14 years of his life.. ;))
no the youtube channel Kick It Like Bonham is
big T N Well of course he is! He’s a Bonham after all!
God damn.... Jason just keeps getting better and better! He's got that feel like his dad.... This is beautiful.
no his dad was the shit, he is not his dad, keep listening
I’m Rick Harrison and these are my drum chops
Good on you Rick. Great chops, RJ.
"Creo q es falso".
Singer did a great job.
Shawn Lucas agreed. He sounds eerily like Plant on this particular song.
Yea right
@@willymccabe6602 He should've worn a Robert Plant wig to complete the image

I was at that show!! Awesome job by Jason to carry int the Legend of Lad Zeppelin!!
His father would be proud.Just a great drummer.
Jason you're just like your father! Brings tears to my eyes. Your father's spirit lives on in you, Jason. Keep drumming just like your father. Continue the legacy.
This sounds terrific! Damn the haters! Great job Jason, Dad would be proud!

BARRIEMOREBARLOW 110? Where does your sky ends.
I've never heard John labeled as a hard-hitting neanderthal. Anyone who has actually listened to the music can hear how phenomenal he was. Best ever.
But can he play Rosanna?
Ryan Donohue
lol..
probably yes on drums but not keyboard,piano..
Absolutely knocked it out of the park on the samba. The most difficult part, IMO.
Saw them in concert years ago enjoyed it very much nice small venue
I just closed my eyes and went back what 33-35 years ago. Thank you for a really great job. Take it from an authentic fan I was born in summer of 65 and I grew up & older listening to real music like this.
He was dead and LZ wasn’t a band 35 years ago. Maybe you’re referring to RATT or Twisted Sister?
Jason Bonham is actually a gifted drummer, who's shadowed by his father fame, no doubt in the 70s bonzo ruled, but his son is better after Jason's performance at celebration day was fantastic, that concert was the best.

He is NOT as good as his Dad, that's some hyperbole right there lol. His Dad was proud of him regardless.
ooops.

Oh man .. Jason is good. The apple did no fall far from the tree.

The effect used in the guitar solo is an MXR Blue Box. It's a fuzz pedal that adds a note two octaves below the note played.
Peter Gunn after watching the clip again I realized how intense the drumming is and what a genius BONZO was. Jason does a great job!
Loved this tune when I first heard it 40 years ago. Great version here!!
living in the constant shadow of his father. god bless him because he crushed it. i’ll always be a bonham fan, father and son. outstanding.

Jason your a great underrated drummer!! well done as usual!! cheers from Northern indiana
He is playing a shuffle, anyone who says otherwise has no clue what they are talking about. It is in the same count and measures as the original. He is letting the ghost notes breathe a little more, and he isn't his dad. Sorry if he doesn't have his dads feel lol
Nick Gallagher you got it!!! these TH-cam "drummers" an their comments. can't play 2 notes w a lesson
Completely agree! Half of these guys are Guitar Center showoffs
Can't tell because I can hear snare and almost nothing else.
Correct. The ghost notes can be seen in the timpani drums reflection. Though they are a bit quieter than his dad's.
Randsurfer. yeah, and snare sounds like shit.
I loved the intro! Dad is smiling down on you!
Or screaming up....depends on what transpires at the last few minutes of his life!
It's hard to watch Jason play and listen to the lead singer sound like Robert at the same time
Seeing a lot of comments about Jason was this or that and could he match the brilliance of his dad. Bottom line is, he lost his dad, we lost our drum icon, Jason lost his father. That's when shit gets real. RIP Bonzo and keep rocking on Jason.
Is Jason better than his daddy?? Or a close second?? Awesome 👍 👍 John would be sooooo proud
Don't be silly
I think Jason is right up there with his dad. Of course no one will play like John did, but his son has inherited his dad sense of rhythm and technic. He definitely has that feel that John did. I can see it and feel it.

Great Stuff, Jason. Well done you. Keep playing. Loved it.
Little Jason is 50 now, cut him some slack........................
A solid cover .....Imagine what it's like playing timeless material that your father played. awesome.
Good cover, but I am guessing there are other members of the band besides the drummer and singer? A shame we can't see them :)
wait, sorry, I misread your comment, thats why i edited it.
I was at this concert and there were 3 to 4 other members: a lead guitarist, a bassist, a keyboard player, and a backup/rhythm guitarist for a few songs.
well it's sort of a tour de force for Bonham hence the title of the post. Somewhere there's a Victor Wooten video of only Victor :--)

Walt Dombrowski saw them live too in Nebraska. They did really good. But sadly i wasnt under the influnce when i saw em :(.
Walt Dombrowski I gotta disagree. His technique is dead on. He doesn't play with the tenacity of his father, but hardly any other drummer ever has. Jason is a world class drummer though. He has his father's style.
I always loved jason's drumming. hes the real deal
Dude looks to be trying real hard to reproduce this beat. You will never be your dad.
1. Not many people can do the Purdie shuffle
2. He may not ever be his dad , but he is also not drinking him self to death like his old man did, and has already out lived him.
Song is timeless and never gets old!
Needs a better singer....
VWGTI Better go try out then.
vwgti, can you do any better?
Went and saw him when he last toured England and the man has still got it so i won't hear a bad word against Planty thank you very much
I feel for Jason.
