    Fantastic video! There is so much more to FT8 than "auto-qso" and most people don't know that. There's also a lot of different ways to change settings/accomplish the same tasks - for example when you were talking about the receive audio slider on the right, I control that with RF Gain settings on the radio.

    Wish you made this video earlier when I started with ft8! Perhaps an idea for a future deep dive....how does one actually participate in a digital contest? Is it any different than normal ft8 or ft4? If an exchange like a grid square or something else is required, how do you log that? Been trying to find out but haven't been very succesfull (or smart enough) in finding info.

    Superb tutorial! If only I’d seen this when I was setting up for Field Day I would have known about the Special Operating check boxes. Couldn’t figure out why contacts weren’t completing the standard exchange until well into to the Day. You covered what most need to get going. Having just switched from a Mac to a PC for WSJTX, nice to see how the setup differs slightly. The tuning procedures were really useful. I also struggled through moving the adi file from one to the other so I didn’t lose any contacts when switching to PC. Perhaps a quick video on how that can be easily accomplished would help other multi platform users. VA3MZD

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much. I didn't even know about the special operating boxes until I did this video and, wait for it, read the manual lol! I'm not sure how to move the .adi file from one computer to another. I'll have to look into that. I wonder if it's as easy as dropping the .adi file from one computer into the containing folder of the other computer??

    Is there a frequency on 2M or 70CM for this. I only have a dreaded B-fang. I am looking at buying that rig thing who's name has obviously slipped my mind at this time. When I can afford it, one of the Xeigu HF radios will come live in my house. Being a general, I have a larger array of bands and frequencies than I had before. Digital and voice interest me. I have a neurological malfunction that may make CW out of my range, time will tell. My callsign is K0XHF. The name is Kenn or Kenneth ( my mother said that when I was behaving badly) but I respond to it.

    I don't know if this has been answered before, but with a 13(?) character limit do you eliminate the grid square from your CQ if you're doing POTA / SOTA (i.e. CQ POTA KK8ABC for 12 characters), or do you put "CQ POTA KK8ABC CN72" (or whatever)?

    • @hamradiotube

    This may be a dumb question but what if you have something like an EMCOMM-III-P with the wire thrown in a tree in a sloping setup and you're wanting to do FT8 using a 7300. Do you have to press the Tune button on the 7300 every time you change bands in WSJT-X or is it just pick the band in WSJT-X and start RX & TX?

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you've already tuned the antenna on the 7300 it should remember the settings so you shouldn't have to re-tune when switching bands. In WSJT-X there is actually a setting I didn't know about when I made this video that will remember the tune settings in WSJT-X. It has nothing to do with the radio, but it should bring the power slider to where you had it on each band. It's under Settings (preferences on a Mac)>Audio> at the bottom of that window you will see "remember power settings by band" and check both the Transmit and Tune buttons. I still hit the tune button on WSJT-X and make sure I'm not pushing the ALC out of habit, but theoretically you shouldn't have to. Keep in mind, if you change anything you may need to retune both the radio and WSJT-X.

      @@hamradiotube Thanks..This is all new to me. I've had my General for a while but no HF stuff yet. Rumor Kenwood will be at Hamvention next month so I'm going to wait just to be safe. If nothing is coming I think I'll pull the trigger on a 7300 and Ecomm IIIP as I don't plan to leave up anything. My luck is I buy the 7300 and later this year or early next Icom will release an updated 7300 with built in wifi and a few features....thanks again for the reply

      You don't do it on the radio you do it on a computer. If you're on windows, right click the time at the bottom right hand corner, select Adjust date/time and click Sync now. You do need to be connected to the internet of course.

      FT8 is a weak signal mode. It's all digital and doesn't require much input from the user. But holy hillbilly is it fun!! You can work stations you would only imagine on phone or cw. Granted, you're just looking at a computer and not having an actual conversation, but it's pretty sweet seeing how far your station is getting out making contacts!

    I have not watched the entire video at this point. Interested in installation on MacOS 13. I have WSJX-X installed, but can't get it to recognize my USB connection to 7300. Might be my cable. I have a USB cable from something else. Do you have to install any drivers (from where)? Where did you get your USB cable?
    Peter WB3IZU

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You may need to instal the Silicon Labs USB to UART driver www.silabs.com/developers/usb-to-uart-bridge-vcp-drivers?tab=downloads You can check your USB cable by going to System Information > Hardware > USB and should see the Silicon Labs driver there once installed. Look under the USB Device Tree at the top of that window. You may need to scroll down until you see the silicon labs driver. Once you click on that it should show your 7300 connected and the location ID which is what you use in WSJT-X under Radio > Serial Port. As for cable, I use one from Tripp Lite you can order from my Amazon Store if need be www.amazon.com/shop/k8mrdradiostuff/list/1JGV63TG6OTM?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d They are nice cables with ferrites on both sides. RFI with a bad cable can and will cause connection issues with WSJT-X. Usually an audio error. Or just put a bunch of ferrites on your cable if you have them. Hope this helps.

      If you haven't found out: Tab 2 is used only by Fox stations when working in FT8 DXpedition mode, AKA "Fox/Hound" of "F/H" mode. When the Fox is called by lots of stations, the Fox queues up the callers by clicking on the callers' decoded lines. The queue appears in the left "Queue" column, whilst the right "In Progress" column shows the Fox which call signs are being worked at any moment. It is all explained in the FT8 DXpedition mode User Manual found in the main WSJT-X page, except there the queueit appears in Tab 3 (The original Tab 2 was removed in version 2.3).

    dude, how in the hell did you get your mac to see your radio. i'm trying to get mine to see a kenwood ts890s and i've done everything possible that i know of. I see the port after i downloaded a driver but no radio is showing up and the wsjtx software keeps throwing the radio not connected type messages.

      I'm not familiar with Kenwood's settings but this is the driver I use www.silabs.com/developers/usb-to-uart-bridge-vcp-drivers?tab=downloads Also does that radio have a built in sound card? If not you'll need something like a DigiRig or Signalink to get it working.

      Directly on a Chromebook, not easily possible (maybe with crouton - but ChromeOS may limit its access to the hardware)
      A workable alternative is to connect the radio to a Raspberry Pi (Ideally a Pi 4) and get WSJTX etc running on it.
      Then you use some form of VNC software on the Chromebook to control your Pi
