  • Old cine film of Brixham that I made in 1970 using 8mm film stock. the film includes footage of the old Western lady ferries.
Please note that the film is old and of poor quality, I did the transfer by projecting on to a screen and copying with a digital camera.

Regardless of the limitations of the technology back then in terms of definition, this is a very well made film, nicely composed and edited shots, no "hose piping around" good changes from long shots to MCUs etc. and of course us locals can enjoy the sense of deja vu, thanks for posting it.

Thank you very much for your kind comments, they mean a lot to me. When I made this film I was very hard up, I only had a simple cine camera and had only recently started with the filming hobby. When I get time I may try to re-copy the original, when I did this copy I only had a low res camcorder. The super 8 original is no where near as un-sharp as this copy. Thanks again, you are very kind.

Some great views of the old Western Ladies. The one with the white mast is Western Lady, the one with the bow dodger is Western Lady III and the other one is Western Lady IV. I think that Western Lady is on a temporary mooring near the old fuel jetty waiting for her regular mooring to be set on the other side of the fairway. Western Lady had new engines installed in 1972, I was master of her in 1974. Thank you for stirring memories of some happy times!

Many thanks for watching and indeed thanks for your kind comment. We went to Brixham every year for a long time, often staying at the now closed Berry court holiday flats overlooking the bay. So nice to hear you were a master or one of the ships, I may have travelled on her when you were in charge.

@@scrimperuk My Dad was also master of Western Lady before me, and in 1970 Dad was Master of Kiloran II, another vessel like the Western Ladies based in Torquay. I was one of the deckhands then. All Torbay resorts were much busier in those days, and boats carried thousands of passengers every season. I'm still in touch with some old friends from those days, and will be back in Torquay this August.

Great film and very nostalgic for me I was a deck hand on Western Lady lV my first summer job aged 16 in 1980 , fastest ferry in the bay at that time twin Gardner engines pushing along the WW2 naval Fairmile hull along at a brisk 12 knots.

Thank you so much for your very interesting comment. I was always fond of the ships and remember when several were mooring in the outer harbour.
