That 'paper thin' has aged well because that distrust and contempt reflects the Cult of Trump. Not everyone is as 'woke' as Ainsley. She was moved by Bartlett's compassion for a now-deposed and soon to be dead leader. I think she was starting to realize she wanted the job but the "Does it have to be THIS White House?" was keeping her from committing. When she overhead the comment about being a token it probably stung and why she argued so hard and ended up convincing herself to take the job. It's her monologue that is important, not her friends. Even so, she hasn't totally sold to herself that she'll matter. Later she rewrites Sam's opinion and waits for Sam to see she reversed his opinion. She's testing Sam. To her surprise, what she did matters. Then she knows - she was right to take the job.
