In this episode of Crash Course Physics, Shini talks to us about a particular mistake made in engineering the Millennium Bridge which allows us to talk about simple harmonic motion.

    Great video as always. I know some people are complaining about the speed of these videos, but I actually think it's great to have such an option. For people who learn better through longwinded explanations, they can watch khan academy, and people who learn better through quick and snappy explanations can come here. The great thing about the internet and the technological age is that there has never been a more customizable learning experience. There's something for everyone. Oh and unlike crash course organic chemistry, which barely helped me at all in my first semester of ochem, _this_ series actually will get you through calculus based-physics 1 and 2 in college. I love that you aren't afraid of alienating the fans by actually getting into the technical aspects, and believe that the experience and educational value of these videos has benefited profoundly for it. Keep it up!

      The problem is that in order for people to truly learn and remember the topic, they must go into much more detail and take a lot longer to explain it. The details stick instead of having information go in one ear and fly out the other.

    I honestly loved this so much. I missed a few lessons at school on simple harmonic motion and for physics I like to see how the ideas connect and don't really like just being thrown a bunch of equations and being expected to use them with no context at all. Loved this. Related all the equations beautifully + increased my appreciation for physics xox

    Again a really nice video, I like the graphical examples for physical/mathematical expressions. As someone working in a university's institute for physical chemistry I know how many students even in higher semesters struggle with those topics. I really hope you make videos about thermodynamics, kinetic and quantum mechanics.

      Online videos of education are purposeful made at such a pace.
      The intent is that for someone trying to learn via video, as opposed to learning via teacher in a class room, you can stop, rewind and watch the video at any point and any number of times. So for a broad audience, people that pick up more quickly, and those more slowly, can all utilize the medium.

    Really great video. I never saw a derivation for w=sqrt(k/m) without setting up the equations of motions and just using calc. That was really cool to see. The analogy with circular motion is something I don't remember seeing but I think thats a really great way to visualize it.

    That was a much easier to understand explanation of simple harmonic motion than anything I heard in uni. But then again we needed to know how to manipulate the differential equations behind all of this.

    This is very good. For those saying it's too fast.....well, i too have to pause and rewind quite a few times so that i can understand the material, but i don't think that detracts from it. There's a limit to how easy these guys can make it. Physics requires thought. Great job, Crash Course. Keep 'em coming!

      Yeah, except that diameter is absolutely useless in math. There are infinite shapes with a uniform diameter, but only one, the circle, with uniform radius. If you want to talk about how things move in time, you're talking about eigenfunctions of the derivative, which give you exponentials, which give you trig functions, which are expressed in terms of the radius of the circle and the circle constant, τ. From harmonic motion, to periodicity of trig functions, to the complex exponential, to Fourier transforms, τ shows up as the fundamental circle constant. Only when a factor of a half is involved does π appear by itself.

    Great video! Slightly fast paced, but nothing a little pausing and rewinding can't do. Don't understand some of the people that of they don't understand everything on the first moment they just go whining around that it's too fast.     How does a particle (like the ball on the spring) exhibit an angular speed (omega) if its trajectory is linear? Also, wouldnt omega constantly be changing due to the changing velocity?

    Check out some clips about the tacoma narrows bridge, that's an extreme case of what oscillations can do to a badly designed bridge.

      The Tacoma Narrows bridge failed due to aeroelastic flutter, not resonance (at least, according to the mechanics professor from my degree). Aeroelastic flutter is a positive feedback effect: as the bridge oscillated and tilted, the wind striking it at an angle exerted a force. As the force cause the oscillation amplitude to increase, the bridge deformed to a steeper angle, exerting more force and deforming it to an even steeper angle until... well, y'know
