    The 35 1.8 is my favourite lens for sure, it's more than sharp enough, with amazing AF performance(no focus breathing too) and extremely portable because of its size. It stays on my A7C 90% of the time.

    I rented the 1.8 for a wedding this year, and the extraordinary sharpness was immediately apparent to me in comparison to my 24GM, Zeiss 55, Batis 85. The 35 1.8 is definitely the next lens on my list.

    I initially purchased the Sony 35mm f1.8 but traded it in for the GM just a couple of months after I bought it and have zero regrets. I primarily photograph people at sunrise or sunset sessions, and the chromatic aberration from the f1.8 added more work to my workflow trying to fix it. Also, in some scenarios the bokeh from the f1.8 was a bit distracting at f1.8 to my eyes. The extra 2 aperture blades on the GM makes a difference imo

    I’ve owned both for a few years (now on my second copy of the GM as I initially sold my first copy). From my experience and for my usage the only significant benefit of the GM is the better low light performance (weddings mainly for me). The 1.8 significant benefits are less focus breathing, much lighter, more reliable autofocus. So the 1.8 imo is the one to get unless you really need that extra 2/3rds of a stop of light.

    I’ve owned many 35mm lenses and the Sony f/1.8 when it first came out. Eventually sold it when the GM 35mm f/1.4 came out ( also had the Zony 35mm f1.4 ZA) but last year picked up a Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN to use with an A7C because it had an aperture ring. Also picked up other Sigma I-Series lenses to use with it as well. Using my GM primes and zooms on my A7RV and A1’s so I own both. Now my A7C has been replaced by the A7CR and using it with the Sigma f/2. Have you ever compared the Sony f/1.8 with the Sigma f/2. Reason I ask is that I might need yet another 35mm so I’m wondering what to consider. Thank you for your videos.

    I also have the older Sony/ Zeiss 35 f2.8 lens which is as compact as the Sony G 24/40/50 trio. That makes the a7C a very travel friendly package. It has no buttons or rings but it is featherweight and easily found in the used marketplaces.

    The slightly wider FOV on 35mm 1.4 GM may be due to focus breathing compensation on some bodies, as camera crops the image. So after crop it probably does look the same as 35mm 1.8

    • @BrandonSallinger
      @BrandonSallinger 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think FB compensation would affect raw images.

  • @TsvetanVR
    @TsvetanVR 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I can't help but wonder - if you're forced to go to f/2.8 to get rid of CA and get better image quality out of that 35mm 1.8, is it really worth the savings compared to, say a 24-70 2.8 or a 16-35 2.8? Those zooms, while a bit more expensive, do provide multiple quite often used focus distances in just one lens (24, 35, 50 and up to 70 for the former; 16, 20, 24 and 35mm for the latter) which might make them better bank for buck if the quality is not that much different. I did shoot an indoor symphony concert a week ago (on my A7 IV) using both the 85mm 1.8 and my now sold APS-C Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 (@35mm FF mode) and both produced really high-quality images without noticeable difference. I did find out that I preferred both of them stopped down to 2.8 as I was getting a DOF so shallow that I couldn't get both ends of the violin or both hands of the performer in focus at 1.8 anyway. So in that case, unless there's a situation that absolutely demands 1.8 (or 1.4), wouldn't one of these zooms (especially the 24-70) be more practical while still not being worse bang for buck than even the 1.8, let alone the 1.4 GM?
    P.S. While I do appreciate compact size and light weight when shooting my 50mm 1.8, I don't really mind heavier lenses for the versatility gained, especially since I'm used to shooting wildlife with a 2kg 150-600mm compared to which all of the above are light- to super flyweights.

    • @DylanBlackburn
      @DylanBlackburn  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You definitely have a point a lot of people will agree with. Personally I (along with many others) hate using zoom lenses. Would rather have a 35mm 2.8 that’s more compact than the 35mm 1.8

      @@DylanBlackburn Oh wow, I'm not used to getting an answer on videos more than a month old, let alone so quickly!
      All I'm trying to do is make sense of it for myself so I can spend my money in the best way and not get sucked into an endless buy/sell cycle trying to get a combo that will work as quality glass costs a pretty penny and quickly adds up when you want to cover different types of photography and focal lengths as you're not dedicated to just one type of shooting. I already upgraded to the A7 IV this Black Friday, got a good deal on a Canon EF 70-200 2.8 IS that will do for the time being, a heavily discounted 50mm 1.8 on BF and looking to cover the rest of the focal range by the end of the Christmas holidays.
