I'm still coming down from Ken's huge turn 3; ramming Laurie wildly off-course, shooting Jon off the checkpoint twice before charging in to take it himself, and then intentionally throwing himself off the edge of the board all in one turn. Unbelievable scenes.
I played a large version of this at Dragon Con once. By large, the 'robots' were about a foot tall, and the board covered a small room with an announcer reading off (with cheek) what everyone did. I nearly died laughing when someone ran off into a pit, and the announcer said something like "After that success, so and so capped it off by flinging themselves into oblivion."
fyi, you get 3 upgrade cards for free and pay to activate them. If you want more than the 1st three, you pay one cube to get one upgrade cads. Second, but 1st with info
Great fun. Just a rules clarification, an "again" card in the first slot behaves exactly like a "Spam." A random card off of the top of the draw pile is revealed, and the robot moves accordingly.
I love RoboRally, but I mostly loved the chaos. In older versions you all turn around your register cards simultaneously and the one with the highest value on the card would move first. So if someone was behind you, they could really screw your turn over. It also just locked your actions if you got too much damage. These spam and haywire cards weren't a thing. You could indeed also take a full turn of doing nothing to remove all damage you had gotten. I have a relative new version with only two boards with two sides. But for the really old versions there are expansion boxes with way crazier boards. I once played a 12 hours long game with 4 old school boards where we had to jump a lot over the abyss, because that particular board had more pit spaces than move spaces. And they all had bumpers to jump. I think the game was ended by player elimination. If you died 3 times, your robot was permanently broken and you were out of the game. I think that's the best part in this newer version though. You cannot actually die. I am a big fan of that and I might actually houserule that into my version.
As another player of old school roborally, definitely the individual player decks do look to speed up the game, however you really lose out on the what numbers are on the cards played to determine the order. On top of that this new damage system really demonstrated it's issue where as long of the spams were out of the deck and none of them had put back in so people were only getting haywires towards the end there. Definitely miss the slow degradation of less cards to play, and then the eventual cards locked into the slots. As far as the respawns though, yeah it's really easy to house rule and drop the number of lives so no one is ever fully out of the game.
Is this the game he originally went to pitch, but instead Magic got picked up because it was cheaper to manufacture at scale? I recall it being discussed in Mark Rosewater’s podcast ‘Drive to Work’.
@@sullymaniaWell, they were indeed worried it would cost to much, so he made MtG to finance it. And somehow, the "cheap" game became massively popular.
I still own a copy of the original '90s version. Looks better IMO than this one, but these rules make a LOT more sense.... You can see there's been 30 years of deck building games experience.
Each player draws 3 Upgrades at no cost at the start of the game. You only pay 1 to draw 1 after that if you want more options. So you have a good chance of being able to buy one before the game even starts.
Robo Rally was the first non-traditional (ie not chess or backgammon etc) board game I played. It's really fun and hectic! If you're interested in the game, try to get the older version; it has a timer and more hectic maps and weapons for the robots which means silly things are more likely to happen. The new version is also good though, we usually play with the addition of a timer and have our own cards in the deck to make it more crazy. :)
I love RoboRally, the chaos is always great. That said, 3 rules things that I noticed while watching. First, as others have said, you start with 3 upgrade cards. Second, you discard all non-damage cards from your hand after programing is finished so you can't hold on to cards without something like Jon's memory card upgrade. Third, Again in the first register is supposed to act like spam, getting a random program card.
Every time I watch one of your videos, I find a new game I want to buy. So far I've gotten Nemesis, Love Letter and Skull from your playthroughs. Add this one to my wishlist.
1:16:50 - Laurie's path this round is a great demonstration of why "Turning it off and on again" fixes so many problems. His programmed action would have gotten his goal, but one little nudge out of sync and it caused an extremely unpredictable result. If he could 'reboot' his sequence any point after the 'glitch' Ken caused, he'd get to his goal.
We played sooo much first edition Roborally back in the day. This new version looks like an improvement in most ways, and I think the old boards should still be playable so I may have to get this.
Well, this makes me really want to play this game again. I still have the Avalon Hill version. I definitely need to bring this for my work game night. Just the perfect example of "Lay out your perfect plan, and watch everyone else f*** it up!"
I've only recently discovered this show, and I am having an absolute blast watching the episodes! Best boardgaming show by far! Sully is super cool, and I like Laurie cause he reminds me of by best bud "Shoe" but all of the Cast are amazing, I love when Rosie gets off the henges! A++++++++++
Considering how much chaos there was in this playthrough, just imgaine it they played the older editions of this game, where everyone flipped their cards. And th cards had a numeric value that decided who went first and so on. MAXIMUM Chaos
You guys should play Mech's vs Minions from league of legends. Also a programming game, but instead of racing each other, it's a coop-game where you work together to complete a mission.
Would be fun to have a version of this with a system like that starship building game, where you build up the bots and do combat/survive traps with parts falling off and stuff haha
The word 'slut' is said a lot more times than I would have expected for a game about robots. Also, here in Australia "on the gear" means to be partaking in methamphetamine/ ice. Which was amusing to hear.
At Some Points You Rotated The Wrong Way. For Example, Before Laurie's Haywire On The 2nd Programming Phase, He Rotated His Robot Left Instead Of Right Like The Gear Said.
Played Magic with Garfield with pre-production cards that he was using to try and raise money to have them made professionally. Did not invest, stupid me.
The one time i played this before we did not do the overflow haywires right… we started filling the row all over again, i maxed out at having 4 haywires on a single activation, gotta love being the center of robo attention and traps for 3 rounds :-|
I'm still in the part where Laurie explains the game and this already sounds fun. What I would love to see is each player shuffling their cards and programming their robots randomly, not knowing what their robot is going to do. That sounds like chaotic fun.
What is the definition of a round 55:47 the card says for one round, is it a round of activations or is it when the first player marker is passed around. If it is the former than jon would not of been tractor beamed if you like, if it is the later or ladder jon would of been tractor beemed
I used to own one of the first copies of this game, and played it frequently. Unfortunately, being a long-time programmer gives me a real advantage playing the game - even including the other robots and how they might interact or interfere with your planning. (Back then, even the simplest board was more complex than this one, though.)
I'm still coming down from Ken's huge turn 3; ramming Laurie wildly off-course, shooting Jon off the checkpoint twice before charging in to take it himself, and then intentionally throwing himself off the edge of the board all in one turn. Unbelievable scenes.
Ken absolutely smashed it
@@efriammarizan5337 Ah godammit I can't count.
Wait until you see a bare ankle
I find it so ironic that the first thing Zoom bot did was to get brakes installed

Sullivan with that One Turn Tractor Beam caused more havoc then I have caused with a Tractor Beam for a whole game.
2:40 Who’s going to tell Laurie that a U-turn only rotates you 180°, turning 360° would leave you facing the same direction you started.
Came here looking for this comment😅
Also turned the wrong way on the green gear later.
Considering the number of times they turned completely the wrong way, I'm not surprised that they got the degrees of a U-Turn wrong.

Man, this is the biggest "Drunk friends having a hell of a time" vibe in a while. So much fun to watch!
Yay more "Monopoly but..." this Saturday! Also Robo Rally seems like a fun game.
What do you think it’ll be? Monopoly but historical? Monopoly but fantasy

I remember playing this back in the 90's because of Richard Garfield being the guy who created MTG

1:09:22 "I planned for everything except for Ken!" This can be said of every episode that Ken appears in.

I love that Lorna wrote her name in the felt
I love how even before they started they knew that 6 checkpoints was never going to work in the timeframe haha
whenever i see dom before the start of the board game i get so excited!

Robot Wars reference within 60 seconds let's gooooooo
Every time I watch one of your videos, I find a new game I want to buy. So far I've gotten Nemesis, Love Letter and Skull from your playthroughs. Add this one to my wishlist.
Wow, I can't believe jon's robot exploded Tumblr's CEO's car (with hammers)
Congrats to the winner! This looked hilarious, fun, and all sorts of chaotic.
Ken wreaked havoc. Poor Lorna just gulping lasers.
Monopoly but... Might just be my favourite thing from this channel which is huge since i love everything they all do
Nooo robo rally has traumatised me for 20 years now
I love that the character bios became weird dating profiles REALLY quickly
Richard Garfield, 1990s: "I'm going to make a family-friendly robot game."
Lorna, 2024: "Slutbot disagrees, with her big cannons and deep holes."
My friends and I would play the first version. We would go crazy, 4 or 5 boards, random positions of flags. Man those were fun times.
Fantastic move by Ken on that third turn

YES
I have wanted to see this ... for years maybe.

"chaos, CARnage, and mayhem"
sign me up
37:01 'Again Card' in 'Phase 1' works just like a "Spam Card".
I helped playtest this game and some other renegade games. I love this game.
Teaching both tactics and programming logic. I love this game.
1:03:55 the actual continuity errors are amazeing and may I me think how addorable laure looks in the bow now
Love this game. Wish it was a phone app. It would translate so well!
I've always wanted to play this. Looks like incredible fun.
Great game ... hope it gets played again in the future.
This game does a very good job at showing the ease, and annoyance of block based robotics programming languages
We played sooo much first edition Roborally back in the day. This new version looks like an improvement in most ways, and I think the old boards should still be playable so I may have to get this.
I want you guys to play this again. It's very fun to watch this one
Hour and a half? Yes please
Of course, success in Robo Rally relies on balancing four categories of things. Style, Control, Damage, and Aggression
Was this game designed by the inventor of Magic?
Poor Sully. I don't know how much fun this was for him getting shot a million times and moved at the worst times lol
He certainly didn't look like he was having fun and I don't blame him
I have the old version, LOVE this game!
Sorry to be that guy Laurie, @ 2:40 surely you mean 180°?
Well, this makes me really want to play this game again. I still have the Avalon Hill version.
I definitely need to bring this for my work game night. Just the perfect example of "Lay out your perfect plan, and watch everyone else f*** it up!"
Laurie with the high quality 10/10 Robot Wars reference
This was a super fun video! Really good
Dom sounded like Attenborough 😂
Good to know Laurie has joined the Powerpuff Girls. 🎀😁
Loving this new intro

40:24 and 40:29 That robot turned the wrong way on the gears.
This never happens when i play the game, oh, no, not at all. 🙂
Lorna is absolutely hilarious in every appearance she has made on this channel!
This game is amazing! I hope you play it again with Terri(sp?) Showing their hay wires so we can try to sus out their plans...
18 Board roborally. Never again.
Fun to see old head shakers being played here!
Not Laurie calling a U-turn a 360.
*intro starts* "Why does laurie wear a Bow? Oh sully is wearing a crown, ok"
You guys should play Mech's vs Minions from league of legends. Also a programming game, but instead of racing each other, it's a coop-game where you work together to complete a mission.
Tiny epic mechs has similar mechanics but it sort of king of Tokyo type.
Laurie is serving Sunny Baudelaire
Would be fun to have a version of this with a system like that starship building game, where you build up the bots and do combat/survive traps with parts falling off and stuff haha
Would love to see them play this game again with a different board set-up
this would be a crazy editing process, but y'all should do a supercut of just the robots moving...
I wish I had a gaming group because this would be on the list of games we would play it looks so fun
The word 'slut' is said a lot more times than I would have expected for a game about robots.

This was a really fun one!
Was this tinder for robots? 🤣 😂 🤣 brilliance
Everybody starts with several upgrades at the start of the game (that still need to be installed for energy!
i have a game like this, but with pirate ships and dice. it is pretty fun, but much less chaotic.
Make a plan, Execute the plan, Expect the plan to fail, throw away the plan
The U Turn card would turn you 180 not 360.
I'm still in the part where Laurie explains the game and this already sounds fun. What I would love to see is each player shuffling their cards and programming their robots randomly, not knowing what their robot is going to do. That sounds like chaotic fun.
Interesting rule changes in this edition.
Lorna is so good :) love seeing more of her in the videos!
as a Bott hearing you all with my surname was fun
Slut Bott changed my mind
i regret my surname after all
One of my favorite games
So funny!
actually really liked this :) i know its asking a lot but can you do this again please !!!
but at least 3 check point or 4 :)
If Laurie isn't wearing the bow every week...
I loved the continuity shift. Jon looks like the cutest, gayest grandmother and I love that for him.
Wow they changed things with some new cards. I have the original version, and the one from the early 2000’s. Like the way to power up.
I love Lorna's constant lewd remarks. Made my day! 😀
Jon in a video? Time to see if the coin flip game show will happen this time on "Unravel or Not Unravel?"!!!
I don't think it's even close to 50/50
Escape from Colditz
Also, Hello Blair from Redmond Ore. Belonged to Western Oregon Wargamers on 7th and Main in Portland.
Turning around is 180 degrees, not 360
great video
Lorna is the greatest
I'm surprised that long ass intro's still cutting it on this algorithm. That's some old timey youtube vibes. :)
