Slept in the woods when it was -20 degF. Lost two canoes and had to hike out. I miss those days, but I get to watch your video. It's awesome. I've only done two trips on the east side of the Winds, one out of Dickinson Park, south of this area, and one around Bomber Basin, north of this area. Be careful the Winds are addictive.
I will say that there are quite a bit less people coming in on the reservation side. I'm pretty sure I'm already addicted. This is the 3rd year in a row that I've spent a week there!
Oh yes the east side is much less crowded. Did you have to pay to cross the reservation land? In 2014 when I started at Dickinson Park I had to pay $55 to drive across the reservation land.
There always has to be some type 2 fun on a trip, guess Sonnicant Lake with that wind was it! lol What a fantastic trip. The scenery was stunning and those lakes magical. :) Thanks for sharing your adventure! :) :)
The Winds! Yes there is something special about that range. Looks like a Bruin has been creating a ruckus in that area. That pass you went over had great views and some interesting rock formations. Some pretty intense storms. Dogs looked like they were having a blast! Beautiful area! Another great trip! Cheers! 🍺
That pass was a rough one more me coming right from the trailhead, up and up after a 10 hr drive through the night to get there. Oh... and the elevation... geez! I was on the struggle bus up that pass for sure! But I LOVE going over passes! Not much beats working hard up the climb and then getting the views from where you just were, but then you go over the pass and a whole new world opens up!
@@mountainwanderer Damn! That sounds tough. Plus not sleeping on that night with the wind would knock out seasoned backpackers with that level of insomnia. Bet you'll remember that experience. I love passes, they are like gateways between worlds really. I like to pretend I am Gandalf every time I hit the top. Haha! There are so many options in that range. I've got a BRFC again, so I won't have to hang my food the next time I'm up there. But I'll still hang my dishes. I'd be afraid to see what a Grizz could do to a titanium pot. Great to see an adventure from you. It's been a bit.

@@mountainwanderer Been thinking on getting the Warbonnet Mountain Fly. 11 foot. I’ve had a few instances where having a 12 foot tarp has been 6” too long for what would otherwise be a perfect spot
I was thinking of that trail for this year. Was looking for a partner and reviewing what I could about the road. Then Read the Wilson Cr drainage was closed due to “an aggressive grizzly that was habituated to human food. Too many trails in the Winds that don’t have that kind of a problem. They are still looking for Steve Keller north of Wilson Creek Lakes . I guess going solo makes me more cautious. Enjoy your videos when I run across from them. Among the best to be found.

We didn't see much of any sign of bears (expect for all of the warnings), and we ran into the Outfitter that is shown in the video a couple times and he had been in to Wilson Basin a few times to resupply his clients and he hadn't run into things. But we also had dogs with us and when we're in camp one gets excited and barks a bit. We say it creates a "wildlife bubble" around us since everything and everyone knows we're there.

There are more trout cakes on the way! Last year we did two 8 day trips. This year the trip was broken up into a 7 day trip and a 3 day trip, so it was closer to 10 days without a shower.... windows were down on the way home.

Don't you need special permits from the Shoshone/Arapahoe to start from the TH on the reservation? Yes. On the reservation you need a special permit. We got the 7 day permit which ended up being around $100. That includes a fishing permit (whether you fish or not). The most you would see in the other ranges that you mentioned is that there might be a self-signed permit at the trailhead. No cost.
Looks like your question did not very answered. I don’t have videos like these guys, but I have 43 years solo backpacking from the Sierras to Northern BC and east to WY. Two trips to the Winds this year. The Bighorns come next year. Of the three ranges you mentioned, I would favor the Sawtooths. More like the Winds minus the rain. Seldom rains much. You’ll escape the crowds beyond the first lakes at around 7 miles, and up over passes to get to the interior, you’ll have complete solitude. The White Clouds don’t have jagged peaks, but less people, better fishing, and more Mtn goats like around Castle Mtn. The Wallowa trails all seen to head toward the central lakes area where it will be really crowded. Still worth it and a day hike to the top of one of the many peaks are spectacular. The Eagle Caps have pretty mild weather compared to the Winds and you won’t get lost like you can in the Winds. All three of your choices are suitable to take people who wish to avoid super challenging trails and crazy weather. None of the three have worries of grizzlies

We've been doing trips for years with ever increasing challenges & FUN! We visited the Bighorns this summer for their first taste. YES, I'm trying to avoid grizzly country for at least one more year while they get comfortable with the other challenges (altitude, miles, off trail travel, etc). Safe travels in the backcountry!

I think that the "Trespass Permit" is $20 to drive through? We got the 7 day backpacking permit, which was $90, all together $110.

My tarp has taken some punishment this year! It's still keeping out the rain though (as it rained on m on my last trip).

Those trout cakes looked excellent. What all did put on that?
They are pretty simple: English muffin (toasted, always toasted), cheese, tartar and trout!
