I think he's a genius. His Square Word Calligraphy has potential practical application. Indeed, I often use it in daily life to write English words in a Chinese way that is both elegant and useful.

This is an really impressive person. His work have surgically stimulus on the mind with physically ideological changing. When I see the trash ink-painting work, the idea behind that work makes me recall one of the Zizek’s project about trash. I believe he has nearly the same idea with Zizek, as he mentioned his ultimate purpose using new method to express unprecedented idea and feeling, in similarity with philosophical meaning defined by Zizek. Although they have different theme laid on the distinct method, the core of their thinking is the same.

So, you have contacts and resources and decide to make dioramas and carnival figures out of junk? It's the artisan equivalent of those silly, expensive ripped jeans bought at the mall. Not very impressed.

It is not about what he makes, but it is the context within he makes it and the messaging behind it. If you only focus on the tangible end product, you are missing out on a lot in contemporary art.

@@johnnytony593 while you might not be able to appreciate this work, or even see it as art, Xu's Book from the Sky aren't "carnival figures" made "out of junk". every single character out of the 4000 unique characters that are printed on there were carefully and intentionally carved from pear wood to replicate Kangxi radicals in a way that follows traditional Chinese characters. to a Chinese person, the work is unintelligible but resembles characters they know in an uncanny manner. no matter the interpretation of the audience, one cannot dismiss the extraordinary feat that is the intricate carvings and printing of every scroll and page in the installation.
