    • @davidcox3076
      @davidcox3076 5 ปีที่แล้ว +111

      Yep. The army realized the 37 mm wasn't powerful enough for a tank destroyer. The M8's turret was too small to fit any larger caliber. So it went off to war as an armored car. But a high-velocity 37 mm round in just the right place could still do some damage.

    My Dad crewed an M8 in France and Germany. BTW, he NEVER called it Greyhound...it was always just M8, to him. I first read this story years ago...when I told my Dad, it was the first time he had heard about it...he said “somebody must have eaten their Wheaties that day” . The version I read had the tank, described as a Tiger, driving on a sunken road, with the M8 high up on the berm shooting downward at the engine cover. Sounds more likely to me, I’d be surprised to see the 37mm penetrate the downward angled rear armor on the King Tiger.
    Dad had no illusions about the capabilities of the 37mm gun, but he did have good things to say about its use on bunkers and buildings. He also liked the canister load for machine gun positions in the hedgerow country at Falaise Gap.
    Really, the M8 offered a lot of firepower with its 37mm, it’s 50cal and 30cal machine guns.

    From what I've read there's probably been some embellishment in the story. The rear of the Tiger II tank is protected by 80mm of armour at 60 degrees; the 37mm at best with the M51 Shot would only do 61mm straight on at 500 yards. There's very little chance a M8 could penetrate a Tiger II's rear, unless there was something seriously wrong with the steel in the Tiger II.
    Furthermore, there's disagreement that there was even a Tiger II in the area on that day; per German records, no Germans divisions within the area were officially equipped with King Tiger's; the original battle report from what I've read indicated that they've only killed a Tiger, and didn't mentioned which type. In fact, the nearest Tiger II were the ones assigned to SS.Pz.-Abt. 501, which was operating with Kampfgruppe Peiper, of the 1st SS-Pz.Div. LSSAH, which was in 6. Panzer-Armee. Their route was far to the north of St. Vith, way out of the way. While it is possible one Tiger II may have gotten separated from the rest of the unit, I don't think it's likely.
    The only other German division that had Tiger II's in the general vicinity was the s.Pz.-Abt. 506, but that division was down near Bastonge and was no where near St. Vith.
    However, since battle claims are usually extremely dubious (enemy tanks were frequently mis-identified, and the same battle report also indicated a Ferdinand or an Elephant was also killed, even though none were even in the theater), it could have easily been something less impressive, such as a Panzer III or a Panzer IV. At best, it could have been a Panther, since that looks somewhat similar to a Tiger II, and the rear armour is thin enough that a 37mm could put a shot through. Hell there's even been after-action reports in which American troops have claimed that a bloody StuG was a Tiger...
    Edit: Furthermore, it was pointed out to me that every single Tiger II lost by the SS.Pz.-Abt. 501 (the closest unit with Tiger II's) was photographed heavily and documented fairly extensively. Pretty much all of the post-battle photos of St. Vith showed Panzer IV's and StuG's.

      Except it wasn't a King Tiger, it was a Tiger I. The Battle report only references a Tiger, the 501st SS panzer division was the only deployment of Tigers during the Arden offensive, and they only had Tiger I tanks. Also Tiger II has 80mm sloped rear armor, a M3 gun could never pen that, even at point blank, Tiger I has 25mm rear armor, doesn't take much to realize which tank it actually was.

Given the three shots were literally fired from point blank range and put all three rounds into a small area. It is possible to over match the 80mm rear armor. Or more plausable they fired through one of the two large exhaust stack resonator covers which are much thinner than the main armored panel and are of a simple casting. I never understood why they would cut large holes in the armor for an exhaust resonator instead of just routing it up and over the top of the armor?

    Wonder why the Tiger didn’t just turn around? The M8 Boss! OK boys, its Miller time! Dad told me a story about a man on a Grizzly Bear hunt that found some tracks and went trailing one. When later he came to camp and they asked him, where’s the Bear? He replied, I decided to let him go, the Tracks started getting a little too fresh! Thanks Mark! Great as usual!🤔

      Nearly all of Germany's heavy tanks were destroyed in the war, and nearly none of the allies' guns were capable of destroying them. On paper.

    • @vasili1207
      @vasili1207 5 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      After reading reports on the gun ...... There is no way this happened. . If the gun couldn't pen a possible stug at 75 yards no way it kill that tiger. Here is a report of a stug attack
      "Later in the day, the Germans attempted to retake the hill with one heavy assault gun (est 105mm) and a few infantry men and succeeded in penetrating our position. From 100 yards he knocked out two light tanks. However, the advance of "A" company's tanks concentrated so much fire on him and held their ground so effectively that he lost his nerve and retired from the fight, with his supporting troops, if he had any left. The 37mm gun on the Light Tanks did no appreciable damage to the German self-propelled weapon, although over 100 direct hits were placed on him from ranges varying from 75 to 500 yards." [21]

    • @Mr3344555
      @Mr3344555 5 ปีที่แล้ว +99

      You wouldn't survive a rank battle. Situational awareness is gold, even if there's armor, if the distance 25 yards as stated and the armor is 30°, if that close with your turret facing down, you're basically aiming at a wall. The back is armor, but not just armor, it has mufflers, and hosing, etc... if the explosion happened in the outside, the shockwave, and some shrapnel and some of the explosion would've pushed it self into the engine compartment, and damaged the engine. Which would either casatrophicaly fail or just die on them. If you're bias, you'll find bias. It's plausible.

    The M8 greyhound armored car was Dad's favorite vehicle in ww2. Soldiers actually would have races against each other in those things to entertain themselves and kill time. Sometimes the races could result in deadly wrecks. Most of the duties were usually fairly mundane. They were not heavy fighters, and usually employed against light opposition.

    Amazing how many stories are out there of lone tank actions. Ordinarily a tank never operates by itself, but always as part of a tank platoon/troop. There should have been at least two other tigers supporting the first one, using fire and movement tactics (2 tanks assume a hull down position while the other 2 [sometimes just 1] moves forward to the next position from which to support the others in turn). And where there’s a tank platoon, there’s always a tank company/squadron, itself part of a battalion and regiment. This tank sounds like it was lost trying to catch up to its unit, rather than acting as the spearhead of an attack.

    • @barthoving2053
      @barthoving2053 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Part of a heavy tank battalion was there only because of traffic jam at the main axis of advance of the army-group it actually belonged to and the force tried to find an alternative route. Which can explains a lonely heavy tank as it's just scouting ahead as the heavy tank battalion in this stage of the war apparently only consisted of heavy tanks. As the unit's around it are from another sector coordination would be bad. Also the wooded and hilled terrain made your proposed fire and movement tactics hard to pull off and it would slow the unit further down while it's already behind schedule. War is chaos were textbook procedures and plans are quickly thrown out of the window as they do not match the reality.

    • @jamestheotherone742
      @jamestheotherone742 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@barthoving2053 Actually no. At the late stages of the war a heavy tank Bn. or Co. would have had a variety of models. Lots of Pz. IVs etc. in adhoc kampfgruppen. And using a (at this stage priceless) heavy tank as a scout wandering around by itself is a good way to lose your heavy tank. Even in the chaos of war stupid is still stupid. It was probably just lost.

    Then as they opened fire at the Konig's Tiger;
    - “Come one! Hit those bastards!”
    After killing the enemy tank;
