People don't talk about Static Shock enough. It was pretty groundbreaking for the time and covered some serious topics, while also introducing me to one of my favorite superheroes to this day in Static. One of the coolest designed characters in comic book history for sure
Personally, I've always felt Static Shock had too much of the "trying to be 90's cool" feel. Especially since it was part of the WB block where everything was trying to appeal to kids (even though it didn't need to). John Stewart Green Lantern though, I've always thought he was more interesting than Hal Jordan or Kyle... I forget his last name.
Bruce Wayne hired a black CEO for Wayne Enterprises, and his kids, Jace and Luke, secretly work with Batman. Plus he adopted Duke Thomas, so Bruce is a pretty cool guy!
Storm is one of the best all time superheroes. Her character look is iconic. Sadly no movie has done her character any justice. Her best portrayal in in the 1990s cartoon series.
Rumors are the next gen of XMen will be young like first class so we’ll definitely get another run at Storm, possibly wed her to TChalla Jr once they age him up some. Storm and Gentle would be nice additions to the next Black Panther entry as they roll out mutants too. Either way I want to see the Dawn of X/X-Men Red rosters so we get both the 90s crew and as many POC as possible.
I feel the same way about Halle Berry's Storm as I do about her Catwoman,........looks absolutely amazing, probably the best looking one, but her acting is just trash
Would be cool to have him sat in a tiny elevated podium talking to the audience as if he was telling the greatest bed time story of all time Black history While still being for the culture!
The history of Black Lightning and Black Vulcan is interesting: When Hanna Barbera was making the Superfriends cartoon they wanted to use BL but they would have to pay royalties to the creator so in order to save money they made Black Vulcan. A similar thing happened again in the early '00s on Static Shock when he met an electric black superhero from the '70s named Soul Power. Black Lightning also has two daughters who are electric and super. As a result of one guy there are 5 electric black supers, two of them being legally distinct ripoffs.
6 if you count Storm, 8 if you count BL's daughters. 10 if Soul Power had daughters. 11 if we count villains, Electro. And I'd bet money there is at least 1 black power ranger with lightning powers
Actually, Tony Isabella, BL’s co-creator, wouldn’t allow the TV producers to use the character. Money didn’t have anything to do with it. “Batman/Superman: Public Enemies” was BL’s first appearance in any show or film.
Missed out on mentioning that Black Panther was the first black superhero to have his own self-titled book, that Storm was the first black superhero to lead a superhero team, and that there were two black heroes in mainstream comics that predate Black Panther: Jackie Johnson in DC's Easy Company and Gabe Jones in Marvel's Sgt. Fury and the Howling Commandoes (both were military servicemen in integrated units of specialists (Easy Company and the Howling Commandoes) in stories set in World War Two).
One minor correction. Storm wasn't a priestess, when first introduced, she was worshipped as a goddess. EDIT= I do understand how some may get the info confused as Ororo Munroe aka Storm is the daughter of a priestess. fun facts= 1. Storm was actually born in the USA to an American father David, and Kenyan Mother N'Dare. 2. David was a photographer and the family was visiting Egypt when local fighters bombed the area. This killed David & N'Dare and left Ororo buried in rubble. This left young Ororo with claustrophobia. 3. Ororo grew up as a thief in the streets of Egypt (think city was Cairo but could be wrong) 4. as a teen she traveled south to Kenya and as her powers awakened, that's when tribes began to worship her.
If we're doing corrections, there is a black Batman now and he does come from generational wealth. He's the son of Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman in the Nolan movies) but moved to New York to fight crime at Batman.
I used to watch every episode of X-Men Evolution, read some comics, collected cards, and various other shows and movies, and I didn't realize that Spike was Storm's nephew. Wow.
There actually was a comic in the 90s where Wolverine was getting harassed by airport security because he couldn't make it through the metal detector! And Storm is the best member of the X-Men. This is all true! ...but I'm surprised Spawn didn't get mentioned. Spawn was arguably the most important comic character in the 90s.
You know it wasn't until the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern movie that I knew there were multiple green lanterns. As a child I just thought John Stewart was The Green Lantern
Well Roy Wood Jr. Has covered Horror &now Comicbooks, now I can't wait for if he'll ever do a skit about the Sci-Fi or Fantasy histories, &then it's like a completed set,
This is my favorite story. In 1989, when McDuffie was an editor at Marvel Comics, he wrote a biting, satirical pitch that has since become industry legend. In his pitch, McDuffie points out that 25% of African-American superheroes appearing in the Marvel Universe over the last year have had skateboard-based superpowers or fighting styles, and proposes a new team to take advantage of this and other equivalently exciting trends, featuring four black guys on skateboards.
@@gemelwalters2942 Luke and T'Challa are newer than Blade? And I don't mean classic immune to vampires Blade, but kickass leather and is a Daywalker Blade. Likewise, Static is a direct homage to Black Lightning who was mentioned. I'm not sure I buy into that logic.
Lion Man... Cat themed superhero in Africa protecting a valuable ore? I do have to wonder how much Black Panther was "inspired" by this. As a geek, I am required by nature to point out... John Stewart (the GL, not the former Daily Show host) existed LONG before the modern trend of black replacement heroes. (My favorite of which is Dr John Irons, btw.) But then, given the GL corps has had members that are a gas (Flodo Span) An Equation (Dkrtzy Rrr) A Smallpox Virus Variant (Leezle Pon) and a planet (Mogo)... I don't think a person of a different skin color than the most popular GL is much of a stretch. Among Bruce Wayne's many temp Batman replacements is Timothy "Jace" Fox. He's the son of Lucius Fox, so he probably is heir to some generational wealth, even if his dad was the first generation.
Lion Man's comic had only one issue. It might have inspired Black Panther somewhat, but you can take those quotation marks off. John Stweart was created in the early 70's and it was definitely a trend in the 70's.
I don't know about any of these apart from John Stewart The green lantern because he was in justice League unlimited. And then I also didn't know about a Bruce Wayne replacement
Colonial powers have robbed Africa of it's resources for centuries. I think it's reasonable that two heroes based around concept could happen totally independent of one another.
We did get a black batman. And what about black superman? Also no black panther mention? Or the history of milestone, Dwayne McDuffie himself, or the static shock show? There is so much worth mentioning here that a part 2 is absolutely necessary.
Great segment, but I have to correct Roy here, there are actually 2 black Batmen, a black Batwoman, and a black Robin (who later became his own Bat-themed superhero) in DC Comics canon.
This does not change the fact that in Australia there are 48 million Kangaroos and in Uruguay there are 3,457,380 inhabitants. So if the Kangaroos decide to invade Uruguay, each Uruguayan will have to fight 14 kangaroos.
@@NeilPro42 No, that's his brother, Luke Fox. It's also foreshadowed recently that Luke is changing up his name and look in order to be a bit more unique, wearing a fox themed costume.
