The problem with Cooper is his style of play. It is simply not sustainable in the Premier League. Anti pressing anti possession low block football apart from being horrible to watch is the reason why we dropped well over 20 points from winning positions and was also the reason why we only won 1away game in our first full season and that was against the team who finished bottom of the league. I am grateful for what Cooper achieved at us and he is a genuinely a nice bloke but his football leaves a lot to be desired. In the championship you can get away with his style of play because the quality of the league is simply nowhere near the Premier League, if you put all players behind the ball and be defensive for over 90 minutes it creates such an unnecessary amount of pressure you are almost bound to crack. You will get a few wins by the law of averages but overall it simply isn't a sustainable way of playing. I understand you can't go into the Premier League playing free-flowing attacking football, but not to press an opposition team home or away is such a strange way of playing.

His style of play was brilliant in the champ and for England, it's just when your crazy owner bought nearly 50 players of rejects and unknowns for the same money as Bournemouth spent on maybe 20, breaking every rule he can in the process , your lot are deluded pal

This could be a really tough job. I think he could well if you consider the circus that might surround Leicester next season.

Forest fan here, I love Steve. I will forever be grateful for what he did for us, to go from where he found us to where he left us was a miracle, and I was heartbroken at his leaving, even if it was perhaps time. I wish him and Leicester all the very, very best. Our rivals are Derby, and after that I most want to see us beat Liverpool. Facing Leicester doesn't feel any different to facing any other side not one of the biggest guns, and Steve will 100% get a wonderful reception back at the City Ground.
The story of his time at Forest was generally of great flowing football counter-attacking against weaker sides, but a far more pragmatic approach against anyone who might be as strong or stronger than us. In the Championship we won 2 of 12 against the rest of the top 7 in the league, and were a bit lucky to say the least in the play-offs. In Prem that pragmatism was ramped up. In that first season only 2 of our wins were by 2 goals, most of the rest were *very* tight games that were in the "could have gone either way" category, and I'm not sure there was a single game we "controlled" in the way Leicester did pretty much every match last season.
Like you say though, he's always learning, and I think the Foxes will get a better manager than we had because I think he will have looked at what he got wrong and improved. I think this might just be a masterstroke appointment.

Coops did an amazing job in the first season. Bear in mind of the play final team, Spence, Garner, Lowe and Davis were loans, Samba wanted to return to France. Grabban retired and Zinks went as well. There was always going to be a major turn over of players and that Coops was able to create a brilliant team spirit, despite us getting toned most weeks says a hell of a lot. Frankly the dippers don’t deserve him.

Forest fans will be forever grateful to SC for getting us to the PL and the second miracle he worked in our first season by keeping us up. But in our second season his pragmatism and low block began to grate on many fans and our lack of progress. I think, for whatever reason, SC lost his way. I personally felt we played better football under Nuno without necessarily getting the results. I hope SC gets the reception he deserves when he returns to the City Ground ( if he’s still in the job by then) he is held in great esteem by the vast majority of Forest fans. Only time will tell whether Leicester is the right move for him. Plus the supposed ‘rivalry’ between us andLeicester is way overblown. There is only one ‘Derby’ for Forest and it ain’t Leicester.

  • @jontalbot1

A lot of people seem to think he puts out low block teams only. That was forced on him at Forest after the scattergun recruitment policy he had nothing to do with. He is like all good coaches- he adapts to circumstances.

    Hi Benjamin,
We love watching your take on things in all thing’s football and everything you have said is spot on. For me and my son we are over the moon it’s Steve Cooper who has got the job over Potter and one thing sticks out for us and that is he actually wants to be here and manage the foxes where as Potter we feel ummed and arrred and was stalling and would most likely of jumped ship if a bigger job became available. Obviously we are speculating and feel Cooper will play a style which will play to the strengths of the players we currently have. There is no guarantee off course of staying up and if we fo go down then he has the experience to bring us back up again. Cooper did an unbelievable job at Forest and is use to the adversity that is likely to be coming our way in the points deduction we will get. Overall it will be tough but we have the right man at the job.

For me its a bitter pill to swallow given it looked like we were getting Potter 24 hours ago. A pragmatic manager might be what we need to stay up and I hope he does well, but I see no future in his style of play in the prem.

That might be as maybe if you're sawn off with (in my opinion very unfair) points deductions and player sales. But if the worst-case-scenareo plan is to bounce back stronger again, giving Cooper a year to start shaping things before he storms the Championship again isn't the worst idea.
