A lot of baby girls, future wives that their sons could have married, were aborted Due to the one child policy. It kind of sucks that the only way to get china to culturally care about women is to impact Chinese men.
1 in 5 girls were aborted. If you are poor you are more likely to have a girl because the zygote containing the x chromosome is more resilient, if you have an easy life you are more likely to have a boy because the y chromosome is fragile. Being poor impacts your nutritional intake and this can affect the gender of the baby. Lots of y zygotes get self aborted by the body because of stress and poor living conditions. Temperature can also affect the gender of the baby. If you are constantly cold it might kill the infant inside of you, if you can afford to heat your house in the winter your child will survive.
Those in the city had the money to pay for a girl, then they could try for a boy. But those in the poor countryside would abort girls so they could have a male son as traditionally sons were the only ones that inherited and they also got the family name.

My best friend was conceived in China in 1991 with her parents already having one child.
Thankfully, her parents and sibling were able to immigrate to Australia before her birth! Her parents went on to have a total of 4 children and were incredibly financially frugal for over 20 years. The result of this is that her parents retired quite young and are living in their own beautiful home in Sydney (all 6 of them had lived in a 2 bedroom home behind their restaurant for the previous 20 years!)
I often think that families like theirs are the kind who would have truly benefited China as a whole. Their 4 children became a pharmacist, accountant, engineer and a doctor. Due to the one child policy, China forever lost an incredibly hard working couple, but also 4 incredibly talented young people (3 of which are now parents themselves!)

Society is not completely broken, stop being over dramatic. Even though inflation is high people right now are living better than they were 100 or 200 years ago. If you have a child you can and you will make it work, it's in our nature. The reason people are apprehensive is because they are surrounded by too much information and freedom of choice. If you are continuously bombarded by how hard and impossible something is, you're going to eventually believe it. Humans were never meant to be overloaded with this much information at such a fast past, it causes them to overthink things and make overly cautious decision to a fault. Not having children is not selfish, it's a personal decision that everyone should be able to make for themselves, regardless of their economic status. Rich people don't owe the state children any more than poor people. What's selfish is forcing others to have children regardless of their wishes because YOU think they should have them.
If governments want people to have more children, they should provide economic conditions where people feel secure and know they won't be left with nothing should something happen (like losing a job or a serious illness in the family); where they can believe in a safe future for their kids (physically, economically and politically); where they know they can still thrive professionally as parents (so childcare and especially incentives for women who clearly invest more time and energy into having a child than their partners, and who still bear a disproportional burden of childcare, which affects their earnings and, as a result, their quality of life when they retire); good healthcare during pregnancy and birth (and of course later for the children); and also they should destigmatise and support single parents and invest in fertility treatments for people who want to have children. Forcing ANYONE to have a child against their wishes is just wrong and cruel, both for the parents in question and the children that are born to them.

Politicians are hell bent to cause problems on society because they can validate "our necessity of them", because they sold us not jist the "solutions" of their self inflicted chaos, but the idea that politics is inherently necessarily to resolve problems; in reality they have nothing really valuable to offer and they know it. In short, politicians always dragged us down to their level in the pits of filth.
The least thing we have to give to politicians is trust, which is the source of their "power", we trust they're capable but they are not, we trust they're gonna do their job but they don't, we trust them to make the best decisions and surround themselves with the best people to help them but they are a mafia, and lastly we trust them they'll think on our best interests but over and over again they show how disposable we are to them.

Not the only victims, men have it very hard too, unlike women they aren't born with value unless daddy is rich and gives him value.
In fact, you aren't even considered a man if you don't pay a dowry, have a house, car, good job, savings, be young and handsome, tall, funny, charismatic, giving, share money to her parents.
Right now, young women have it very good in comparison. If they don't find a partner before 27 is because they were searching for Mr. Perfect, they got themselves to blame for that one since they wasted the only value they were born with.

I’m American, and old enough to remember when we were firmly told not to have children we couldn’t afford and everyone was worried about overpopulation, pushing rubbers, IUD’s, pills, and sterilization. So, we didn’t have children we couldn’t afford. Twenty years later, and suddenly we were “selfish” and “having bad priorities” either having no children or maybe two? Few of us could afford more than two; many couldn’t afford any. I went into poverty to have my two kids, as many currently middle-aged women did. 😕

Yes, I've noticed it of some cultures - as well as China, Europe, Scandinavia, Japan, the Antipodes. Far less children, more young people saying no.
It's not just the very high cost of living, practically unaffordable for Millennials, it's the very obvious and calamitous decline of the environment too.
I don't know how much world news these young Chinese have access to, but they know well enough (through their own news system) that the environment is clearly in freefall.
Who in their right mind wants to bring a tiny child into a world that is overheating in some places, flooding in others, harsh storms in others? It has already been said that the very young and very old are most vulnerable to heatwaves and wet bulb events.
When things get really desperate, and you may have to resort to migration across country or to another country, the last burden you want to bring with you is young children. They always want, always need, cry and scream when they don't get it, must be carried when they are tired, and it's devastating to watch them perish. History is full of heartbreaking stories of children and/or their parents buried by roadsides.
