Great video, Chase! It's awesome to see content focused on sharing our love of film with our kids. Keep up the great work! This is the first year I've gone all in on horror movies with the kids for the Spooky Season. We've already enjoyed a couple of your general horror recommendations. One of the best things about being a Dad is getting to pass on the stuff we're passionate about!
Monster Squad is number one for me. It helped me introduce the Universal Classic monsters to my kid. We watched Frankenstein, Bride of.., and Dracula afterwards. Very rewatchable. The first Amicus film (and some classic Hammer films) worked well too. She loves Dr Terrors House of Horror with Cushing!

Great Video!! I would love to see Hubie Halloween get a physical release. As well as some of Netflix's other Halloween/horror titles like The Curse of Bridge Hollow, both The Babysitter movies, and Totally Killer. It would also be amazing if we got the Ernest movies on blu ray.. That Kickstarter for Ernest & the Dream Stone graphic novel looks beautiful. Can't wait for that.

We have been trying to figure out which movie to play that won’t offend parents but also won’t be too cartoony or cutesy and ruin the spook vibe we have going. For instance I can’t play Hocus Pocus at the back of a realistic cemetery display and not ruin the creep factor. Anyway thank you, this gave me some good ideas that I wouldn’t have otherwise thought of and ones that were not on common family friendly Halloween movie lists online. Big help, thanks!
It, Van Helsing, Ghostbusters Afterlife, Ghostbusters Frozen Empire, The Addams Family, Elvira, Arachnophobia , Scooby Doo, The Frighteners, Beetlejuice, The Monster Squad..... All fantastic, fun films! You look adorable in those glasses.
I usually dont like family friendly movies but i was pleasantly surprised by Rob Zombie's 'The Munsters' remake. His workd building in that film deserves a sequel or two.
So glad to see Ernest Scared Stupid get the respect it deserves. It might be one of my most viewed movies of all time. Trantor the troll is and will always be my boogeyman. The movie is the perfect mix of scary and funny. I would add the universal monsters. They are undeniable classics and because of the time they came out they are about as clean as you can get in regards to horror.
Addams Family tops my list, and we watched this a lot growing up, great humor in that. I personally love that Uncle Fester is the main character in both movies, and both movies are about the FORTUNE he's to inherit. Tremors was a huge favorite of my parents and my sister and I growing up. And they played it on TV a lot too here, in Illinois. Reba McEntire! Thank you for including Ernest Scared Stupid, that's probably the most family friendly horror movie I've ever come across. I always forget about Little Shop of Horrors, but it's a very unique movie! The fact it was a stage production first really adds character. Any movie based on a novel or stage production is usually better quality, IMO. And thanks for mentioning Van Helsing, as soon as you said Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde are in it I knew immediately that I'll be watching it. Haunted Mansion has always been my favorite ride at Disney World, not crazy about the movie though... thought it was odd. We went to Disney Florida in 1991 and the guide at Haunted Mansion took my hat off my head in the room where the walls drop. He was trying to spook me. Then we went again in 2021 for 4th of July, it was again my favorite ride! 😊
@@AVAPopCulture I love the vault, with all the gold. I used to sing that song they played when Gomez and Fester slide down to the vault. And I love the Siamese twins Flora and Fauna, giving the scoop on Fester's money. Cousin It getting together with Tulley's wife!!! Funny.
@@AVAPopCulture btw, have you ever seen Mr. Boogedy? It was a Disney family horror from 1986, and not a cartoon either. It spooked me as a little kid. It aired on TV as a Disney Sunday Movie.
The Witches is interesting BTS....Jim Henson who exec produced it died of a strep throat infection soon after in 1990..and Dahl died months after the movie came out. He would sit outside cinemas with a megaphone telling people he didn't like the ending of the movie before he died. Also the production company that made it folded after too. Crazy man.
Great list! Definitely the films I use for intros. I have 2 adult kids that still won’t watch Arachnophobia or ANY spider movie. Scooby-Doo is a must. I love the old animated movies. I just introduced my nephews to Frighteners not long ago. Ernest & Monster. Squad are a must. My Favorite Universal Monster is The Creature From The Black Lagoon. Been to Silver Springs where they filmed it many times. I introduced my granddaughters to Hocus Pocus a few years ago. And the way they got their brother to watch was to tell him there’s a talking kitty, who gets hit by a car and comes back to life.
thank you! yeah, it is important to find good intros - and whatever you have to tell them to get them interested will work lol... I love Creature too btw
I remember seeing Arachnophobia in theater with my babysitters kids. I would have been 8 and Jamie (the babysitter's daughter) would have been 10, there were other kids too. Some girl threw a golf tee at Jamie's head during the movie. It was this big dramatic situation when we were leaving the movie. Lol. 😂 I look back now and think "Kid Drama!" 😅 BTW, that movie COMPLETELY freaked me out and I have had a fear of spiders ever since!!! I think there's a scene where a lady turns her lamp off and the spider drops from the inside of the lampshade! Terrifying!!! 😊
I was wondering when "Something Wicked This Way Comes" would pop up. I watched this one with my son years ago and I hadn't seen it since I was a child and it still held up. The end scene with the Carousel was great. A solid list, thanks.
My kids are teens now, but I showed them a lot of Kid friendly horror movies when they were young. My favorites for that age are Coraline, Corpse Bride, Paranorman, Monster House, Frankenweenie, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and Nightmare Before Christmas.
Nahhhhhh…I was dying when you were talking about Earnest Scared Stupid. It’s such a funny movie!! 😂 My daughter and I just watched Jeepers Creepers and Paranorman and it wasn’t too bad. She is 10 years old. Loving the content, as always!!
I just have to add one of my favourite scary, non animated, kid friendly movies, The Burbs with a very young Tom Hanks. It has a serial killer next door, a mad scientist, ghosts, bombs, slapstick, it has it all for kids. Some of the ones you’ve chosen are for older kids like Beetlejuice which has self harm content as does Frighteners. True, the mad scientist in my choice is from Russia but Dracula also explores the allure of the Eastern male. Most don’t even notice the bad guy is a foreigner and an illegal alien at that. Still like it though.
Good list. I would also like to add to your list: HalloweenTown The Halloween Tree Super 8 And even though it's Rated R, I remember seeing Aliens as a kid and has also shown it to my cousin's kids when they were just about middle school age and it was a fun time all around.
Just watched the Birds too and I couldn't believe the little girl is Veronica Cartwright from Alien and Invasion of the Body Snatchers!!! Man her film career was amazing.
I just ordered a few movies based on your recommendations from this and other videos of yours. Monster, Dark was the Night, The Sentinel and Casper (I've never seen this!!) to name a few. I'll let you know what I think.
The actor from Hocus Pocus is underrated. Omri Katz. He was great in Joe Dantes Matinee. And Eerie Indiana is such a great show that doesnt get enough love these days.
Nice list! O love these ”friendly” horror movies! Am waiting for my Frighteners box from Turbine. Ordered from Amazon. Seems to be slower from them but when it arrives I will be soooo happy! Ever seen ”Santa”s Slay”? I think it could fit even if it has a scene with ”naughty” strippers… otherwise I think it is not too mchh and fun! Cheers!
Completely agree Hubie Halloween needs a physical release, iv made my wife watch it yearly since it came out. It really has the old school Sandler feel to it. Also fun fact, the masks in Ernest Scared stupid are repurposed from Killer Clowns from Outers space
Monster Squad and Something Wicked This Way Comes have to be my top 2 family friendly Halloween movies. Both are great movies. A movie you did not mention that I think could make the list here...The Gate. 1987 movie starring a young Steven Dorff.
thanks man! my long ago pre-order of five nights at freddy's 4k arrive about 30 minutes after I finished this video lol...my kids are fans....but Im kinda meh on it
Can't count the number of times I watched Ernest Scared Stupid as a kid (and every other Ernest movie). I'd also like to recommend a not often discussed and sorely under-seen gem of a Disney horror movie called The Watcher in the Woods. It's technically family friendly, given that it's Disney and there are no on-screen deaths, but DAMN does it deliver strong creepy vibes! It's legitimately scary. A must see!
@filmpositive6601 a lot of people have been mentioning that lately...I feel like that is one I somehow kinda missed.... we were too poor for the Disney channel so maybe that is why? Lol I just don't recall seeing it around when I'd have been looking for it in the ealry-mid 80s which is odd because I know the original 100 minute version was released in 1980 then Disney did a bunch of re-shoots and re-cuts of the ending and the version that is out there is like 14 minutes shorter I think...I need to check it out and see if I have seen it and just forgot
@@AVAPopCulture It's a hard one to find since Disney all but practically buried it. My local video store had a DVD copy a few years back, which is how I saw it. Wish I would have seen it as a kid. Probably would've slept with the lights on for years. Haha
I had already showed my ten year old most of these..so I figured I'd try The Thing..oh boy BIG MISTAKE LOL. She noped out during the dog transformation...she loves dogs so much. I learned my lesson lol
If you want something similar to The Thing, and I don't think any dog bursts into a monster in it, you could watch an episode of The X Files called Ice. It's season 1 episode 8. It's based loosely on The Thing as well as a science article at the time. It's set in Alaska. When I recently watched The Thing my first thought was X Files. 😊 BTW, The Thing is Chase's Monday movie (tomorrow) for his 31 day challenge. 👍
@@benbelzer8303 oh man yes it's about time for me to do a X File rewatch. Aging myself here but I grew up watching the original broadcasts of the show and I was a huge fan of it. Ice is a fantastic episode for sure. Dude I can even remember the promos hyping up the pilot episode. It was an exciting time for TV.
@@beyondz55 It's the number one reason I watch Hulu. Hulu shows unedited scenes too. If I ever get my own movie room and start buying seasons of shows, X Files will be one of the first I buy.
Nothing beats the classic Scooby Doo, Where Are You? series. And no one can top Tim Curry's performance in the original It. For a TV mini-series, it had some of the best (and funniest) one-liners of any horror film. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward totally killed it in Tremors. Nowadays they'd scream toxic masculinity at a buddy pairing like that. A favorite that's a cross between Tremors and Arachnophobia is Eight Legged Freaks. A total throwback to the drive-in monster movies of the 50s. Not to mention it's got Kari Wuhrer. If that doesn't sell it, I mean...
My 5 year old when he was 4 loved IT Chapter 1 and Five Nights at Freddy's, and I'm surprised I have like 18 of these movies, only exceptions is with Witches I have the remake imported from the UK and not the originals. And if Netflix and Disney was smart they would release Hubi Halloween and Hocus Pocus 2 on physical
Does anyone remember the disney movies in the 80s Mr boogedy and bride of boogedy? Those were good for family friendly horror movies... another good one is little monsters with howie mandel and fred savage
In my opinion, the IT remake completely lacks the charm and chemistry of the original. In original you feel like you actually know the characters. Now the new Pennywise is scary as hell but Tim Curry was just spooky and morbidly funny. Love IT from 1990.
@@AVAPopCulture Not crazy about any King remakes except The Shining but that's probably because it was filmed just across the Hwy from my mother in laws house at the Stanley Hotel and I watched them shooting it lol.
So, as you know, I have It in a steel book case for regular Blu-ray, The Witches was a definite one I would add to that list as well. I wasn't much of a fan of Scary Stories as I read the book back in middle school and the movie just couldn't match that to me. I recently picked up Adam's Family and Adam's Family Values on Blu-ray. That's funny you say that about Casper when that's one I have been considering for a while but just haven't gotten yet myself. Even though it's not really horror I would say Spaced Invaders with the whole thing taking place on Halloween could be added. Even though it's not a movie, I'm glad I picked up Courage the Cowardly Dog on a Bluray set as it's family-friendly but has some really unsettling episodes with great atmosphere to them. I have Scooby-Doo, but that's one I got for my partner more than myself. Killer Klowns from Outer Space is one I had no idea has only a PG rating. I have The Frighteners on DVD, but I'm considering getting the Blu-ray that has both versions of that film. I should have known I would have most of these ones, too. Even Beetlejuice I picked up pretty recently on regular Blu-ray. I have Monster House on 3D Bluray, and that's another one I would put on my list that even takes place on Halloween. You could also include Coraline and Paramorman from Laika, which I have on DVD. 😂 No way, Chase, I seriously quote the same lines from Ernest Scared Stupid all the time. It's how to I refer to milk to this day.
@@anthonymerchant2597 I had to add the witches on here even though I just have the vhs! Lol And how about we have a little authentic Bulgarian Meiak this morning? 🤣😂

Haha
Two awesome little kids movies that are actually good is UNDER WRAPS 1997 & RL STINES HAUNTING HOUR DONT THINK ABOUT IT 2007 THE MOVIE
I used to watch Ernest Scared stupid every Halloween.
I had already showed my ten year old most of these..so I figured I'd try The Thing..oh boy BIG MISTAKE LOL. She noped out during the dog transformation...she loves dogs so much. I learned my lesson lol
LOL yeah that part might do it!
@@goodlegosh986 you're right about their thoughts on the tremors pairing now - which is part of the reason our movies are not as good anymore lol
I wish I could find the 4K version of the Frighteners for a decent price.. Still one of my major "targets"!!!
@@sethm.woodiwiss786 it is a helluva release...Turbine may still have some
My 5 year old when he was 4 loved IT Chapter 1 and Five Nights at Freddy's, and I'm surprised I have like 18 of these movies, only exceptions is with Witches I have the remake imported from the UK and not the originals. And if Netflix and Disney was smart they would release Hubi Halloween and Hocus Pocus 2 on physical
@@DareDevil0504 those definitely need physical releases!
I definitely saw it when I was under 10 years old and it was terrifying
Does anyone remember the disney movies in the 80s Mr boogedy and bride of boogedy? Those were good for family friendly horror movies... another good one is little monsters with howie mandel and fred savage
@@dnad8034 I don't know if I have seen Mr Boogedy!
Arachnophobia - if you hate spiders. Keep the good work coming.
thank you!!!
Check out 1993’s animated “The Halloween Tree” with Bradbury narrating.
tha tis a good one for sure!! might make an appearance on my animated halloween list!
Great one. I read the book in middle school.
I'm kinda disappointed "A Serbian Film" didn't make this list. 😉
lol
In my opinion, the IT remake completely lacks the charm and chemistry of the original. In original you feel like you actually know the characters. Now the new Pennywise is scary as hell but Tim Curry was just spooky and morbidly funny. Love IT from 1990.
@@EddieBloecher I agree!

Lol
And how about we have a little authentic Bulgarian Meiak this morning? 🤣😂
Ernest Scared Stupid! 🥹❤️ I loved this movie so much as a kid.
I still love it too lol!! How bout a bumper sandwich booger lips?! hahaha
