Cinderella Man makes me tear up every time I watch it. One of the best films ever, and one of Crowe's best films. Crowe is a phenomenal actor. Love him in Gladiator but great as he was in the film, Cinderella is my favorite of Crowe's films. Jim Braddock is a good man with a golden heart. A quintessential family man. That scene where he went to fight starving because he saved the meager food for his children breaks my heart every time. Husbands and fathers like him have a special place in heaven. The Depression era tested people's mettle; it was a time when those made of lesser stuff turned into brutes and there were good men like Braddock.
Super good. But Gladiator is just on another level. I was blown away with that movie. Remember when they used to make good movies. Good times 🍿 & nachos
Years ago I went on the actual boat in San Diego, it was docked next to the Star of India and a German U boat, my family bought a pass to walk on all 3. They were all still floating/sailing. We were told on the Master/Commander boat that the one used in the movie was much bigger than the real thing we were on. Apparently the director didn't think people would believe such a small boat was so capable. Being much smaller it was able to out maneuver the much larger ships. And as I recall it was stated that many offending ship's cannons were useless at close quarters as the cannons sat above it's deck line.
Same… and it’s not a slight against Crowe he’s great! lol same with Keanu , Tom Cruise, R. Kelly, hell even Hillary Clinton I’ll still refer to as Hill-Dawg bc South Park portrayed it so hilariously!
That final fight with Max Baer was the greatest fight scene in the history of Hollywood fight scenes in any martial art ever. It was perfect. The shots, the music, the commentary, etc. on top of that, history teachers across the world use that movie to teach their students what the Great Depression was really like. 10/10 movie on every level. And of course…..Russell Crowe nailed it. Paul Giamatti also put on the performance of a lifetime.
I recently heard a story in an interview with the director of the Civil War movie Gettysburg. They were casting the movie and hadn't decided on who would play the part of Col. Chamberlain. They hadn't signed any big "name" actor to play the part yet like the producers wanted, so the director started holding open auditions just in case they didn't get a star to play the part. One of the young unknown actors that came in to audition was Russel Crow, who wasn't known in the US yet. He apparently nailed the audition. The director wanted to cast him in the part right then and there, but a producer wasn't having it. They kept searching for a few weeks and the director kept saying they should just hire the young Australian actor. The producer told him, "If you mention that Australian guy one more time, I'm pulling my funding, and the movie won't get made." The director dropped it, and they eventually cast Jeff Daniels. Now don't get me wrong Jeff Daniels was perfect in the role, and it's hard to imagine anyone else playing the part of Chamberlain. But I do wonder what Crowe would've been able to do with the role had he been given the chance.
After you lose both you're Parents you sometimes think of some great Film's you got to watch with them, time's you'll never forget. Russell Crow was in many of them. Thank You Russell for the great memories ill never forget.

@@sontewong9935 You really need to check out Russell in Romper Stomper, it’s one of his first movies, and shows how good an actor he was even in his early years. Very dark, very gritty, but brilliant.
The only thing I didn't like about Cinderella Man was when I found out how they character assassinated the antagonist, Max Baer, to "tell a better story." According to Baer's family, he was tortured by the deaths he caused, although others claimed he boasted about those victories. (One thing not in dispute is that, after killing Joseph Campbell in a 1930 match, Baer donated purses from his next several fights to the dead man's family.)
honestly the only thing they did wrong for Baer is when he tells Jimmy "people die in there"...other than that they say Baer talked a lot of smack on people and their wives out of fun just like in the movie and they even subtly showed he had a soft spot for Jimmy and didn't want him to get hurt
In the film it is the press and others that label Baer a killer and that's exactly what happened at the time. It's not showing you Max Baer from his families view, it's showing it from boxings point of view, the press and journalists are highlighted throughout the film for the stories they make up. The film never shows Baer bragging about being a killer.
you can be publicly boastful and privately tortured. especially as a boxer when being boastful is kind of part of the job for promoting fights, but yes i'm sure they leaned into the antagonistic aspect of baer. have to have a villain.
I *really* loved the way Crowe always said that about portraying real people. One of the greatest and inspirational movies of all time. I'd argue that the scenes outside of the ring are the best. The struggle of a family during the Great Depression was depicted perfectly, almost identical to stories told by my father who lived through it as a child. The shame that Braddock felt accepting government assistance, and what he felt as his obligation to pay it back is a perfect example of the greatest generation.
Yeah I’m kinda surprised. Finally that something that isn’t about politics or some niche topic like mushrooms 😂 My personal favorite episode is when he had TJ English with Joey Diaz
Just because other guests aren't as famous, doesn't mean they're not good guests. I even find that the most famous guests on JRE (Mel Gibson, Dwayne Johnson, ...) are also the most boring ones. They don't want to say anything slightly political incorrect and Joe prefers to be nice to them instead of go hard at them like Howard Stern used to do.

Russell Crowe, what a legend!!!
The world needs a Nice Guy's 2 now more then ever! The most underrated comedy of all time!
his voice is god level.
Cringe 😬
Crowe is a titan. Once in a generation
Masters and Commanders part 2 please
I just watched it a few days ago on the TH-cam free movies!
I should probably get around to reading that book series. I heard there were like 30 novels in the whole series and that Master and Commander was a mash-up of, like, the first 3 or something.
A Good Year one of my all time favourites. Just love the portrayal of the south of France and the warmth and the light. And Russell was the absolute tops. Him and the Jack Russell.
Gladiator is one of the movies I can watch any time
Back when we had cable that movie would be half way and I would sit and watch it along with
The terminator and titanic lol and most likely the lion king
I am a 90s kid still at heart
It's amazing to see a great actor mimic someone's accent so beautifully. Crowe's talent is undeniable
Fightin round the world!
The Nice Guys is in my top 5 favorite movies ever. I wish they would do a sequel so bad! They had great chemistry, it was a great story, I've seen it probably 40-50 times.
RUSSELL, PLEASE GET A SEQUEL GOING!!
Joe is completely star struck.... as he should be.
Could listen to Russell all day, he is an amazing story teller, grabs you attention
Master and Commander 🥇
Russell is such a terrific raconteur. Never mind his great acting, the guy really knows how to tell a story.
Warrior is a great MMA film.
Excellent interview. Enjoyed this one a great deal.
There’s been a few good MMA films. Karate kid, karate kid 2, karate kid 3, the next karate kid. And never back down
Wax on, wax off.
The Best of The Best, is in fact exactly that. If you've never seen it, Great fighting scenes
@@Llerrah508 warrior is probably my favorite mma movie, with Tom Hardy
@@Llerrah508 one of my favorite movies of all time.
Best of the Best!! Good form
No retreat no surrender!
When you're a father and watched Cinderella Man.. it just hit you even more!
It's always funny to see Joe a little star struck.
Máster and commander best movie hands down no discussion!! And 3:10 to Yuma that’s one hell of a western
Russell Crowe is a great actor. Top tier
Come on tugger we're fighting around the world!!!!
❤
Hopefully this Interview will get this movie the recognition it deserves!
An actually good guest on JRE? IMPOSSIBLE!!
I know right, I avoid all the comedians, most are probably talented and cool people, but not my crowd.
Joe talks so much shit about actors but a lot of them are his best guest.
The worst are the other comedians, endless bullshit about “the craft” and how “hard they grinded”
love this man!
"I have no desire to rule Rome."
-that is why it must be you
*anyone who seeks a position of power will surely abuse it. Judges, politicians, law enforcement, ect.
Gladiator is such a great movie
Damn, such a great conversation about stuff I like to know about. Thanks, JRE. Gotta go watch the whole podcast now.
How ironic he just had Dennis Quaid on lol is Meg Ryan next?
I remember how I went into this movie without very much expectations from it but man I left that theater reeling from how much I enjoyed it and felt inspired by it. I'm totally going to have to watch it again soon now.
The biggest compliment you can give any movie is that you can watch it 10 times and still love it.. this is definitely one of those movies a great Ron Howard directed movie.
