My conversation with the brilliant Dr. Anthony Daniels, aka Theodore Dalrymple.
In this segment: Is prison really the university of crime, the low rates of detection of crime, are innocent people being corrupted by the presence of other criminals in prison, what is the fundamental role of the state, most criminals come from a poor background but the same is true of their victims, failure to incapacitate those who commit crimes is creating more victims, the number of people who are in prison for a first offence is very small, people in prison are not committing crimes against people on the outside, hundreds of thousands of crimes are committed by people on probation, a small proportion of the population is committing the majority of crime, the notorious case of Shane Jenkin, sentences have to be proportionate to the seriousness of the crime, if you give a monster like Shane Jenkins a six year sentence, what do you give a burglar?, the average burglary draws a sentence to itself of three days in prison, we don't want a society in which people behave well only because there's a policeman round the corner.

Once again erudite and witty. I visited lots of people in the prison he worked in, including my father, and when he talks of the things they say he is absolutely spot on. There is a mindset they display which is at odds with the world. Thanks for sharing these.

I live in Sofia and I'm from Airdrie, Scotland. Wonderful to see my favourite fellow British thinker interviewed by an impressive young Bulgarian. Lovely!

8:00 If prisoners need longer sentences because they can't be fixed then why are we keeping them in prison? Just so Dr. Daniels can learn from them? What about capital punishment? I'd promptly volunteer to pull the hangman's lever for Mr. Eye Gouger. At least one woman REALLY doesn't need him to exist and we should make that decision to benefit her kids since she won't.
