“A pint of beer costs £2.15” “that’s quite a lot” ohhh what I’d do to pay that for a pint now 😂

Was lower than average even then. The average price of a pint has only gone up 50P in the last decade.
You can still get a pint for £2 in a Wetherspoons.

We have similar things to this in Australia, Here we have 2 dollar shops where everything is super cheap. (No DVD section though.) And we do have arcade machines with the coins and cliffs where they might push off some, but instead of coins their tokens you can hand in to earn prizes. (Kinda cool how England has similar things.)

I remember being on holiday with my mates and decided to stick a quids worth of 10p's in, won 60 quid lol. A guy had to come and put more money in the machine afterwards. Brilliant thing to happen while on holiday as I didn't have much left at that point

We have dollar stores in the U.S., but they're stupid- stuff sells for up to about $10 in there. At least in my area. Like, call it a 10 dollar or less shop! Not a dollar store! Guess it doesn't have the same ring to it.

A failed dollar store in our city was called "Nothing Under $1". At first I thought it was a typo and they meant over, but no. Mind you it was a giant "$1" with "Nothing under" in tiny type above it.
I always liked that Simpsons joke about 99 cent stores, where they're in 1905 and the local 99 cent store is selling grand pianos and chandeliers.

I don't know how old these are, but it doesn't really matter, because we've always had dollar stores and 99cent stores in the US. Never in my life have I heard of dime stores.

    • @WildBluntHickok

I've heard "dime store" as a turn of phrase. I think in detective novels they'd use it as a phrase for low quality things. Like "don't try to talk me into it with those dime-store arguments". I could see 1930s dollar stores being dime stores instead.
