- It's the time of year for travelling again and this time I have headed to East Africa for an adventure in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. In this first video I will be exploring the swahili coast of Kenya, a strip of white sand, beautiful sailing boats and fascinating culture.
My trip started in Diani Beach, visiting a school friend who has lived there for a few years for a week of white sand, fishing and exploring the local sacred forest. I also met quite a number of the expat community there and learnt a little about Kenya before I started heading north.
My next stop was the city of Mombasa, a stop for the day on my was to Kilifi. I took a Manatu up to the Likoni ferry which crosses to Mombasa island and this was quite and experience with huge numbers of people crossing. In Mombasa itself I visiting the atmospheric Fort Jesus, originally built by the Portuguese and later by the Omani arabs and started my journey into the history of the region.
Continuing north I took a Manatu to Kilifi, a small town on the mouth of a beautiful creek. Here I saw some amazing ruins, ate great seafood, looked at lots of boats and had a few nice beers. The hostel I stayed at, Distant Relatives was also a wonderful haven with a pool and wonderful atmosphere.
My final stop was Lamu, reached first by coach and then speedboat through the mangroves. Lamu is the oldest constantly inhabited town in Kenya and was a fascinating mix of African and Arabic culture, all in a beautiful marine setting. This coast has always depended on the sea and it was fascinating to learn the history of this and see the beautiful dhows and other craft plying their trade.
Watch the video to see what the beautiful Kenyan coast has to offer and next stop is the highlands of Kenya.
