@@paulasfigureskating5612 Technically with 5 clean triples, two in combination and two gorgeous double axels, this was better than the top 5, including John Curry who landed 3 triples to Robin's 5. As for style and artistry this was better than Kovalev and Hoffmann, although not yet quite up to the standard of Curry or Cranston but Robin already had that lovely flow and that beautiful statuesque carriage. Certainly should have been in the top 5 in the free skate.
No not a British thing more European but you have to remember that Gladys Hogg and Eileen Anderson had practically reared Robin through his early skating years. This was just an act of affection nothing more.
Thank you so much, floskate. I had read about Robin's skate here but never seen it. What amazing line, effortless ease of movement and lightness in the jumps, like he was floating. Incredibly mature style for an 18-year-old. Music: Tres Ratones Ciegos (Stanley Black and his Orchestra)
This was back in the day when the skating actually went with the music, and skaters skated with flare and style. A single Axel could almost be as affective as a triple when done with height and flare.
And now skating doesn't go with music? Well, that's news. Have you actually watched any skating recently? As for single Axels - sorry, but Hanyu's are more spectacular. Don't get me wrong, this skater is great, but there is no need to hate current day athletes.
No one is hating the young athletes of today but Robin was a superb technician and like Hanyu Yuzuru had enormous height in his jumps. His open axel remains one of the highest ever recorded. You can’t compare the two different generations though. Skating was a very different sport then to what is has become.
@@andrewthompson7526 "No one is hating" - are you sure? Because to me the sentence "back in the day ... skaters skated with flare and style" is exactly that: hating the present day skaters. It's the first commentator that compared past athletes with what we see now. I am strongly against such comparisons, therefore I had to react.
Wow! Thank you yet again! I had never seen that - I was 4 during the Winter Olympics in 1976 - that was quite something! Quite frankly goodness knows what the judges were watching but not the same thing I watched! Dreadful marks!
Poor Robin. 14th in figures and 11th in the short program. Guessing a fall or a missed element? Did move up to 8th in the FS though. Who would have came in 3rd if you pull school figures out of the mix?
All in whole symbiosis with music!!! He, her National captain John Curry, Toller Cranston what a poetry! And also Jane & Christopher. Such an out standing Age! In recent times only Yuzuru, Tessa & Scott, Gabriela & Guillaume came up to such a whole union of art, skills and lightness.
Thanks for posting. Technically this was better than his winning performance in 1980, at least in terms of jump content. But artistically he was so much better in 1980 and a better spinner too by then probably
Do you know if there is any footage of any quadruple jump attempts before 1984? For example, I've heard that Robert Wagenhoffer could do them in practice (I think I've heard that he's tried quad toe and quad loop) but I have never been able to find any footage of any quads before 1984. edit: I've also read a quote from donald jackson that says he's tried for quad salchows before, it would be really interesting if there was any footage
I don't think there are any such clips of anyone doing a quad before 1984 on YT. There is of course footage of David Jenkins, World Champion 1957 to 1960 and 1960 Olympic Champion doing a triple axel as early as 1957. It's here: th-cam.com/video/w2unFSmlNjI/w-d-xo.html
@npe1 yeah, I've seen the david jenkins clip before, he was an awesome skater. that's a bit of a shame on the quad jumps, a lot of history that would be awesome to see film of
Outstanding free skate. I can only assume that he was overshadowed by John Curry and the judges weren't going to give great marks to two British skaters. The markings were very low.
THANK you for posting gladys hogg was a lovely coach however i must say the music and program were dreadful i think he was much improved artistically with the move to carlo the following year! :)
Being older helps. Robin was 18 here? You can buckle down and learn all the fine tuning with a couple years under your belt. The music is a total woof. I think the only skater that could pull it off is Toller. Also seeing Robin in such muted colors is different. Maybe it's the film?
brilliant performance often over looked...magnificent. well done lad...remember it well xxxx
Как интересно! Прошлый век, и нет этих умопомрачительных прыжков, а получаешь такое удовольствие, здорово!!!!
What an absolute gem from the archives floskate. It has that unmistakable "Robin flow" - so smooth, so liquid and 5 triples. So undermarked.
I so agree!

@@npe1that 5.4 is a trash mark.
I guess they dropped him because he skated "young", but he should have been in the top 5.
@@npe1 Once again, I so agree!
Happy 44th Anniversary Robin on winning Olympic Gold in Lake Placid. I stayed up late to watch on TV and cheer you on! 🇬🇧🤎❤💙
So young!!!!! What a cutie he was!
Thank you for posting because this has made my day.
Lovely to see Gladys Hogg and Eileen Anderson with Robin. Great memories
Thankfully, 4 years later Eileen was there with him in Lake Placid to see him win gold in 1980.
I'm so sorry but I have to know, why did they kiss on the lips??!!
Is it a British thing??

Even as a "baby skater", Robin was glorious. Love this is posted.
That was wonderful.
Скорость, легкость, пластичность, элегантность и благородство!
Завораживает!🌹🌹🌹

yes true however this music choice was dreadful noise he choose music later that was lovely
Skating was made to look effortless then. Now it’s ragged and all that matters are quads.

I forgot that he competed in 76 as well it was a great skate
Loved his Choreography later on for Denise Biellman 👑
Как интересно ,необычно.Очень красиво и легко .Катание очень изящное и в то же время мужское.

Superb! I was always glued to the telly for John Curry, Robin Cousins and any gymnastics in the late 70’s/80’s . Enjoying your feed 🙂🙏
Прекрасное катание для 76 года. Сейчас фигурист уже старенький.

How did you find this! Omg
Thank you for this! I don't remember seeing this before! Incredible... nine blind judges is accurate... geez
I loved his routine! Especially all of the little jumps across the ice😊
Какое мягкое скольжение и прыжки ! Очень выразителен и элегантен
So under marked indeed!

Un gran ejemplo de patinaje en primera línea.

Better than a lot of music choices today which seem to be picked so that they need no ‘interpretation’ 😜
