- Sathya presents a detailed demonstration and explains the usage and ideal settings for Pitch bender, portamento, velocity and legato features on a keyboard. These are very important aspects to produce the nuances of Carnatic Music.
It was presented as a part of the Lecture Demonstration titled - KEYBOARD The Trendsetter in Indian Classical Music at the National Conference for Tamil Nadu Music And Fine Arts University & South Zone Cultural Centre, Thanjavur.
The event was held on 20 January 2016 at the Music College, Chennai.

Wonderful presentation, Mr.Sathya. I always thought that it was very difficult to render "gamakas" on the keyboard but thanks to your video you've made Carnatic music easy to play on the keyboard.

This is a very useful video......I started learning western piano 6 months ago by watching videos online, I wanted to learn carnatic too, but did'nt know how to get Gamakas & all, i know about Pitch bender, but didn't know anything about Portamento, Legato setting, I searched in my Casio CTX keyboard manual pdf, typed the words.....I think my keyboard has these Portamento & Velocity settings, could'nt find the word Legato, but i'm gonna read the manual & figure it out.......thanks for this demo....... by the way, can you tell me which "Tone" you use generally for Carnatic on your keyboard, it doesn't seem like Violin, Is it E.Piano or which one ??

Oh...Jazz Guitar okay I'll try it, thanks for replying.....Can u tell me one more thing, while learning Carnatic singing, everyone starts with learning Sarali varisai, Janta varisai, Dhatu, other varisai and all talas & geethams right...Is it the same way u practice on Keyboard ? Ofcourse regarding building technique, I'm practicing Scales & Arpeggios & some other exercises, but I just wanted to know how to get started playing Carnatic...?
@@manohardixit5866 yup the ideal way of doing is that. Bt the fingering techniques matter.. random stuff wont take yhe learner far ..
In my music school.. we have proper methodology we initiate the learners .. from day 1 .. thats wat i have tried and tested through my journey 😀
@@keyboardsathya Okay, i get it, you were playing so many years figuring out what's the best method......i saw in another video, you said most players are using 12341234 for carnatic but we should use 12312345 for proper fingering like for western music.....Ok then, your music school is in Chennai right ? is it available online ? if yes tell me i'll look into it......Thank you Sathya...

Buddy.. go through your manual .. or search it online.. it should come in one of the edit screens.. in korg it comes on the edit menus.. nd vsts, its more with what sound u like to play.. i hv played on guitar tone

Legato, pitch bender பற்றி புரிந்துகொள்ளும்படியான விளக்கம். Portamento என்ன என்பது விளங்கினாலும் எப்படி என்பது புரிந்துகொள்ள முடியவில்லை. முயற்சிப்போம்.

pls note midi keyboards are just facilitator to use the software in a computer.
portamento is a inbuilt option in any professional keyboards like Yamaha, Roland and Korg.
thanks for the prompt response....I want to use an arranger with portamento.. I did search all the Web but could not find one. will be more glad if you could specify a specific model
i use korg micro x, korg microstation, korg TR 64, Korg X50 and all these models have this facility being synthesizer / workstation. I am sure the high end models of Casio, Yamaha and Roland also has this. The advanced version of playing Carnatic probably is ROLI Seaboard.
As far as arrangers please check with Korg as i have not much exposure on this.

Closest to that sound is jazz guitar/octave guitar..
U wont have this exact sound in yamaha.. becoz its a different company keyboard.. i have used korg in this video
