Thanks for Sharing Who You Are....Love Hearing The Great Voicings.... After a Life Time of Playing ,We are all Still Learning....Playing by Ear and Most by Heart is Always the way to Fall in Love with Our Guitars.... GRACE !!!!
Doesn't matter if she's had formal training or self-taught who plays by ear - she's all about taste and feel. You need that above all else in the arts. Interesting video, keep 'em coming Joyce!
Yeah just real simple chords where we can find something special and loving that has some real feelings and meanings from a real artist with a simple kind of love
Hi Joyce and greetings from Sydney, Down Under, My jazz collection includes all your amazing works from Cameo to Living Out Loud. In my collection, I have works by many amazing jazz guitarists, you would know them all, for sure, but for me you're number one. I was wondering whether it would be possible for you to share with your fans how do you go about composing amazing melodies such as for example Tamba or At the Modern or Marina's Dream or How Was I to Know? I could go on forever, any song will do. I am fascinated to learn where your amazing talent come from? How do you do it?
As a percussionist in Bay Area, Expression is a # 1 favorite arrangement, jamming on my cajon to that great tune is my favorite thing to do, oh its speaking to me, you are awesome ! 🎸🥁 👏
So kind, so generous, so beautiful. Just what I needed on this gray Monday morning. Stay well, stay beautiful, live in ecstasy. Got to see you and Jay at the Cotati Jazz Festival a few years ago. Those were fun days! Thanks again.
Joyce, I am an admirer of your beauty and radiance as a person and as a compose/musician/guitarist. The first time I heard your music I was and still am swooned over with your melodies, harmony, and rhythmic patterns. And now with some lessons, it has opened up some voicings for me on the piano. You may say you are not a teacher, in the way a teacher may be though of, but you have just taught and offered other musicians like myself an insight into your playing. Thank you for this video. Just completely incredible spiritually fit music. You are amazing. I will forever be a fan of yours.
Sister Joyce.... We would all Love to hear more of this.... We All Need to hear that it is possible to move in to the public Eye by playing by Ear....To hear and learn Chords and Voicings that you have found in the exploration of the 12 Notes...
Wow...never thought I'd see a guitar lesson from you Joyce. Awesome! Your new guitar is sweet. The string winding spaghetti at the headstock was tweaking my guitarist OCD though lol. Thanks, would love to see more. I've loved your playing for decades!
I know, Rick. Me too. The goofy guitar string spaghetti bugs me too - ha!. When I picked the guitar up from the luthier they were that way. I left them for three reasons: 1. trying to "cure" my guitarist OCD and get used to gnarly string ends - 2. I don't like new guitar strings - especially acoustic - they stretch and get out of tune, etc - 3. sheer laziness. So, you nailed me - haha! Thanks for writing in!
I love you and your music, Joyce. I've been a huge fan of yours, since the 90's. I play your music at work, all the time. I would love to see you in concert -- hopefully, in the near future. I really like these tutorial videos. Perhaps, I will buy a guitar and study them so I can play as a hobby? ;)
OMG! The absolute Queen of jazz guitar got a channel! like a dream come true! Thank you for doing this! I'm an hardcore fan of your music (and my little 1 yo daughter too), please keep uploading this videos! much love from Chile!.
MARINA'S DREAM. THE LATEST MASTERPIECE. I really like Joyce Cooling and Jay Wagner. Speaking of this video, I would like to make an observation. In my experience and opinion, I believe that a succession, from the simplest to the most complex, of pieces containing the teacher chords, would be very useful. The human brain can build the rules internally starting from the observation of concrete situations. If she wrote these educational songs, even the simplest ones, many of her fans would be happy. She is gifted with great, cheerful, intelligent and charming creativity, Thank you Joyce
Hi Bernard - Honored to be mentioned with Dori Caymmi - one of my heroes! I watched an interview with him where he demonstrated some of his chords. Dori is way into alternate guitar tunings and that's how he gets some of those absolutely gorgeous chords of his. He is a master's master for sure! Nice to hear from you and stay safe & healthy!
I swear, if you had said 'happy accident' somewhere it would have been a great Bob Ross impression! Thanks for the chords, I just found this video nearly a year late, but I'm subscribed.
Wow…a nice surprise to see some pearls from Joyce. I especially like these insights, hope more are coming…with the pandemic, we’re all so isolated and these gems are a real treat.
Hi Joyce! Sitting here playing my guitar and found your video...oh my what a wonderful surprise! Great to see you live on TH-cam with some very inspirational cord voicings. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your talent with all of us who love guitar. Still love and enjoy all of your music...since I first saw you play in San Francisco at Pasand's. Looking forward to your next lesson and hopefully, seeing you in concert again in the future 😊- Thank you!! Charles Thompson 87-90' San Francisco
Hi Joyce, Great stuff ! I look forward to more videos. I play some of your songs on my gigs. "Callie" and "Come and Get it" are crowd favorites. I love your playing, it's very tasteful.
Would be a ball! Who knows if things will ever get back to where they were regarding live shows? What a strange new world this is! I would love to see you and your wife in Reno. - thanks!
“I’m not a teacher...” You are an absolutely fantastic guitar player and songwriter. Just heard, “Revolving Door” on Spotify. Love it! I really enjoy your warm, soulful runs. Love the sound of the voicings too. Adding to my library!
I have been waiting for her to arise again. I've been a fan for over a decade nearly two. I love the chords, tunes, music all of it. Welcome back. I can't wait for you to do "Blues Alley" or "Birchmere" better yet, The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. if you come I'll be there.
When I was a boy, I didn't study guitar but I liked to randomly search for chords. The ones I liked, remind me of the first three chords of the movie. But I like all the cords of this video. Every Joyce movie I like, I watch it many times. Before seeing this video, I thought I didn't like major chords but later, I realized that maybe that is not true
Thanks Joyce! Love these new chord voicings segments. I play piano but have been thinking about taking up the guitar! 🎸 hope you and Jay are staying well!
I'm not a guitarist but these chords are gorgeous, as with all your music. Just discovered you and I've been listening to your whole discography- thanks for the amazing music Joyce!! Looking forward to more videos.
Absolutely delighted to hear what you're creating these days. Used to catch you with your trio in Tiburon. When will you release a CD solo acoustic/voice? Thank you.
Hi Jeffery! Nice to hear from you. Whoa - trio in Tiburon - that's going back there!! Thanks for remembering me :-) Funny you should ask about the acoustic thing - I've been working on a song...
Coolings sounds are soothing with some real simple chords & words where we can find something special & beautiful that have some real fealings & meanings for us from a real kind of artist with a simple kind of love
I love this!! Please keep doing these videos. Love to see how you create chords. Love that classical guitar sound! 😍 By the way I've been a fan of your music for over a decade! What Are We Waiting for? My favorite song! Went to see you play live in Overland Park KS about 10ish years ago when Global Cooling came out. Still have the CD you autographed for me.
Thanks so much for the kind words Alvee! Thanks also for taking time to let me know your thoughts. I remember the KS gig - so fun in a beautiful, open outdoor setting. A third thanks for coming to hear us, for listening, and for watching! :-)
I like this, cool easy tips from you, now I can't wait to get my guitar out and practice. I enjoy your guitar sounds, that new instrument is smooth. Thanks, give us more when you can...
All I needed to see was the Airplane take off in At The Modern and I was hooked! What a fab idea for a background! Up to 3 CD's now and gonna buy more soon. Joyce, I have heard bits and pieces of your voice and I don't understand why you don't sing more??
Wow, just found this...how cool to hear your thinking behind these chords, such as those E major examples were just DRIPPING Revolving Door material....got goosebumps just recognizing those passages....anything you care do to do works for me J.....thanks!
I also love the discovery of new chord fingerings, especially when something new fits perfectly into a new song I might be working on. I'm going to try your discoveries on my 12-string. PS: I saw you perform at the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley CA a few years back and just loved your music!
Hey Joyce, I do like these videos! Maybe break down some of chord progressions from your songs too, that'd be great - I love learning your songs but sometimes its difficult to hear guitar chords in a mix for this type of music (getting the exact voicing the artist used) so that would be very helpful!
Hi Joyce! Great music you make. I remember listening to your music since the days of 103.7 KKSF radio station and from the Sampler Aids Relief CDs. Here is an idea for more guitar type tutorials: tell us how and what methods/ways you use or have used to teach yourself how to play guitar by ear. I know a lot of people out there would love to play guitar but might not have the opportunity to go through formal training. How did you teach yourself to play guitar by ear? I am very fascinated by it and would love any tips, tutorials, ways that enabled you to develop such a high level of guitar playing. Even insights into ways you go about writing songs would be great. I don't think people appreciate it, but writing good and smooth instrumental music is NOT an easy thing to do. The human voice can emote in ways that can make an average song sound good. An instrumental music must be very catchy and have that "flow" or "vibe". If it does not, the audience will stop listening at the drop of a hat. Joyce, keep writing your instrumental music. Your music and the music of other instrumental composer/musicians like you carry on the spirit that once filled the airwaves of radio stations like 103.7 KKSF. I miss that radio station very much and the music and sound that came from that very radio station. Your music lets me reminisce about those good days and all good things to come.
Joyce - I love your music & playing and really appreciate that you took the time to do this! Here's one for you to try, one of my favorite chords - works great as an ending - play open low E, barre across all other strings at the 11th fret, with the B note at the 12th fret - Emaj7 9/6. Thanks and looking forward to more of your posts. Stay well!
And to answer your question - yes, I love this and would love to see more, we can always take away something new that we may have never thought about before. Thanks for sharing!
Just listening to Marina's Dream - really tasteful playing. I love the grooves you and Jay get into, they make me feel good. I love your playing, it's always right in the pocket.
I have enjoyed your playing since "This Girl's Got to Play." Have you ever played a Godin Multiac Slim guitar? It's listed as a Godin ACS-SA Nylon Natural. I played steel string acoustics for years and then quit playing altogether for about 15 years. When I returned to playing, I came across this guitar and it was "instrumental" (sorry) in getting me back up to speed and opened up a more mature style of playing for me. I think you would enjoy playing this guitar.
I like these and love to send your approaches to riffs. I am learning how and when to apply the Phrygian Dom or Harmonic Minor in the 2/5/1. Do you use that scale ? Sounds cool. Love to hear back. Barry. Scottsdale.
Hi Barry - It sounds like you are more advanced than I am, but I totally hear you! I do know and use 2-5-1 progressions and that's a great idea about sharing some melodic lines to go over them. I will look up Phrygian Dom now. I know there are so many cool modes out there. I have to put the names with the sounds. Thanks for the tip!
Joyce Cooling I am a converted pianist and study with a 40 year jazz veteran forces you to use things and tensions you normally don’t use. In the song Black Orpheus (carnival) in A- Look for 2/5/1.
