      @magiccheeseball 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Zack Smith oh I thought you ment because he was too tall or something but he is only about 6ft. It's not that hard to drive the clutch and steering is no harder than any car with no power steering if anything it is easier than bigger cars and he used it as a daily driver so that speaks for itself

    • @magiccheeseball
      @magiccheeseball 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Zack Smith I'm sure he means hard relative to an average car not like you need super strength it's harder than average but I'm sure no defrent than any simular older car. I drove many cars like that back in the day they are a bit of pain when driving slow and parking buts it's no big deal, it would be now that I'm an old fart though haha

    I try to drive mine every two weeks and yes it’s true, the more you drive them the better they get.
    And kind of funny that the ones that don’t get driven are rewarded with a higher price when they’re sold to the next person who just lets it sit in the garage again.

    You are right. I have nearly 30 years experience with Ferrari. You need to use the car regularly. It’s made for driving,not for standing in the garage. But you need to put your eye on some simple things. Always start the car up and drive until the oil is at least 70 degrees Celsius warm. Then you can push the throttle as much as you can. The car will like it. When you want to stop the car, slow down and strive the last miles in a normal speed to cool down. Your car will say thanks.

    • @normalguysupercar
      @normalguysupercar  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup exactly! But that honestly goes for almost all cars. Granted modern cars with modern synthetic oils are more resilient to that sort of stuff, but it's still a simple step to save a lot of wear.

    When I bought my first Ducati (also Italian hand made) in 1978, my riding buddies told that I would never be able to go for rides because my bike would always be broken down. LOL What happened is that I never had any kind of failure on that bike. It turned out to be extremely reliable, and fast. It has started every time I hit the starter button, and has taken me home regardless of how far I was from home. And it's sitting in my garage right now, still looking like new...

      Was a good car but a bit boring as a slow fwd car. But it never let me down

    Hi Dan, I totally agree with your analysis. I am in Hong Kong and I bought my 2013 one previous owner 458 spider in 2017 with 7,450 km on the odometer. I drive the car regularly and for long distances. It has now covered 25,000 km. The only problem I had on this car are oil seepage from the cam covers and the gaskets have been replaced in 2022. Thanks to your very informative video I advised my mechanic that this does not have to be an engine out operation and can be done with the engine in situ. Have to be very careful when refitting the high pressure fuel pumps. Of all the 458s I have seen in HK, all have this oil seepage problem from the cam cover gaskets. If you go back to the official dealer they will tell you that its an engine out job. The other minor problem is a broken steering linkage bellow this year. Can't really complaint about this happening after 10 years. Another problem is the carbon built up in the intake valves but this is caused by wall guided direct injection and blow back at idling speed. This is NOT a Ferrari problem but affects all direct injection engines. This has been fixed by my mechanic with walnut shell blasting. The other night there was a traffic accident and I was in the 458 and got stuck in the HK Cross Harbour Tunnel for an hour. Temperature gauge went up to just over 100 but not above. I have replaced the headers with iPE equal length with heatshield protection. The heat shield really helped with the temperature in the engine compartment. Once I got out of the tunnel the temperature come down swiftly. In June I was out of town for 3 weeks and when I got back the 458 started without any problem. I did not have to put a battery tender on it before trying to start the car. I can say from my own experience that if you drive your car regularly the 458 is a very reliable car.

    My last Ferrari never had any major drivetrain issue. Almost all my issues were how subpar the interior was from gummy surfaces to broken window switches. Since then I have a Bentley Flying Spur as my daily driver and it’s been my favorite car ever, all the acceleration of a sports car and huge comfort of a huge luxury car, it’s been six years and no repairs other than wear and tear items. My Ferrari was a 360, so every point video is dead on about needing to let fluids heat up often to avoid issue to burn off water and impurities.

    I have a 1941 Ford GPW Jeep. On the inside there is a original label on hat said to "start and drive the vehicle every 21 days" even back then it was known to use and move the vehicle. When I had my 64 1/2 Mustang I never drove it in the winter but every month I took it out for several miles to " move the fluids"

    • @normalguysupercar
      @normalguysupercar  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's really fascinating about the Jeep. I would be it was even more so a problem on cars from that era as the lubricants weren't as good, and the gaskets were problem much lower grade than some of the impressive engineering they can accomplish now.

    U missed the most important fact is that the more complex a car is engineered and built, the easier it is to break, in other words ppl call it "unreliable" but we know its not really the case, just compare how many parts used and the level of technology and craftmanship required for building a Farrari and a Honda civic, then u know the answer, also Toyota camery deliberately used less parts and low tech to enhance "reliabilty", so there is always a reason behind it, also Toyota is designed to last years for those low income ppl so they can afford it, but thats not the purpose for building a Farrari right? Jesus, some ppl just doesnt use their brain to think!

    Ferrari cars sit because owners want to avoid breakdowns and the ridiculous costs to fix them. Some people keep milage low and sell the low milage car for a profit 2 years later or dump the car once the warranty expires. People that have aquired wealth and able to buy a Ferrari are not in the habit of making bad money decisions.

Fuel pump replacement after 14 years which is normal and cost pretty much the same as a Vw Golf, front disc rotor is 175 euro including VAT and small electrical type problems that cost next to nothing to be resolved. I have owned a 308 512bb and F430 and the reliability of these cars has been as good as the 7 Porsches I have owned.What is different is the routine maintenance required for the cars.My mechanic and myself are probably still the only ones to do the cam belts on a 512bb without taking the engine out.As time goes by we may start seeing more electrical problems with the newer cars.Try 205 Re Seal for rubber life extension per Scotty Kilmers rec.Have used this and so far it has worked.My 1970 Datsun 240Z still runs fine but needs hoses now. Fuel pump and convertible top seals have worn of the F430.Routine maintenance will always be an issue and older Ferraris will always need more than most cars but as a comparison my 1981 930 Turbo needed an engine rebuild after 40,000 mi Congrats on your increase in subs1

    The Miata is a perfect example of cars that sit and don’t get driven much. There are many 20-30 year old Miatas with under 100K miles, some even under 50K, because for most people they’re just weekend fun/toy/track cars. And so these older cars with fairly low miles sell for cheap because they have a lot of problems despite the low miles.

    Both of my Porsche 928's were extremely reliable mechanically. I drove my first one to 144,000 miles in the early 1990's with only ONE issue, an oil cooler line let go. My 2nd 928 had no mechanical issues, and I sold it off in 2004 at 120,000 miles. Both had their share of electrical issues. Those issues are what done them in for me despite how incredible they were to drive. I bought and lightly modified a GTO. 13 years later I still have it, no issues other than the "normal" issues. These cars need to be driven.

He had a few hairy moments in it but the one I recall was how the wheels started to spin in 4th gear down the back straight at Riverside. Granted the track was damp... I agree with you for the most part. People should not compare a high performance vehicles to a mass produced vehicle. But Japanese manufacturers do mass produce engines of high output with respect to 100 hp/liter. Also things like sticky switches, droopy headliners, leather that falls apart, window regulators and door handle failures have nothing to do with performance but more with better choice of materials etc, and for such an expensive vehicle like a Ferrari, they really should not really skimp when cheaper mass produced cars do not have the same types of issues. I don't own an exotic car but my old motorcycle, a 1993 Kawasaki Ninja ZX7 which I ride only a few times a year does so reliably and does not fall apart from sitting. The right materials can last a very long time.

    Anything sold by the gram will always be more exciting than stuff sold by the pound. Same applies with reliability.
    Mass manufacturing cures a lot of those issues however as you’ve alluded to use it or lose it! Cars prepared by racing teams are a totally different. I know I’ve raced in the Lotus trophy and everything gets cross checked but issues still arise. Those are Toyota engined cars thou. If I get another Ferrari I will use it as you do!

I did all the maintenance on it already accept brake pads. Does not yet need them yet. I've had it for over two years now, and have had only 1 problem. This is spot on. Especially for older cars regardless of make/model. Certain cars (weather dependent) I make a point to drive and warm up to temperature once a week. Others I can get by only taking them out once a month (newer cars). You do get a break with mid engine cars in regard to suspension and bushing wear due to weight distribution while sitting. Good video.

    This talk of unreliable is history of the past, my 458 is over 70000km and my 430 is almost 100000km and never had a problem, I have friends that cars much longer than mine! The problem is people who never use cars, these cars have problems! And I use my 458 since the day I bought almost every day and always keep the maintenance in the correct period! People want to let cars use a few times a year, and then they want cars to run 100%! My friend instagram.com/cardoso.collector/ even uses his LaFerrari constantly, if I'm not mistaken it already has over 45000km!

      'Atta boy! Yes, use is one of the single largest factors with respect to reliability. Even some of the older "unreliable" Ferraris are far more reliable if they just get driven more. Sitting around just dry rots all the gaskets and seals, then you end up with all sorts of fun problems.

    I just happen to be a Corvette owner who also loves Ferraris. So far, nearly 8 years and nearly 80Kmi and no mechanical/electrical engine issues. But, like said in this video, I drive mine. And, I've also tracked it. I do drive it as often as possible. Like today, it sat for a week with the tender. Today was a beautiful day (it's December) and I took it out for a nice hour or so drive. I always warm it up and drive gently, then just normal driving before really goosing it. I knew someone with a new 308 and they stored it on stands for 10 years. The car needed over $10K of service, mostly because it'd never been driven. Same thing probably would've happened to the Vette under similar circumstances. It's REALLY important to drive these cars as often as possible. Using them as an 'investment' platform is NOT the smart thing to do, imo. And the proper break-in is also crucially important. Don't do it as per factory recommendations, just burn rubber out of the new dealer lot with too low mileage, and possibly have an oil consuming problem child for the rest of the car's life.

    Couldn't agree with you more. I've had people ask me at fuel stations if I was insane for driving the GTC4Lusso in light snow or as my semi-daily driver. I've had to tell them " it's AWD, it's got snow tyres on it , heat & heated seats, and 690 horses under the hood.. Obviously it can handle it " I've had sales reps ask me to drop them off at their BMW dealer because their 3 or 5 series broke down, was leaking something .... my response " oh so you need me to drive you , in my so called unreliable Ferrari to your BMW aka Bring Money With dealer to pick up the car that has the so called ultimate service for the ultimate high maintenance machine because it was leaking or broken again huh? " .... look on their face is usually priceless. 2017 GTC4Lusso , serviced every 10K miles oil changes, software updates, twice a year I have a 4-wheel alignment done ( because of the 4-wheel steering system) and while it's in for 1 of those alignments, I also order ( not Racambi because Scudria parts has been less expensive on many parts with free shipping sorry.....) and I change the air, pollen filters. I also swapped out the front and rear brake pads ( 55K miles were on them and down to 1/3 pad left so peace of mind I swapped them out) , I've put 2 set of summer tyres on it so far and just ordered my 2nd set of winter tyres. ( live in New Hampshire). Month ago I noticed it wasn't getting it's usual 24-26mpg ( if I kept it under 75mph) , I was getting 16-18. I took it in to the dealer, they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I took it to a independent, Ferrari, Lambo, Bentley, guy I found on the Ferrari chat forums, he pulled the plugs and 5 of the 12 weren't firing correctly so he suggested new plugs, fuel filter, and a ECU reset. All better now.. :-) Now mind you .... This car has radar and laser jamers installed, and when I'm on the highway, 80% of the time I'm usually in the 75-100+mph range . I have as of last night 66,290 miles on my 2017 , which I drove off the lot with 62 miles on it brand new 10/18/2017. It's far from a garage queen. I have sales reps & friends that have witnessed me driving from our Bedford NH office to Midtown Manhattan ( 254 miles) in 3.5 hours flat . I've had Range Rovers and people attempting to have the same conversation about those and I'm on my 7th , I keep them for 3yrs or 150K miles and my master tech at my local dealer told me years ago " drive it like you stole it and you won't have problems, exercise it every time you get in it " which I do he's called me on weekends asking if I was going to a fire or something because I've passed him somewhere, " at mach 2 speed" , and he's bought a few of my traded in vehicles because he knew how I drove it and took care of it. I love the conversations of " oh XXX brand got a JD power award *** cough cough Chevy, GMC, Buick, *** yeah jackass, news flash ignorant fool, JD power is a FOR PROFIT...... let me repeat FOR..... P R O F I T .. organization .... they accept MONEYYYYYYYYYY from manufactures for testing vehicles and sending out cash with surveys when people buy vehicles ... Listen to the words in the awards and marketing " Initial quality " HELLLOOOOOOOOOOO MCFLYYYYY anyone home?!?!? Not 2,3,5,10 year quality ... Initial aka when you are signing the papers and drive off the lot.... not to also mention GM products ALWAYS dominate the " worse reliably and most repairs/recalls lists " . Anyhow yeah almost any weather the Ferrari is out and about , anything over 3-4" of snow she's in the heated garage and the Rover is being used. Monday to Friday I use 1 every other day and drive them as much as I need to. I have " first world/Ferrari stupidity" complaints about the GTC4Lusso, 1: drivers & passenger door windows don't do auto-close, only drivers does auto down. 2: Wish the glass roof at least tilted up to vent and/or opened up. 3: front end suspension lift went up or down faster 4: Needs a electrically heated windshield for snow driving ( like my rover has, and now Bentley Conti GT does), the dash windshield defroster air vents aren't as good & big as they should be 5: instead of gears 1-4 it's in AWD and 5-7 rear, wish it was AWD in all gears, winter driving in 4th gear at 65mph tach is at 42-4500 RPMs while in snow ( 4th is good for 132 MPH at almost red-line... just sayin makes for fun light snow driving & doughnuts ) ... gets annoying after 20-30 minutes of driving . 65K miles I've had the rear wheel steering ( left rear) actuator fail ( made by continental & covered under warranty) , right adaptive active headlight replaced dealer replaced the entire headlight assembly ( warranty) , JBL Subwoofer replaced , might have happened during a long drive late at night and needed motivation to get home. 2 recalls , 1 for passenger front airbag replacement , 1 for certain VINs with defective oil/water pumps leaking . Other than that I had in my mind that buying a Ferrari would have been a bad high maintenance purchase.... I was dead wrong! it's no worse than buying a American build highly over marketed sports car.

    You nailed the real difference...tolerances. All cars, regardless of manufacturer, will develop problems over time. The difference is, like you said, a car being built on the edge of what is possible. The margin for error is very slim. I have an old school 406 CID small block chevy that makes 610hp at the crank naturally aspirated. Like a supercar, it requires constant minor maintenance to prevent catastrophic failure and gets a major overhaul every 15k-20k miles. In factory production form, that engine would have gone 200k with very few issues. For those comparing a Camry to a supercar, well, it's hard to argue with idiots.

    High performance cars, often driven hard. And often they are breaking after 10 years or so. My 8yo Porsche broke a lot too.
    These cars need at least 15-20 minutes of sub 4k revs warm up period. They also need fairly regular (annual probably best) fluid changes. That's pretty much all fluids, outside of trans. Even people do that annually.
    458s are more reliable, although they can have issues. Ferrari has been steadily improving reliability as they have introduced longer warranties.
    As you say, the main problem is a car sitting, doing nothing. It is FAR better to drive a car HARD AS NAILS (after warm up!) once a week than once every 2-3 months.
    One final thing.. I have really noticed my 360 just doesn't like temps below 3 degrees. And what's the point anyway, the car is pretty unstable and not that enjoyable on icy roads.
    And it always pays to find a good specialist mechanic with SD2 and buying a decent OBD reader than can legitimately read Ferrari codes will come in useful too. The X431 Pro is one example.

    • @normalguysupercar

    Cars are meant to be driven. There’s a guy in Japan who’s been daily driving a McLaren P1, and he’s had few issues at all. I’ve personally seen a Ferrari 360 with 150,000 miles on it, the red one that was all over articles two years ago. Hiding a car away and keeping miles off of it is pointless, and it’s downright neglecting the car. The only time I ever let my car sit longer than overnight is when I travel by air, but other than that, it’s my daily driver. You’re doing more harm than good if you’re letting it sit in a collection and not actually driving it. If it’s got tires and a steering wheel, and I own it, it’s getting driven, period.
