G'day Alisa, I look forward to trying this. I will make the facing longer, add elastic to the bottom and use it as a shelf bra. Thanks for your clear instructions.
I just made this! Thanks for the pattern! I chose a fabric that made it way more fiddly than I think it should have been, but I'm happy with the outcome :)
Thank you so much! It was a gift from a sewing friend and for the looooooongest time I had no idea what to make and how to use it and then one day I thought of a top like this! It think it really shines as this retro top :)
I love the sleeves! This is exactly what I've been looking for. I have some strapless shirred dresses that I've been wanting to add sleeves to. I think these will be perfect. You do fabulous work!
I just subscribed. I have been watching videos for several years trying to figure out how to use patterns. I watched yours years ago. But TODAY the lightbulb went on about creating a bodice block.
Lovely. It was very helpful that you talked us through your adjustments as fabric did not cooperate with your first "plan". That is always so important -- the thinking process and adjusting (sewing and life).
Hi Alisa!! I love, love, love, love this top.. Your fabric choice was perfect too.. I would love to make a maxi dress like this.. Also thanks for showing us on the spot what went wrong & how you came up with a solution to fix it.. Deeply appreciated everything…. 💜💜💜🧵🧵🧵
Just subscribed 5 minute into this video. I sewed for decades from patterns. But now mostly from upcycle clothing. Your instructions are simple and the reasoning explained well. Beginners can go from here to understanding fit and patterns. I took a couple designs classes back in 70s. But I just want some simple reminders and helps me size adjust some patterns I bought for style but too small. I can make fitting overlays! Thanks so much.
This top is just adorable! I think I'm going to look for some fabric to make this. You look just adorable in it. Thanks for this video and the instructions on how to make it.
Thank you, Annie! The fabric is something awesome -isn't it? It was a gift from a sewing friend from a few years back and was thinking over these few years what would be the best way to utilize these fun stripes and colors. I think this design can shine in so many ways - from simple grey jersey top, to maybe even stretch satin or stretch velvet!
@@ThoughtfulCreativity I love this fabric, you don't often see things like this except in the big New York fashion districts. You really made it shine.
Loved the top and what pretty fabric! The wavy effect is awesome! I will check out the other video (turning this top into a dress) - great versatility! Thanks for sharing!
I absolutely love this top. I may just need to find some fabric and make one. I just made a wrap skirt for my daughter to get married in. She picked out the fabric and I suspect the material is some sort of mystery polyester. Very thin and flowy fabric. So I decided to just use my serger for most of it. I then found the 3 needle rolled edge stitch and I am completely in love as I didn't need to hem the skirt and using a 40 wt glossy Rayon thread, it gave the edge a beautiful professional finished look. I will most definitely use this stitch again, maybe even with this top. Thank you so very much for this video.
Yes, OMG love the rolled hem! You can use it to make scarves, chiffon skirt, pretty tops - yes and yes. I thought about using it on this top, but the "bumpiness" of the fabric just wasn't having it at all... Congrats on your daughter's wedding!
@@ThoughtfulCreativity thank you. I procrastinated all day, because of some stupid fear of changing ALL the settings on my serger and then I just said what the heck and did it. I mean, best decision ever. My daughter looked at me and said, "how'd you do that?" Magic my dear, magic. 🤣🤣🤣
Yes ma'am, the drafting technique is exactly the same, so this will be as 1-2-3. Super easy! :) I am finalizing last additions to the Instructions Sheets and upload them to the drive shortly :)
Thank you for all your tutorials. What i love about your videos is that they’re all relatable and practical. No fancy materials and easy to follow. I always look forward to your new projects. Awesome job! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼❤️
My first time working with knits, inspired by this video... I really love it so much I wish I could share it here! Thanks for sharing this pattern with us!
Thanks, when I started sewing shirred dresses I could NEVER get the straps to be in the right place, and your idea to fold the top in half and then half in front and back is great!!!, thanks!!
I love the top! Can you do a video tutorial how to draft and sew a swimsuit? I have a hard time finding swimsuit that fit me or that has colors that I like. It’ll be cool to be able to sew a simple and modest Tankini.
The thing that frustrates me most in TH-cam tutorials is when they say, "Measure x in/cm", but don't tell you WHY!? Where did that number come from, bc you're tiny and I'm a giant! So THANK YOU SO MUCH for explaining WHERE your numbers come from!!!
Absolutely, I always try to explain what and why are we doing this and that, because without using your own measurements - you can't construct a garment that will fit you. I am so sorry about your frustration. If you want to watch my knit bodice block video - that one goes in detail about measurements and what goes where. Link is in the infobox.
Wow Alisa I have started working on a kimono that I made using your tutorial to draft my own and I am definitely surprised by how well it fits me. But this top tutorial has me itching to try it like never before. I love this top, it is so cute and just the right amount of sexy, I cannot wait to try it and it's all due to your beautiful voice explaining so clearly step by step how to do it. You are amazing! Thank you!
Absolutely! you can also make larger sleeve, like over the top avant-garde design, or tie them with a ribbon, or do a criss-cross sleeves - possibilities are endless!
I love everything about this!!! I have the same server but so far I have u packed it. I’m so nervous to use it for some reason. I even collected a stash of knits to play with but I’m still intimidated. Anyway, thank you so much for another great video! I will try this one when I get my nerve up 😃
@Tracy Bingham don't let that thing intimidate you. Sergers are miracle workers. I changed all of the settings on mine to make a rolled edge stitch in lieu of hemming (see my comment). Sergers are magical beasts.
Tracy, get that serger working for you! There are lots of serger tutorials out there. Set up your iPad, laptop or phone right next to your serger and follow along. You won’t regret it. That stash of knits will come in so handy as you learn how to use your machine. Enjoy the process! Take notes if that’s how you best learn something new. 💕
Tracy, try to find videos about your brand and model serger. Sewing Parts on Line as some very good serger tutorials for beginners on You Tube. Good Luck. My serger sat in its box for over 5 yes while I got up the nerve to learn to use it. I haven't learned all the stitches yet, but I can thread it. And I can use the 3 and 4 thread overlock. At 68yrs. old I am quite proud of my self. So I understand your fear, but do it. girl and make your sewing life easier.
Love the pattern, but the shoulders are hard to do this way. I ended up sewing them together and on the top and later figured out the curvage. I couldn’t get it pinned while having it on. The rest was nice and easy even for a plus size like me. Thank you.
Claudia, thank you for the feedback and I am soo happy that you found a way around it! Yay! It make me super happy that you enjoyed sewing it and made somethin beautiful for yourself!
I really love your videos. As a beginner sewer you make me believe I can actually do this. I am wondering where the best place to shop for fabrics is. I went to Joanns the other day but the selection wasn’t so good. Any advice on that would be appreciated. As I’m sure you know the top looked beautiful on you. 😊
This is a super cute top! For me I'd like a little more coverage around my underarm in the back. Do you think I can use the front pattern piece on the back as well? Without the gathering at the centre, of course!
I am very much a beginner sewer and want to try this but don't know if it's necessarily a beginner friendly project. The top did turn out beautiful though. 😊
Katie, it depends on how many things you have tried in sewing..if you have never sewn with knits - then do a simple project, like an infinity scarf first, test the stitches, see what works, get the right ballpoint needles...
I LOVE this top, but I like my arms covered pretty much all the way to the elbow. Do you think it would work just making the length of the sleeves longer? I'm trying to visualize how the armpit would be addressed, and if lengthening the sleeve would ruin the cute lines. Thank you for all your cool videos!
Hmmm, I don't think it would work with sleeves on like this, I feel it would end up looking like two wings and a fold in the armpit area, BUT you can just make a regular top with square neck and elbow length sleeves, will pretty much give you the same effect.
Awesome video! What kind of needle do you use on a straight stitch on this type of fabric? Do you have a video on different types of needles to use on different fabrics?
You can find this information in a user's manual for any sewing machine or on Singer/Brother website - they explain really well what needle is used for what.
I LOVE this Alisa!! I actually have a pattern that’s similar (George and Ginger Daydream dress, but it’s since retired). I was curious as to how you finished the neckline ( G& G is lined). I never thought I’d doing a facing, I’ll have to give it a try.
Rikki! Hi! Well, I had to problem solve on the spot :) I would have lined it if I had a thinner jersey on hand, I would have also done a stretch interfacing if I had it, but oh well- this worked out too :) actually when I made, I did think (no kidding) that this sis something that Rikki would make, but only in a dress version :) midi length, am I right? :)
You know me too well;) A dress would be my first thought of course, but after seeing the sketches you did, I’d really like to make it as a swimsuit top 😄.
5:07 so is this just flat fabric with a pattern, or is this black fabric stitched into the flower pattern fabric. This shape is really cool. I have see tutorials on how to get curves like that by sewing.. but I'm not sure what I'd look up again to find it and remember how to do it.
Could you show us how to put in a collar? I’ve been dying to make a lightweight jacket (like a blue Jean style jacket) to wear over sleeveless tops. I’ve only seen very long, complicated videos that are more geared towards dressier jackets. I’m just hoping you could simplify it so I can I understand it better. 😥
Gosh I just made my very first top, a bit confusing for a beginner I guess. I didn’t know how to gather and I don’t know at what point you hemmed the edges of the shirt (did you?). I just ended up double folding them and sew the sleeves in with it. It’s definitely not perfect but It’s actually wearable and pretty. I should learn some more basics first haha.
This Top really is beautiful and elegant. Terrific fabric. But hey 😊 try to say this three times quickly in a row: "straight strech stitch" "😏 quite impossible for a German tongue.
Turn this top into a dress, it's really easy --> here's how - th-cam.com/video/GTXYCxa4l7I/w-d-xo.html
As an experienced sewer of over 60 years I am in awe! I can’t wait to try this. I’m think of a nightie or PJ’s.
You are amazing and yes, the pattern was adorable 💗. Thank you so much. Hugs and kisses from 🇮🇳. God bless you 😇

Hi, what should I do to raise up the back? The front bodice looks gorgeous. But I am not confident to show my back that much.. :-)
Do the same as for the front but instead of bringing it down to the side seam at center mark, do it at 2/3, so that way it hits the shoulder blades.
