I've always believed sewing my own clothes is WAY cheaper than buying the same quality. I can't afford to buy custom made, haute couture clothes, but I can sure make them for myself. The greatest compliment is "Where did you buy that?" and answering, "I made it." So don't compare the cost of making your own clothes to the cheap fast fashion garbage, compare it to the custom made, haute couture clothing and you'll realize that sewing is truly an affordable way to have great, well-made, well-fitting clothes that last a long time.

Great sewing story! Totally relate to No.5. I'm aged 65 and after a couple of years of endlessly watching TH-cam videos about sewing and sewing machines I have finally made 2 wearable garments and they are Hana Tanks. I love the style and the fit. One is in a Liberty Lawn and the other is a lined cotton dobby. I have a thrifted vintage Singer and just bought a vintage buttonholer to finish off my Hana's. I am so proud of myself for not being intimidated by it all☺️ Keep on with your vlogs Casey. Love your style.

While a sewing machine is a fairly expensive purchase, you will have it for a long time. I bought a little Bernina when I was pregnant with my first child, 50 years ago. I sewed a lot of clothes for my children and myself and did a lot of mending for my tradie husband on that machine. I loaned it to one of my daughters for a couple of years when she had a commercial venture making bespoke vests for horse-riding ladies. I am still sewing on that little Bernina today. It has paid for itself many times over.
I know I'm a year late but... Just want you to know that you're actually one of the more skilled sewists I watch and that's what I love about your channel. You take on a little more difficult projects and show us how you do it. A lot of the other (often younger) youtubers have a strong focus on beginners. I love it that there are channels like yours, which are interesting for more advanced sewists.
You say before you started your TH-cam channel you were worried that other creators were chattier/ funnier. I find alot.of them quite over the top and annoying to be frank! Lol. I actually really love how real you talk and I can sit and listen to you for ages and really take in what you are saying without being distracted by over the top talking or trying to be cool! I too learned to sew as a teenager, and since retiring have been picking up my sewing hobby again -- really getting into it. I enjoy watching your videos to pick up more ideas. The videos are informative and interesting!!
My mother had a fabric and yarn store when I was young. I recall her getting somewhat frustrated when people were upset at how much it cost to sew. They thought they should be saving money. Her really good customers however didn't care how much it cost and loved that they had one of a kind clothing.
I haven't sewn in years and I'm more of a knitter another very expensive endeavor. But I bought a husgvarna about five years ago and I'm going to give it a go and make something. Just looking for inspiration.
Love your channel I think I’ve watched all of them in the last week. I too love to sew been doing it since I was 12. Turn 65 tomorrow. But I had a daycare business for 25 years that took all my spare time and energy. Just recently retired got out all my sewing again and I feel like a kid in a candy store. The creative juices are flowing. Learning new things every day. U tube tutorials have been so liberating. Thanks for all your hard work!!!

Casey, please don't sell yourself short! I only recently found your channel and love, love watching you! You speak well and have fabulous content, and your style is gorgeous. Since I retired 2 yrs ago I've been sewing again, but took last month off due to projects around the house and outside as I have a small farm with 3 horses that I love. This has given me time to think about what I really like to wear and the type of fabric I enjoy so I will get more enjoyment wearing the things I do make rather than making something that doesn't suit me just because some You Tuber sewed it. Hope this makes sense! Your channel is one of my favorites now. You are a beautiful person.

I'm so glad that you started this channel. I'm in my 60's and I can relate to you and your content and I have learned so much from you. You have an elegant style and a mature (in a good way) approach to sewing. I agree with you that sewing isn't cheap, and for me that is because I am not buying cheap stuff made in China anymore. I have decided to sew my own clothes (mostly) using beautiful, quality fabric. I would rather have one spectacular garment that I've made than 3 or 4 cheap RTW ones.

I learned I can thrift & upcycle 60% items (sweaters, patterns, fabric, notions, household decor) and sew 40% items (pants, easy tops, head bands/berets). So rewarding. Agreed, give yourself permission to learn and be imperfect. You learn alot ! ❤ love your channel!
I love your sewing story! I’ve been sewing my own clothes for over 25 years now - I even spent a year in a fashion design program - and I do find I save a ton on my clothes, but it’s in comparison to the price point that I used to buy at. I can buy incredible designer deadstock denim (or selvage denim) for $20-$30 and it takes me about 6 hours to make a pair of classic jeans. If I were to buy rigid denim jeans by Rag and Bone, it would be at least $200, so that’s how I justify my textile habit. The Anthropology tank that you kindly duped is polyester online and sells for about $170, and I think we made ours for a fraction of that so….score! Also, the cheap manufactured clothes that are only $30 are made for slave wages and conditions, so we’re avoiding that by making our own. The only person I regularly exploit is me. Congratulations on the new textile habit and love your channel! ❤️
Agree. My fabrics are pricey, more than slave clothes, but I justify that for $50 I make garments that would be $200 to $300.
What's your source for deadstock denim? I've had such a difficult time finding high quality selvage denim.
What is the denim you are speaking of and where do you get it?
Hello from London …Yes I agree that making your own clothes isn’t necessarily a cheap option, especially if you buy good quality and more natural and sustainable fabrics . However when I look at some of the brands I like here in UK like TOAST and OSKA ( German brand) then my clothesmaking is a cheaper option. I’ve really appreciated finding a suitable pattern for trousers with a true waist ( rather than one with elastic) as I find trousers challenging to buy as I don’t have a small waist …so if the waist size is correct the width of the legs is too big. Anyway what you’re saying chimes with me !!. I also sew and go to a class to help my technique…it keep my brain active ( I’m 68)….it helps,me challenge myself. it’s like architecture for the body….. Thanks !
It’s what you say that will start people sewing. I started sewing in junior high school and when my sister saw me sewing she wanted to learn so I taught her. With that said you have influenced a lot of people to start their own sewing journey. The easier the explanation the easier they catch on. Thank you for being on TH-cam with all your hard work.

I’m nervous about cutting into my fabric but I’m getting over it. I have started on my Bachelors degree in Cybersecurity all online so I think I can start sewing.

I’m 74 and have been sewing since my mother taught me at age 10. Fast forward to high school when I managed to cram a Home Ec class into physics, calculus, chemistry, etc. I’m only 5’1” and weighed about 100 lbs most of my life. Clothes that fit me were just not available back then. Everything about sewing appeals to me. I love being able to create something that fits MY body. Along the way, I made adorable clothes for both my sons, my nieces and nephews, and my own precious granddaughter. I’ve made sleeping bags, wedding gowns, purses, slip covers, and gorgeous window treatments that I could never have afforded to have custom made for our home. When I retired as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in early 2019, little did I know that I would soon be making face masks for my former coworkers who were working endlessly to get through the COVID-19 epidemic. You are so right about this amazing hobby not being cheap. It is, however, a priceless talent to have. I’ve seen so many TH-cam sewing videos and yours is the only one I subscribe to. I love your concise presentation, your voice modulation, and the topics you choose. Your patterns are absolutely wonderful. I always look forward to your videos!

I do more quilting these days than garment sewing and have found that the number two thing you learned is absolutely true with quilts also. Most people are not going to pay a decent price to cover the costs of fabric plus labor on a nice well made quilt when they can buy one at a big box store for just a few dollars.
That is SO true! When I had that other business, people would say "you should make (insert expensive-to-make-product that can be found for cheap at a big box store)". I was like, "nobody will buy it!" 😅

I always watch your videos. I have sewn my own clothes since I was 14. That outfit was a black and white wide striped vinyl mini skirt in the 60s. I have had a love affair with fabric, textiles, and all things hand craftednas long as I can remember. Your channel gives me what I am looking for - unique ideas as you fearlessly go forth and tackle projects without the security of a lot of directions and a pattern. I’m so impressed with your work. I am 69 and more than ever, I am loving sewing my own clothes. More challenges with an aging body - but I plan on holding my own style as long as I am around. I just love sewing! I think I have every one of your patterns. I have left sewing at times - career, kids, aging parents - but always, always go back to it… thanks for your channel - I just love your authenticity!

Great video! You are so sincere and willing to share your knowledge of sewing and I really appreciate it! I took up sewing after retiring and really am enjoying it! I think most of us crave some type of creative outlet and sewing is a great one! I also love thrifting and have had great luck finding material at thrift stores! Lol not very successfully, however you have been encouraging. You’re correct when you say fabric is not cheap, nor are the sewing accessories. Hello there Casey, love watching your channel, totally inspirational! I started sewing again after many years, during COVID lockdowns to stop me from going stir-crazy. Took out my old machine, dusted it off and started with chaning clothes I no longer wore. And now its an absolute passion, and indeed can be quite expensive! I have learned so much and continue to do so. I also try to source fabrics ethically. Watching TH-cam channels like yours has prompted me to step out of my comfort zone and try difficult makes, some fail, but hey, when I am successful, wow, I'm blown away to think that I actually made that! I am totally in my 'happy place' sewing. Thank you for sharing, happy sewing 😊

You are a huge inspiration to me. I took a few classes in someone's den 30 years ago because i had always wanted to learn, and made a robe that i still wear, a MuMu for my mom, a cape... and then tried to recreate my favorite little cap sleeved shell that I'd gotten grease on, and it was a complete failure. I had been so careful and tried so hard. And i gave up.
But im back now and going for broke. Thank you for all the wonderful advice and help. ❤️ I'll be hanging on to every word.

You are so talented! I think one of the things that makes your channel unique is that you are making your clothes for yourself. Other channels have sew-a-longs, but you are easier to identify with. You have goals - like making clothes for your recent vacation. That is something I'd like to do too-- so watching you helps me visualize that. You also communicate well and talk about things that are of interest - like how you learned to sew and what you've learned -- like in this video. You aren't like all the others-- and that is part of what makes it a good channel. And you encourage us!! Like item #5 in this video!! Thank you!

Thanks Casey for sharing your journey! As its a bit like this for me whereas after retiring from work I found time to really get to know my sewing machine since I replaced the old one with a Janome mid range so got to know it after watching heaps of youtube videos. Taught myself how to do things that I would not do as I am a perfectionist where if it does not fit right then I wont wear it. So now had to put the sewing away for awhile as we are moving house and am missing it heaps but maybe in a month or two will be back at it. Keep up the good work and do think you are doing a very good channel teaching us all about sewing and what to expect from it. I had thought about making all my clothes but now think it is still a hobby for me, one that I enjoy as I am learning something everyday. The only big expense that I might have to buy is a cover stitch machine as I do love to make garments with knit fabric. Just love the finishing off with hems etc and so makes it look more professional.

I LOVE my serger and really want to get a coverstitch machine one day for even more professional looking knit garments.

I enjoyed this! You have so much to offer and I am glad you are building your channel. I could relate to your feelings about sewing and how it fits into your life. I am hooked on it too :) When I retired 6 months ago, I dove into quilting which has provided another satisfying creative outlet. I wonder if you've been attracted to any of the quilted jackets out there. Right now I am drafting a pattern for an unlined work jacket for myself and I am planning denim and heavy linen versions. It might also be fun to make a patchwork quilted jacket.

Great video Casey. I enjoy seeing your creativity and love love love the poppy pattern. That collar is a beautiful high end design. Am glad you put yourself out there. Sewing is not a cheap hobby, but I learned from Nancy Erickson, who had a long time subscription fabric & pattern business called Fashion Sewing Group, to put your effort into sewing items that are high return i.e. expensive to purchase high quality pieces. That’s what I focus on anyway. I can’t afford a custom cashmere coat from Max Mara or Chanel, but I can spend $100 on fabric and knock one off that fits me perfectly & has extra pockets. Now that I work remote I’m enjoying making more casual clothes these days and I’m loving all these new indie pattern designers like you. Disappointed by the big 4 and Jalie doesn’t fit every need. Keep on going!! 🪡🧵

You are so spot on about sewing the nicer garments--I really enjoy sinking into a good jeans or outerwear project, something I know I'll wear like crazy and can customize to be exactly the style and functionality I want/need...and the pockets! When you can add your own pockets, the RTW ones just don't measure up (they're always too small)! haha.
Proud of you for your courage. It is interesting how we see you way differently than you do. When I started my own business over 30 years ago I stewed and drove myself bananas worrying that I didn't know enough. THAT never seemed to be an issue - you always know more than some or many. Thank you for your videos. You are very practical and inspirational. I started sewing at the age of 12 because I stopped growing at 6feet, and either wore what "Granny" made or made what I wanted. There weren't any cute stores around then. I stopped and picked up again after several years. The main benefit for me is learning my size and appreciating that, and actually realizing that I have a style. Sometimes I would buy stuff just because it fit or was on sale, not really liking what I bought, which was a waste. You are correct that the industry is deceptive, especially with sizing. Most stores are closing down their plus size areas so it is more necessary than ever. Love your style and patterns, and the way you go through how you put things together and recreate styles. Sewing can be very expensive, but I have grown to understand that it takes as much time to make something from cheap fabric as more costly, and since I am trying to be sustainable with this "hobby", I choose better fabric when I can. I have also learned that most people cannot tell whether your clothes are homemade or storebought. Wear your creations proudly. I also love thrifting and remaking. Great tips.

I see things in stores that I used to buy that just don't meet my standards or style at all anymore! I used to have so many clothes and hardly anything that I loved wearing (and my store bought clothing used to be so uncomfortable!). Now I take real pride in my wardrobe!

Thanks for the very useful video. I’ve been sewing since 1961 and it was only after watching Covid era TH-cam videos that I realized some stuff I’d done was “hard”. 😂These folks underestimate their ability, in my opinion. I started at 11 years old in 4-H with a skirt and by 25 had made prom dresses, bathing suits, lingerie, and tailored suits. I simply bought a big 4 pattern and followed the terrible directions! I could do that because I didn’t have anyone telling me something was too difficult! I’m glad you encouraged tackling anything and having fun because it has to be fun, creat, and challenging to hold your interest.

Definitely agree with most of these but the one that really stood out for me was "I don't have to make ALL my clothes just because I technically can." It's a weird combo of feeling like I "should" and thinking it would fit much better (no they don't unless I spend extra time to alter) and thinking I would save money by making instead of pay up for better quality/fit... at the end of the day it takes the joy from making the things I like. Now that I've let myself just make random things I like.. it's making me much happier.
I agree 100%! It is about the joy of it for me, too. And that includes making AND wearing. :) I enjoy my wardrobe so much more now that I allow myself to have a mix of RTW/thrifted and memade items that fit my style and work well together.

Fabric is my guilty pleasure splurge. I often find value or sale fabric but I will happily buy full price & expensive fabric if it's beautiful & I want it 😭😭😭

I love your videos. Number five made me smile. I started learning to sew at the age of five. I'm early 60 now. My grandmother made all of my and my sister's clothing, and her work rivaled that of the top fashion designers! No kidding. My mom sewed and created just as well and she was so was very talented too! At five I started sitting with them and just watching. They would let me thread the machine at first - and since I was very mechanical like my dad, threading the machine is what drew me into the entire process. Anyway, by high school I was making my own sundresses and throughout college, I'd find time to make my important event dresses. I skipped over a few decades to concentrate on my career as a corporate lender, but now after retiring early 8 years ago, I have started up again and I'm in the middle of sewing an entirely brand new wardrobe while my husband and I also farm for fun. Sorry - I didn't mean to write a book. Your number 5 just brought up a ton of memories! Sewing is a life long hobby. It is very mathematical and will engage the math/science minds as well, so everyone should give it a try! Angie in Charleston

I have sewn for most of my life too. I am the same age as Carolyn. I took ten years off and mastered cardmaking because I struggled to be able to make great wearing garments from established patterns. It is women like you, that have changed the role of patterns and the way we look at clothing. I now look to ready to wear for most of my ideas and garments I create. If I can find patterns to use all the better, otherwise I create my own patterns now. It is a freedom that has really come with time and a willingness to look beyond and figure out what I like to wear and learn how to create the pattern for it.
You hit on a lot of great insight for sewing your own clothing or not and buying things that serve us better than sewing them. I only buy things now that will give me the style and fit, I am looking for, and often I just learn from them. They are almost always thrifted clothing. I give myself the gift of failure and pass on those garments that don't work and look to figure out why and to learn from them. I also don't worry about the money I spend. I figure I spent so much more on paper craft supplies than fabric and notions. And I have benefitted from all the great garments I have done that are a success.
One other point, I have learned bra making, panties and swimwear. I love making my own now. It was a lot of work at first. I created bra making classes and learned the process as I went along and taught my classes. I won't deny that it took a lot for me to get my own bra patterns fitted right, but now I have great long wearing, well sewn bras that fit amazingly well. And I have simple easy patterns and bra kits to make whatever my heart desires. There is nothing anywhere that compares. It was a lot of work I don't regret a minute of it.
I am retired and had a great career in nursing. Sewing and fashion design is now a hobby. And patternmaking is what makes it all possible. Thanks for all your efforts and for sharing all your experiences. It all matters.

I’ll tell you what you add- REALNESS, POSITIVITY, KNOWLEDGE AND SMILEY-FACENESS! The #1 thing I have learned from sewing is that I am not good at bias binding square edges! Other than that, I feel like I know enough to be confident with attempting new techniques but not cocky enough to be a know it all! 🤪

Hi there. I love your videos. Can you tell me about finding the fabric? I really like fabrics that drape, for example, fabrics with rayon. Sometimes it seems like the fabric stores are stocked primarily with cottons for quilting. I need beautiful fabrics for inspiration, and I can’t find much to choose from. I live in Central Florida.

I have also had great luck finding some beautiful rayon/viscose fabrics at minerva.com recently (they ship internationally and have a large selection). Hope that helps!

I rewatched this while making dinner (thanks YT algorithms), and just had to laugh where Casey of the past said she doesn’t make her own swimwear. LOL…Casey of the future achieved that goal recently, with her wonderful swim suit makes in summer 2023.

Thank you for sharing. I really appreciate it. I am very intimidated by sewing again. I got so depressed that I did not sew for around twelve years and had lost interest in sewing and crafting. Last November God gave me back the want to again sew and craft. The reason that I feel intimidated is that I have recently watched videos where people are sewing with fabric types that I have never heard of. I have only sewn with cotton and don't know how to sew with other types of fabric. I recently got some curtains which I need to alter and have no idea what size of needle I need in order to do so and what fabric type that they are. Unfortunately, in JoAnn Fabric and Crafts where I shop some of the ladies who work there don't sew or know very little about sewing. I know that if I were to go to a Quilt Shop I could get all kinds of help, but that won't help me in sewing with other than cotton and learning to sew garments. I've done a bit of garment sewing, but have no idea what ease is and how to alter patterns. Would your videos teach me what I need to know regarding the things that I have mentioned?
Do a search on You Tube for this topic. There are several people who address this. One is Evelyn Wood. Her channel is geared toward vintage sewing and teaching beginner sewing basics. She has a video explaining how to determine the size you should sew based on your body measurements and pattern ease and describes it thoroughly. Karina from Lifting Pins and Needles is a master at teaching and demonstrating techniques. She has several videos on fitting. You Tube is a fantastic resource. I’ve been sewing my own garments for two years and one of my favorites is the Fern Top by Pattern Scout. I have three! Casey hit it out of the park with that pattern. And you can use lightweight cotton, linen, or a linen blend so you can be successful with those fabrics. It’s not a very fitted top so you have that going for you. I think it comes with cup sizes (?). Jump into sewing and enjoy the process!
So glad your desire to sew is back! I do talk a little about fabrics and needles in some of my videos. I would suggest getting the multi-size pack of the Schmetz universal sewing machine needles. Those are what i use for most projects and a "70/10" or "80/12" size will probably work well for **most** garment projects. I think you just have to dive in and try a couple of projects :)
Evelyn Wood has many videos of basic sewing instructions. And good old Nancy Zeiman’s videos are still floating around, and still relevant. RIP, Nancy

Wow you learned fast. You also sew fast! I’ve been sewing since I was a kid,I can’t sew that fast. I make Raggedy Ann dolls,one takes about 16 hours. Hand embroidered face and hair sewn not glued. People think 50 each is too much. Ya,for sure.

Have enjoyed watching your vlogs. Have found it inspiring to watch. Only one thing I would like to mention, and please this is not a criticism, but I notice you don’t use your IDT on your pfaff. The IDT is the best part of the machine and makes it sewing so much easier. It’s the reason I love Pfaff sewing machines!
Thanks so much! Honestly, I haven't noticed much difference when using the IDT on lighter weight projects, but usually use it for more heavy-weight projects (when I remember to engage it 😬). It also seems to get hung up on my threads and fabric folds, so sometimes I'll disengage it then forget to engage it again (or if I change presser feet). I still love my Pfaff, though! It is a little workhorse and the best machine I have had!
I recently checked pattern prices at a fabric store. Shocking! My mother in law sewed for years. Grandchildren came along and she was sewing 3 pj's for each every Christmas. From one grandchild eventually to 16. I started collecting patterns for her : garage sales, by the bag from flea mkts. Rummage sales, etc., or just for free. I have 32 boxes filled with 70 to 75 patterns in each. Nobody ( at least in my family) wants them. I see some in Antique stores/malls for $1. on up but they don't seem to be selling. My thought was to put them in zip-lock bagges to protect them for Antique store sales as the ones l see there are rapidly destroyed. At this time, there are no plastic ziplocks of the right 2 sizes. I would have to order 5000 from a plastics c

Please don't ever compare yourself to any other You Tubers out there. I read several comments below and one person said how refreshing your "no nonsense" approach was and I can't agree more. I think you come across very genuine and that is so appealing. I found you when I was endlessly searching for a button up shirt and Lord knows you know how excited and obsessed I was making the Byrdie Button up for which I now have 7 I believe. I went from "Grainline" to "Gertie" making shirts and then finally found the Byrdie. I have boxes of fabric I don’t want to ruin by making mistakes. I keep thinking I’ll buy cheap fabric to test on but I still don’t cut 🤦🏻♀️ .. ✂️✂️✂️✂️
You will benefit from a shift in your thinking. Those mistakes are going to be how you learn and improve. That fabric isn’t bringing you any joy by sitting there. Cut into it! I “ruined” a top by pressing without a pressing cloth (I know, I know) I love the top so I just wear it anyway with a cute cardigan that covers my mistake. Guess what? I’ve never made that mistake again AND I’m so proud of the top, mistake and all.
I can so relate to that! I have a few special fabrics in my stash that I am so reluctant to cut into--waiting on that "perfect" project 😅 So I end up making wearable test garments out of the less nice stuff.
the thing about it being expensive is true. I spent about more than $200 on buying sewing machine and the accessories, not including the garments. And there's a reason why it is more expensive than buying fast fashion. Buying fabric in bulk will be much much cheaper than buying only 1-3 yards which most corporations get for buying tons of fabric. Then, they pay worker in low wage countries to cut and sew it. Those workers do the same thing over and over again, hence the speed of production. And last, corporations dont really pay attention to the quality of the fabric. Most use cheap rayon, or cotton with mixed polyester. Even sometimes 100% poly. If you want this to be cheap hobby, I got my first sewing machine from my late grandma, and mostly thrifted my fabric. It will be much cheaper.
