    One thing I noticed about goku is that he loves knee and elbow strikes. Originally I thought it was muay Thai but upon research I found out it was a Chinese martial arts style called bajiquan. I think Goku's main advantage is his body's ability to store and release energy. Sure, we see him eat 10-25,000 calories at a time. But he's got the most Stamina. He could go from 0 to 100 and back and anywhere inbetween, and always train harder and faster to reach another order of magnitude.

  • @giodawg45

    Goku vs Cell is my favorite fight in DBZ. You’re right about how he displays all of his skills and techniques against Cell. All in attempts to defeat him of course, but Gohan was watching and learning. Goku gave up and went all out. To Gohan it seemed that Goku wasn’t going all out. Gohan compared his own power to Goku’s confirming he was at a higher level than his father. To me, that fight is peak DBZ but others are very close.

    Yha I noticed for a very long time knowing goku he isnt a defense type at all. But I guess it can mean just anything with being goku. Like he uses hes face to defend or wait till he sees at least a few attacks before fighting the enemy and that's why vegeta loses cause he always attacks first without analyzing the enemy's fighting abilities. So yha but also goku is a stealth type fighter so that can also be a defense type for him.

    A thing I've noticed is that fans regard the results of fights differently to the characters themselves. The Majin Vegeta vs Goku is a great example because the fanbase still argues over who won while both Vegeta and Goku consider it a loss on their parts. Not a draw in any sense except that neither side was victorious or felt like they won. Goku vs Kid Buu feels similar because while the fan consensus is that Goku eventually won, Goku himself probably counts it as a loss even though Kid Buu was stopped because he didn't win the actual fight. Another example is arguably Vegeta and Goku's first fight, Vegeta refers to it as his loss multiple times but knowing Goku there is no way Goku considers himself the victor, they both lost that fight in their own eyes. I guess the best way to put it is that sometimes a fight doesn't have a winner, it ends with every party taking a loss.

Kyokushin has training methods inherited by okinawan Goju Ryu,if i am not wrong they have a certain kinship in members studying both. Kung fu i say specifically for the elbows,seems very Hung Gar or Bajiquan. Both are styles associated with Wuxia heroes,very popular,and using forearms and elbows.
    Kung fu would also explain the capoeira elements,actually from monkey kung fu,very acrobatic,fighting from crouched position or jumping,biting scratching. Not to mention the giant monkey theme going on for sayans and their importance in asian martial art culture.
    The kicks seems very sport karate,at the beginning. At a certain point he and Vegeta start to use a similar kickboxing/muay thai style. It fits better on Vegeta than Goku

    Very impressive. There’s not much to go on this so anybody want to see a talking point against it I’m not going to get any pushback. But honestly I don’t think Goku is bad at grappling, there are a few things on the planet we can literally out mountain when it comes to spring because they have the power to destroy multiple planets, then solar system, now universal. Now Multiverse. So loved we came across if they were able to grapple he would know how to get out of it. Just my personal opinion on the matter. Also in the world of Dragon Ball Z being too close to a pony while you have the advantage can be a disadvantage. For instants an energy blast from the hands or the head for the mouth or being able to protect it from any other portion of the body technically they have that ability to do even though we rarely seen it. To spell defeat for the person who is more of a grappler. One tiny tidbit, in GT Uub Transforms into Majuub: He is well-versed in Grassley, and something tells me he employs those techniques before he transform into a higher level mean. Because he did train & passed Goku’s test.

    Alot of this falls under a couple of things, Toeis approach to animating and extending fights, as well as Toriyama himself choreographing the fights. Especially in the Namek Saga. I dont see it as Goku lazy.
    You picked a point when Ginyu rushed Goku because Vegeta left him, and Ofcourse Ginyu is strong. And when he gets his bearings , he's blocking....he's dodging....he's countering. He's not powering up. Its clear as time went on, Akira's choreography approach evolved into more dramatic and telegraphed moves to accomdate the increase in speed, power and destructability.
    So i believe there are holes in the logic here when talking about Gokus gaps in his fighting style. Compared to The first fight against Vegeta, the second fight is literally, a MUCH Closer gap thats nigh even. No amount of skill in his fighting ability is getting him the wiggle room to overcome Vegetas speed and power without the Kaioken.

    • @TheAnimeTrainer
      @TheAnimeTrainer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So the behind the scenes production reasoning doesn't really matter. What matters is what actually happens in the story.
      I'm not saying Goku can't fight. He just grows slowly as a fighter because he relies on power.
      Power is what he relied on against Vegeta in the first fight. When Vegeta and Goku fight the second time they are basically the same skill level and Goku has matured more as a fighter, so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here.

    • @UnifiedEntity
      @UnifiedEntity 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheAnimeTrainer I'm saying the first fight, nothing Goku had without the Kaioken was going to work against Vegeta. He was weaker and slower without it. He could "have a guard up" all he wants without it, but Vegeta was going to get by it easily.
      You see many moments when Goku is trying to get a grasp of where Vegeta is but simply can't and barely dodging while Vegeta is having a grand ol time. Technically he's not even relying on power, he's relying on his heightened senses and reflexes as well. You see he utilizes it to dodge and counter Vegeta accordingly multiple times.
      My point, he doesnt rely on power in a fight. What happens in the story is affected by production. And even that has it's own story. Akira aimed for flashier fights, so martial arts took a backseat. And that extended to EVERY fighter. Not just Goku.

    • @TheAnimeTrainer
      @TheAnimeTrainer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think that your claim that Goku doesn't rely on power holds weight when you look at the whole of his combat history.
      And, of course nothing Goku would do in the first fight would matter, Vegeta was literally 2.5x stronger than him. But that doesn't change the fact that he was outclassed in skill. Just because it wouldn't have helped in the end, doesn't mean he shouldn't have had a guard, parrying, and better positioning.
      Because he couldn't match Vegeta in skill even with Kaio-ken, he had to overdo Kaio-ken to overpower him.
      I see what you're saying, but I don't think you're taking all of the fights into account and, once again, the production things do make things happen in the story but then we draw logical conclusions about the characters based on what actually comes about in the story. It doesn't matter WHY it happened due to production, it just matters THAT it happened.

    • @UnifiedEntity
      @UnifiedEntity 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheAnimeTrainer I'm not seeing the "skill" view. Vegeta doesnt do anything that demonstrated he had more skill. He just overwhelmed Goku with his speed. If anything his attacks. The gap was again to wide for raw skill to even be a deciding factor.
      How can you block, party, position yourself better when you can't track your enemy , let alone their movements? What I'm seeing is people just see power level as just raw strength. It encompasses more than that. You speak of Goku using better positioning, he literally maneuvers behind Vegeta during his Kaioken attack and attacks him from behind. Reposition + counter attack. Let's not forget the punch to the gut counter when Vegeta rushes towards. Guarding? Vegeta literally got his arms locked by Goku and had his fingers almost crushed.

    • @TheAnimeTrainer
      @TheAnimeTrainer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not saying he has no skill. I think you're misunderstanding me.
      And you're welcome to disagree with my assessment, but it is not without a great deal of examination and consideration of Goku as a whole martial artist and watching each fight multiple times.
      Vegeta has more skill because when they square up and stand in front of each other, Vegeta slips Goku's punches with minimal head movement with his hands up. Then Vegeta throws punches that hit their target because Goku has no guard to speak of. He slips Goku's kicks.
      As the fight progresses, he does land attacks and do technical things, but the deciding factor is not skill, it is the overwhelming force of the Kaio-ken than makes the difference.
      That's what I'm saying, though. I think you misunderstand me. I'm not saying Goku has NO skill or is UNskilled. I'm saying that Vegeta has the edge in skill until Goku used the Kaio-ken x 3 to overpower Vegeta. He was able to use his skills better once he bridged that gap, but Goku was not even in power with him, he was stronger than him with the KKx3.
      The gap in skill is not monumental, but Vegeta is better at defense and countering (front kick to Goku's chin to knock him out of KK).
      Like I said, you're welcome to disagree and that's fine. My interpretation is based on this fight as seen through the lens of Goku's whole fighting record up until this point. This fight is also not near as long as Goku vs. Majin Vegeta, so there is a lot less to analyze, so it makes sense that there could be more disagreement about the breakdown.
      In any case, thanks for your comments and discussion!

    I disagree about goku being less skilled. When it comes to a fight in the ring, yes more modern styles win since they are literally developed in that environment. But for the sake of winning a death match, martial arts are a well rounded style of win however you can. The fact that some can even compete with modern sport arts in the ring is a tell of just how good those traditional movements must be to even be able to keep up under the inherit disadvantage. Goku has fought against a wider range of opponents who were all stronger than him. I’d say he is FAR more skilled. Vegeta was just so much stronger that he could easily parry goku with his speed being far greater. Once goku was able to almost equal vegeta they were trading in goku‘s favor and then Goku went x3 just to win quickly.

    Whis was *SO* accurate about the whole, “Goku you let down your guard A LOT” thing in DBS. Never noticed that before. Or thought about how much he relies on his power boosting states. That said, his fighting style and powers together pretty much culminate in the Majin Buu saga to me. At least for Z. Majin Vegeta vs Goku to me is *one of* the best fights in the whole franchise. Original, Z, or Super. Who do you think is the better fighter overall, Vegeta or Goku? I know Goku tends to just have higher stats/reach new forms first either way, but in terms of fighting skill?

      I’d say goku is the best martial artist, SPECIALLY in close combat. Vegeta usually just relies on pure power and spent all his youth depending on zenkais do become stronger. And his techniques are only about destructive power: Galick Ho, Final Flash, Big Bang attack... all of them are almost the same thing and are long range destructive attacks. Vegeta does not have any technique for hand to hand combat that I can remember. While that, Goku trained martial arts all his life to become stronger with different master that have different fighting styles and has WAY more variated techniques, such as Kienzan, Zanzouken, Taioken, Kaioken, Mafuba, instant transmition, Ultra instinct, Kamehameha, HAKAI (manga only, it is not known when he learned it, but even vegeta was surprised with that), the paralysis technique he used on Broly. He is way more of a strategical fighter. He sneaked up on freeza using his Kamehameha under water, he figured out how to retaliate Hitto’s time technique, he figured out how to dominate super sayan’s maximum capacity, he mimicked Tenshinhan and several other fighters, he was able to kick JIREN out of the arena with STRATEGY, he survived Caulifla ssj 2 with his martial arts skills while he was weakened in base form, he surrounded kid Buu with his Ki blasts in mid fight and then sneak up on him beautifully (watch kid buu vs goku ssj3 and you will see it)... I mean, Vegeta never uses ANY tactic in close combat like that, he usually just tries to outfight his foes with his strength and power. Even in the manga, Vegeta only discovered about using both super sayan god and super sayan blue in mid fight because Goku figured that out against Hitto, and in the anime it is an exclusive feat of Goku against Jispo. Vegeta is a good strategist but only when it is about war, since he quickly planned a way to kill kid Boo in seconds (revive the people of earth and use the dragon balls...) and outsmarted almost the whole Freeza’s army in Freeza Saga, specially when he hided the dragon balls so only he could know where they were. He has the mind of a military in my opinion, while goku is the more refined martial artist and tactical hand to hand fighter. It’s stated that Goku is a genius several times when it is about combat, even Vegeta admitted that. Vegeta might be better when it is about destructive power, but if he fights against stronger opponents he can’t do anything about it, while goku can at least outfight and outsmart a stronger opponent with his techniques and tactics. Believe this will change in the Manga, but we will have to wait...
