I interpret it as the "hoping to be fired rather than have to fire someone" dread that accompanies people who already know they want to end the relationship, but feel bad, scared or even ashamed to do so. It'd be "easier" if the other part ended the relationship so they wouldn't have to do it themselves...
I defy people to not turn this up..
