    In 1993, Congress named Perryville as one of the Top 11 most endangered sites in the entire country (out of 384 battlefields), “with critical need for action,” and one of only 45 “Class A” battles that had “a decisive influence on a campaign and a direct impact on the course of the war.” Today, the history land is mostly saved, but there is still more to do. More land to save and land to take care of so that visitors can enjoy its history and beautiful nature and benefit the citizens of the local community, state, and nation.
    The Battle of Perryville on October 8, 1862, was fought between the Union Army of the Ohio, commanded by Major General Don Carlos Buell, and the Confederate Army of Mississippi, commanded by General Braxton Bragg. It was the largest and bloodiest battle fought in Civil War Kentucky and saw more casualties (7,600) than many other well-known battles. It was far bloodier than Champion Hill, Resaca, or Kennesaw Mountain. Learn more about the battle here: www.battlefiel...

    I don't think it is possible to do more, in seven minutes, to convey the meaningfulness , the sacredness, of this battlefield. Perfectly done. I thank ALL of those involved in the production of this small but beautiful gift to the American people.
    May the unfortunate souls that lost their lives there rest in peace.

    United we stand, divided we fall.
    God bless America 🙏

    My wife and I got to go there fall of 2019. Could only spend a day but had the entire place to ourselves. Rangers were amazing with giving us their time and helping us understand the battle. Joined the friends of Perryville while there. This is a forgotten gem for many Civil War students. I couldn't encourage people more to go and see this.

    Brilliantly narrated. I’ve watched a lot of civil war history videos. This one on Perryville Battlefield was easily the most captivating and meaningful so far!

    My great great grandfather fought here and stones River, Theodore C Altman Company H of the 59th OVI!
    Have a journal from him in our family which accounts the entire war. He said that it was a abnormally hot day and many soldiers were just trying to find water and that a battle for water literally took place at Perryville. He also said he remember the cries of the fallen that night.

    I read about this battle in Sam Watkins excellent memoir and been curious about it since. From what I can make out, the rolling hill ridges allowed for defence in depth. The first two lines of defenders were overrun but a courageous artillery fighting withdrawal and rallying of troops saved the Union on the 3rd ridge. Strategically, an important battle and as with all battles, a human tragedy.

    I live less than an hour away from there. I have only been there once. It looks much like the rest of Kentucky, beautiful rolling hills. The civil war we had was very brutal for many people. Kentucky did fight on both side. about 45,000 its estimated fought for the south, although I once read a number of 90,000. but who knows... over 100,000 fought for the north. A terrible time in our history that even today sparks debate, but not here. Its just a piece of history.. where men and fought and died for what they believed in. God bless all of them.

    My 6th Great Grandfather was there "He went out with the 98th Regiment of the Ohio Voluntary Infantry in the summer of ’62 and was assigned to company G. In October of that year in the battle of Chapline Hill, near Perryville, Ky., John Kilgore received 24 bullet wounds and one shell wound.
    He lay in the hospital till the spring of ’63 when he received an honorable discharge and came home to get along the best he could, carrying in different parts off his body, as he believed, 14 bullets that were never found, and he died in the belief that he carried these to the grave with him.”
    And here’s a bit from another newspaper report:
    “John Kilgore, of Co. G, was wounded five times, in the face and body four times. He continued to load and fire with the greatest coolness after he had been hit four times, and shot away all his ammunition.” Thank you for the video.

    I had Kentucky grandfathers in union and confederate army units. We must learn to listen to the opinions of others and peacefully work out our differences. If we don't, we will loose our children to the spectacle of war.

    I know that we will never come to a consensus view as to who was right and who was wrong during the American Civil War.
    Many of the same issues that lead to that war more or less in their own ways are still with us today and don't seem to be going anywhere.
    If those issues could divide a nation and lead over 620,000 of America's finest in both the North and the South to early graves and yet still not be fully resolved after 4 years of brutal war and over a century and a half of debate how can we expect to resolve these issues over a trivial little debate on social media?
    But the people of those times who sacrificed so much were better men and women than most of us alive and well today. Their courage and their honor is what we should all celebrate in unison and strive to emulate.

    The two days of the battle , water was scarce, was a very hot drought and the very small creek nearby was about dried up. The soldiers were very thirsty. And a bunch died thirsty.. Very Sad Thing

    How appropriate! Dvorak's Largo from his "New World Sympathy" the largo which later was given the title, "Goin' Home!" Kentucky had stars on both the Union and the Confederate flags. Though I am from Covington Kentucky, a place where the lifestyle is urban, I still have a great love for Kentucky's history and topography. I hate its horrible politics though! I am a member of The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and would be proud to call Steve Zahn an adopted son of Kentucky!

    I wish the American Battlefield Trust would clarify if they received a tax incentive on historical lands bought with donations from the public. If this is so the incentives should be made public as they are a big part in this.

    • @AmericanBattlefieldTrust
      @AmericanBattlefieldTrust  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The details on how land acquisitions work at the Trust are public and may be found here: www.battlefields.org/about/how-we-work

    • @tcarmack3494
      @tcarmack3494 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      American Battlefield Trust thank you... I read up on that.....so donations are a key part in acquiring these historical lands? So state and federal grants may also be apart of acquiring these lands? So basically you take donations from the public and grants. Which in simple terms donations and tax payer money? Because that’s what a grant is.
