Dude that's so fuckin true man. You make someone take responsibility either. They have to figure it out on their own. I was angry and always threw myself a pity party about being broke. Then I realized I was the problem now good things are happening.
Except he didn't.
He self reflected, honestly looked at his situation, and his responsibility. Forgave himself, let go, and moved on. Became free from resentment. Good work sir Charles!
'Self-forgiving' doesn't mean much. We alone can't forgive our own persons for such things. Rather, seeking forgiveness is what's needed.

I love Chuck, man. I love his humility and his self-reflection in this interview. It's always so reassuring when someone who's seen as a "prick" or "bad-boy" can reflect on those days and say, "hey, some of this shit I did was stupid. How can i grow from this?"
Chuck is the BEST example of this. It's amazing that the Chuck today, who night after night gets picked on for his weight and laughs it off, is the same Chuck from the '90s.

Wow. Spectacular anecdote and reflection. I have several relatives and friends who were never able to achieve that level of self-reflection and maturity. They just go around being angry and depressed and blaming the rest of the world for their own shortcomings. A big kudos to Barkley.
I think what I appreciate most about Charles Barkley is that he has learned from his mistakes and owns his responsibility. Those kind of character traits are the best types of role models in my opinion.

This is an amazing example of self awareness
The great ones take mistakes and turn them into life lessons, and mature quickly from those points forward. Barkley and Tyson are great examples of those who stumbled but did not fall off the cliff.

So when were we going to hear the story about when and why he spit on a little girl??
What I got from these clips is that chuck is able to take step back and assess his behavior, and ultimately change before it ends up costing him everything. A lot of ppl aren’t fortunate enough to have that foresight.
so few people can come to that kind of realization on their own. kudos to Mr Barkley.
That hate can drive a person but it will eventually burn you up inside. Taking responsibility for your life can hurt sometimes. But if your great at something letting your talent speak for you is so much more powerful than any cut or dig you could say to someone.

Except for his original apology, I had never read nor heard any more about it.
I am not gonna lie and say I became his biggest fan. I did, however, forgive him.
Now, he is the only thing I find interesting about basketball at the NBA level.
It's good that Mr. Barkley has the ability to reflect on his actions, thus learning from his mistakes. Many people don't have the capacity to do that. In fact they can never do that because they will never admit they are wrong about anything.

This goes for life in general not just sports. He got stuck in anger and resentment and let it run his life. But he's right if you let it run you eventually you will fuck up and fall off the cliff. This is why I respect him regardless of his mistakes. Because he was at least able to recognize them and fix them.

Maybe Mr Gomez wasn’t a basketball fan and didn’t care about Charles’ talent. He only cared about the mission he was given, to teach the young man. It took what, 7-8 years but the lesson sunk in.

I kinda want to see a biopic of charles over MJ...i think it would be more meaningful to reflect the TYPES of hardship barkley had to face over his entire basketball career, and when he finally retired, he got to rethink bout his life and start a new one as a man who is in an environment that needs more control of himself: Commentator on TNT
I think it would be much more insightful and less hollywood bullshit since this man had many failures but still keeps going, something we havent seen much on screen and more likely relatable.
MJ's story is great but i feel hollywood is just gonna do in 3 stages 1.Early success 2.Gamble issue, James' death and NBA retirement 3. Return to court and 3 peat and happily ever after. End of movie

Charles, this is a great interview and a great message. Everyone, especially now needs to look in the mirror and as, what can I do differently to make my life and the world a better place. It’s up to each and everyone to take personal responsibility.

I think Charles is a super intelligent person with tons of good to say if people just hear him out. We all make mistakes, it’s how you own and learn from them that grows you. Charles seems much bigger on the inside, where it counts, than the outside.
You are absolutely right. I love watching he and Shaq clown around on Inside the NBA, but then I watched some 5-6 minute interview of him describing like playing inside in the NBA versus playing outside and defensive shifts and I was blown away. Like, really clear, deep, complex. So, so good.
When you look inward instead of outward about your life and problems is when you grow up as a man.

I loved that Charles GOT it and understood that his actions created his outcome. His life turned around when he realized it wasn't anyone else's fault.
It seems a lot of men think it's manly to play on the edge with anger but it's because they don't know how else to get their emotions and energy to work for them in an easier way.

Personal responsibility is the key to growth and the key to becoming all that you are capable of being. This is something sorely missing with this current generation of kids and young adults.
Self-reflection, self-examination and eventual maturity...works for almost every responsible, thinking adult. Unfortunately, there are way too few of us these days.
The one thing that he said that I liked is that you don’t have to be mad at anybody. A lot of times we try to do so well to prove others wrong but we just need to do well for ourselves.

People give Barkley way too much credit for being candid. Just because an arrogant asshole bully is candid doesn’t make him a great person. Unfortunately, our culture is so about winning, that all is usually forgiven in the pursuit of winning. I remember far too many times when Barkley was an asshole. The worst for me was when he elbowed the kid from Angola in the Olympics, a country that had only 3 gymnasiums in the entire country. It didn’t matter the USA team won by 68 points, and it didn’t matter that it was the first iteration of the “Dream Team.” Barkley still justified elbowing a kid from Angola AFTER scoring and starting to run back up the court. There are so many professional athlete bullies who cheat or act like assholes for years, only to be given a pass because they won. That list includes people like John McEnroe, Mike Tyson, Patrick Reed, Serena Williams, Roger Clemons, Tiger Woods (YES, Tiger Woods), Alex Rodriguez, Floyd Mayweather, Barry Bonds, Tony Stewart, Jimmy Connors, and too many others to mention. Sure, they sound awesome years later in tv interviews, but many of them have been absolute assholes for much of their careers, but they were forgiven because they were good, and they were further forgiven in later years because they finally grew up a little bit. Barkley fits both of those categories.
Accountability start with you.

You know what I never thought I would agree with Charles Barkley but he is so fucking right on those points!!
It's a common theme I've encountered in my life among successful people, and that is, some catalyst that makes them look inward and suddenly hold themselves accountable for their actions. I clearly remember the moment I personally stopped blaming others and looked in the mirror. It's been all upward movement since.
I used to hate Barkley back in the 90s. I was living in North Carolina at the time and went to a Hornets game. My buddies and I sat in the first row behind the floor seats. We were trash talking Barkley all night, I was really giving it to him and he wasn't playing well. By the end of the 2nd quarter he had enough of me and gave me a look that said, "I'm coming over there"... well, my buddies and I got a kick out of that and didn't let him off the hook. It was a great night! After that game though, I didn't hate Barkley. And I ended up becoming a big fan of the guy. He grew up and let the world in. Sometimes that's all it takes.
