They are the top WDSF couple so there’s no dispute there. But there are still several things I don’t find that’s tango-y:
1. Frame is not compact enough and still too stretched to the side.
2. Man and woman’s head distance is quite big for tango. Still about compactness.
3. To achieve the staccato feeling, and also the feeling of “being able to stop anywhere”, one important distinction with swing dances is moving the leg first, and body weight later. But I don’t find it that often in the dance.
Make no mistake the dance still looks stunning. But it’s quite different from the tango 20 years ago. So you can either call it an evolution, or just a different kind of tango. Just like how Argentina tango is different from ballroom tango.
