  • In previous videos I discussed how to get a blunderbuss and that required doing some actual work yourself to make them fireable. In this video we review a "military blunderbuss" from Veteran Arms, a small shop that sells reproduction flintlocks (and blunderbusses) ready to fire.

    My experience with VA is similar. About two months wait three years ago. The lock and barrel are solid and reliable. Very crisp lock action and heavy but smooth trigger. Sparking action is reliable. My ramrod immediately fell apart at the screw end. In attempting repair I found the screw wire is not steel but bendy COPPER wire that has been tinned. Good enough for retrieving a lost wad or patch, but don't expect to use it for cleaning. VA was rushing to get me my gun and there was still moist/oily stain on my ramrod. Stock finish is fine, though a few places need a bit of smoothing. Premium price for this gun, but no real competition. I am satisfied with VA's effort and product, and feel more confident having a real person in the US who goes over these guns for problems/defects. *VA owner is cordial and pleasant to deal with!* p.s. I have taken turkey with 80 gr Pyrodex, and 1 1/8oz 7/8 birdshot. I have fired a couple rounds of 100 gr. I feel max range with this gun is about 40-60 feet. I use 11 Gauge cards and wads from Track of the Wolf.

    As a (formerly) professional carpenter, the Veteran Arms ramrod looks like it's cut with the grain while the other looks like a cross grain cut. Video compression may be betraying me on that, but you could make a new ramrod real easy. Find a dowel at your local hardware store (they'll probably have metal caps and possibly screw tips too) and you can glue and hammer on metal endpieces. Might make it last a bit longer.

    • @WendiGonerLH

    Oh hey veteran arms, I know them. They're based here in GA, down in Lumpkin. I even talked to the owner's wife once or twice. I got a charleville pattern pistol and 1777 musket from them. Took a very long time for the musket to show up because the parts got stuck in transit due to the preeminent issue of 2020 but once it got to me I was stoked. Thankfully the pistol only took like maybe a few weeks to get to my house.
    I haven't yet fired it (due to my apparent lack of ability to find goex 2f in stock frigging anywhere) but I can't wait. Glad to see the inrange team seems to like their work too so that gives me some confidence.

      It'd be slow, for sure,but it might actually suck slightly less to do. The long reload time gives you more chance to recover.

    • @Psiberzerker
      @Psiberzerker 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@alun7006 the thing is, the stress of throwing, and running makes your hands shake. So, it might interfere with your reload as much as aiming. I think we can just leave the clock off for this experiment. A tenth of a second isn't going to make much difference...

    I just received mine that I ordered from them. It's a work of art, not to mention a functioning firearm. Haven't shot it yet. I notice they say to use black powder ONLY, do not use Pyrodex or other BP substitutes. I read up on it and indeed Pyrodex and others generate different pressures than BP. With a steel barrel it's probably not an issue, but a bronze barrel isn't as strong, so I'm definitely going to adhere to that warning. I'm trying to locate some 2FG black powder at the moment.

    When I started into Black Powder, 1975, Dixie Gun Works had a blunderbuss kit. It had a steel barrel. .95 cal. with a 2" bell. Always regret not getting one since I can not find a good steel barrel at this time.

    I was given one of the Indian 1816 Springfield clones. I haven't fired it yet, but I did drill the hole and stripped the stock down. I stained it darker and without shine. Mine shows it is right around 69 cal. I have 69 cal balls, I just need to pick up some black powder. The frizzen on mine makes a pretty decent shower of sparks so I hope it doesn't have ignition issues. Now after seeing this, I want to pick up a blunderbuss!

    I'll take 5 :D - Great video! I am normally not into flinch-locks (I like them as historic weapons, but I don't know if they'd actually be fun to shoot - especially if you can have a semi-auto modern gun and hit more targets in the same time it takes you to fire and reload this thing!)

    I'm glad to see Veteran addressed the frizzen. Frizzen hardness is a big deal on these guns. Their hardening is very shallow as they come. I bought an Indian made flint pistol years ago that I got about 100 shots out of before the flint wore through the case hardening and the gun stopped sparking. With a torch and some case hardening compound I was able to put the frizzen through multiple cycles and let the case hardening really soak into the steel. It's worked fine since. All frizzens will eventually need re-hardening, but you should get thousands of shots before that happens, not 100 or so. Btw, it's blunderbussessessesi. 😂
