  • After the war, when the West German Army, known as the Bundeswehr, was reformed in 1955, the decision was made to develop a new generation of Jagdpanzers. As the founding officers of the Bundeswehr had roots within the old Wehrmacht of the Second World War, it is perhaps no surprise that the concepts of Jagdpanzer and Sturmgeschütz were revived in the form of a new tank hunter known as Kanonenjagdpanzer 1-3.

Interesting. I was commander and trainer on a 4-5 serving in Panzerjägerkompanie 440. While the tank was obsolete in the early 80s, its combat concept regarding T-54/55 and T-62 tanks was sound. We would "lurk" in camouflaged positions, wait until the enemy passed us and then hit them from behind. After that we would leave our positions and move to new, prepared positions farther back. The 4-5 was extremely fast, capable of 80km/h on roads (on paper 60 but if you had an inventive mechanical department much more) and not much less cross country. Driving it was actually real fun. I was one of the few commanders who also had driver training so i finished my days training recruits, because I was the only one who could drive the tank to the training ground and then switch hats to become commander again.
Also interesting was the company concept. We were an independent company with four platoons of 5 tanks each. Led by a Major we also had our own supply and mechanical departments, so we were actually a week battalion.

Saw the Jagdpanzer Kanone from time to time during autumn Manouvres in my Hometown Uslar in Solling Region and on the Standort Üb Platz Kerstlingerröderfeld from PzJg Btl.44 Göttingen and one time a Belgium Kanonenjägerunit during autumn manouvres, they did what you wrote , select Good firing Pos , fire at target then change Position. The Göttingen Pz Jg Btl. was later transformed into the Pz.Btl. 44 equippet with Leo1 (A-4,A-5? with the welded Turret), after completing military service in a Marine Sich Kp i relocated direct to Göttingen and watched them again when i was out hiking, but this time in their Leo 1s and the former Jäger Btl`s , now Gren Btl`s in Their Marder during training and exercises

The Raketenjagdpanzer was equipped with the french SS11- 1.Generation ATGM. These early ATGM had a minimum Range of 500m. For the case an enemy tank comes closer, you are in serious trouble and the 90mm gun comrade has to come to your aid.Later the Rakatenjadgpanzer was modernized to Jaguar 1 tank-destroyer with the more modern german-french HOT-ATGM (minimum range 75m).These were very capable vehicles and among the best tank-destroyers of the cold war.The Kanonenjagdpanzer became more and more obsolete with introduction of modern soviet tanks like T64 and T72.
164 of the 750 built Kanonenjagdpanzer were converted with the US TOW-missile to Jaguar 2 tank-destroyers.Others were used as observation-vehicles in Artillery- and Mortar-units(Barrel cut off). Some may ended in reserve-units of the Territorial-army? In general the vehicle was reliable ,low profile , very fast and agile cross country. Despite the similiar shape these had not much in common with the ill-fated HS30 based prototypes. F.e.: they were driven by an Mercedes V8-Diesel of 500 HP and not by the Rolls-Royce gasoline engine of the HS30.

  • @PitFriend1
    @PitFriend1 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Seems a bit harsh to call the thing “the worst tank destroyer” since the vehicle in the video was just a prototype and not a production vehicle. That’s why prototypes are built after all, to see how well the design works.

Great video, as usual. It's certainly interesting to highlight some of the unsuccessful prototypes of well-known vehicles.
The 4-5, which was developed out of this vehicle, was really the last of a dying breed. Following the eventual removal of the vehicle from service, the only tank destroyers left in service were rocket-equipped. And in 2006, anti-tank ground units (collectively called the "Panzerjägertruppe") were completely phased out in the German Army as part of its many, many, many restructurings.
Fun fact: Recently, there was a small event at the German Panzermuseum (tank museum) in Munster where they opened some vehicles and permitted visitors to climb aboard. Since I lived in town at the time, I obviously went. Turned out the 4-5 was also among the visitable tanks, and I can verify that the crew space is really quite big - as long as everyone sits.
Which also means that I can verify that it's probably really cramped if it's all just a bit smaller. I visited the 4-5 in a completely empty state, no ammunition or on-board equipment, so it obviously felt a lot bigger than it probably was in actual service.
Anyway. At some point, the Germans - as well as a lot of other NATO partners - asked themselves a rhetorical question: Why deal with the ground and its "hills", "rough terrain", "man-made obstacles" and all those other nuisances when you can just...hover ominously?
Early helicopters did not possess the range advantage nor the reliability of modern air-to-ground missile systems, so the concept of purpose-built anti-tank ground vehicles was kept alive for decades, but with modern fire-and-forget missiles that have an effective range that far exceeds the one of tanks...it's no coincidence the last "Panzerjägertruppe" unit was put out of service roughly around the time the Eurocopter Tiger with its PARS rockets entered service.

To be honest , this felt a bit like a mockery of the early Bundeswehr and i tried to understand why i felt this way. So here i´m going to explain what went wrong in my opinion. Please don´t take this as a harsh critique. I have spent about 3 hours writting this comment and thinking about the various points, so im quite invested in this video and hope that i can help improving the following videos:
    1. Language
As a lot of people already pointed out, the ongoing wrong pronunciation of the german designations feels a bit arrogant. A better solutions could be to try the original pronunciation and following just use a more english sounding abbreviation ( Jpz instead of Jagdpanzer or Stug for Sturmgeschütz) and pronunce the numbers of the designations in english.
Next topic is wording. For example In the first 30 seconds you say that Jagdpanzers(tank destroyers,TD) are "improvised tank hunters with powerful guns mounted on obsolete chassis with poor protection and mediocre mobility". Improvised, obsolete , poor and mediocre have a very negative connotation in my opinion. The Question here is, what the relation of these adjectives is. Improvised? At least an engineer had to construct mounts and a shield for the more powerful gun. Obsolete? Perhaps, but they were available and for their intended function quite sufficient. Poor protection and mediocre mobility? Compared to a Panther, yes indeed. But if you compare the shown Marder 3 (build upon Pzkw 38(t) chassis, Armor: 10-50 mm, pwr/weight: 10.4 kW/ton; according to wikipedia) to a M10 (build upon M4 chassis, Armor: 9.5 - 57.2 mm, pwr/weight: 9.46 kW/ton [M10A1: 11.56 kW/ton];according to wikipedia) neither the protection nor the mobility is poor or mediocre, but rather quite adequate for the intended use.
I think what you tried to imply was: 'Jagdpanzers or tank destroyers were a different kind of armored fighting vehicles. They´ve traded mobility and protection for a more powerful gun. While the early versions of german TD´s relyied on pre war chassis or captured chassis, the later versions used Panzer 3 and Panzer 4 chassis, like the Strumgeschütz or Stug.'
    2. Who is your audience?
That is a topic which is often overlooked not only in youtube video, but also in academic papers. you present a video about a very peculiar AFV for its time. Ask yourself who is gonna watch this video. What does my audience know if youtube proposed this video to them and what do i have to tell my audience to understand it? Wouldn´t somebody who watches a video about the Kanonenjagdpanzer or Kjpz know about the better known tanks of WW2 and if he knows about WW2, shouldn´t he know what happend afterwards in the Cold War? With this thought in mind, is it really necessary to tell how germany was divided up after the war?
A better approach could be to tell your audience simply that germany was diveded in different occupation zones. The western German government was formed out of the American, British and French zones. East germany was formed out of the soviet occupation zone. After the war the relations between the soviets and the western powers declined which resulted in the cold war. 10 years after the capitulation of the Third Reich in 1945, the NATO allies inlcuded the newly found German Bundesrepublik or western German state in the alliance on 9 May 1955, which started the rearmament of western Germany .
    3. Structure
What is important and what is background filler? This topic is kinda similar to the previous one, but rather than asking what the audience bring to the table in form of knowledge, you should ask youself what your main focus shall be. Your video is roughly grouped as follows: ~15% Jpz history , ~ 15% German history after WW2, ~25% HS 30 and Kjpz 1-3, ~ 25 Problems of Kjpz 1-3, 20% Kjpz 4-5 and Rjpz
Therefore your video about the Kjpz 1-3 spends only 50% of its time with the actual vehicle. As proposed in the previous point, the section about german history after WW2 can be reduced. In my opinion the last section can be reduced as well, since it is just just about the subsequently variants of the vehicle (having no better place to adress this, what is a Sturmmaus?).
The unused time could be used for a more elaborated look into the history of the HS30/Kjpz. For example. Why the Germans developed the Hs30, when the Bundeswehr had the Hotchkiss IFV? Did other nation had something better /equivalent/worse? What was the corruption scandal you have mentioned briefly in one sentence and then never mentioned again? Did the Bundeswehr accepted the flaws of the vehicle because of the corruption or did they need the vehicle and used them regardless of the obvious flaws after the testing? Are there some benefits of the design which couldn´t offset the negativ ones? Discuss the pros and cons of the vehicles and compare them to their requiremnts and their adversaries.
    4. Audio/Video discrepancy
Being told that the orientation of the gun of the Kjpz could obstruct the driver or even the gunner himself whilst looking at the HS30 with its 20mm machinecannon, doesn´t feel like there was a lot of planning going when the footage for the respective scene was choosen.
That being said, i think the topic is quite interesting since most channels only discuss the major WW2 tanks. But i think there is a room for improvements in the presentation.

Its okay if you wanna speak out the main german words, as i think its important to do so for cultural reasons
but especialy with the numbers and other stuff that doesnt need translationg "engine, motor" or so...just keep it english.

It seems to me that that a modernized and improved version of the war time Jagd IV or the Stug III with a diesel engine and a Nato compatible gun with that standard ammunition would have a good place to have started. Of course with those great German optics and modern fire controls. Afterall those along with Jagdphanter were the pinnacle of the turretless Tank Destroyer design. The Germans must have still had the blueprints stashed somewhere.

Major hull differences as well, but I'll give you a bit of a pass since the primary identifying feature, the bow of the hull, wasn't shown in most of the photos. The attempt as German pronunciation is just so bad and unnecessary. You can just say HS.30 in English, or go on Google translate and how it pronounce it for you in German so you don’t constantly say it so very wrong.

We can't change what was, we would have to also put ourselves in that time and those limitations, and possibilities it was a tank of the times, some of the others of the Cold War were budget fill-ins too, or stop-gap changes on old designs, compromised, they continued on,, the M26, M47-M48, M60 90mm gun but RPGs took them out all the time, the hind site is always 20 x 20 ya know, so I figure that newer better equipment is always out there, and wanted, but we restrict our selves, and drop the budgets all the time so you get what you get, best be able to use what you have the best you can, and hope the hell it will do the job. We want them to have the best available of course the budget is huge, but necessary, a deterrent if nothing else. Can War End?

      A) The Strv 103 was an MBT, not a tank destroyer. You can argue all you want about turrets and whatnot, what matters is what the user's doctrine says. And their doctrine said it was a tank.
      B) The difference in technology and philosophy between the Strv 103 and Kjpz 1-3 is huge, I don't see how the two can be compared.

Might the selection of the 90mm gun as the vehicles main armament have more to do with the fact that the West German Army was fielding U.S. supplied M47 and M48 tanks, both of which used the 90mm gun, in order to simplify ammunition supply issues.

    • @thhseeking

The 90mm....GUN. Yes, I'd read somewhere that the gun *was* from M47/48s. But that might have been incorrect.

@@mrjockt I dug around and found the reference in an old book from 1977 called "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of the World's Tanks and Fighting Vehicles". It, however, is talking about the Jagdpanzer Kanone 4-5. It says that it uses the M47's gun. The M47's gun is 53 calibres in length, while the 90mm in the Kanonenjagdpanzer 4-5 is 40 calibres in length, so not exactly the same gun. It might have been the 90mm M36 gun built with a shorter barrel by the Germans. The thermal sleeve on the pictures I've seen makes this 90mm look really short.

a mediocre chassis with a mediocre gun ... a failure even in the blueprint stage. The 90mm caliber may have been the standard gun at this time, but this specific gun and HEAT ammo for the KJP 1-3 certainly wasn´t. The gun/ammo had low velocity and therefore it was hard to hit anything reliably. The predecessor in WW2 at least had a competitive gun and good armor ... at least at their time. The KJP was obsolete when it came into service ... and had a lot of problems too. With a large gun and strong armor sure, could have been good, but not with this chassis and engine.
