You might not see this because your comment was from so long ago, but if you do and you would like to have a conversation and/or study, please let me know.
Bro. Washington didn't deny any other scriptures in favor of Acts 2:38. The Holy Spirit is not falling on anyone today, what you see today is emotionalism, what you hear is gibberish being spoken, smh. None of what you see today happened on Pentecost (no, I wasn't there) There were no people bouncing around and running up and down aisles, no one was babbling unintelligently, etc. If you've ever noticed, all of this happens while the instrumental music is going on, as soon as it stops, the running and babbling stops. Bro. Washington's congregation has the Holy Spirit working there, so it is presumptuous of you to assume that He isn't there.
Acts 1:4-5 - Jesus was speaking to the apostles reminding them of the promise He made to them, John 14:26, 15:26-27. This was not on the day of Pentecost.
Acts 2:1-4 - The Holy Spirit came to the apostles on the day of Pentecost. No one else received that baptism.
Acts 8:14-17 - The apostles Peter and John came to Samaria and gave the Holy Spirit to those who had been baptized.
Acts 10:44 - The Holy Spirit came for Peter and those with him to prove that Gentiles were being allowed into the family of God. After that, Cornelius was baptized, verse 47. That's when he was saved and not before.

The holy spirit is a he. The holy Spirit or the miraculous baptism of the holy spirit is not going to come down on us today in cloven tongues as on Pentecost this baptism of the holy Spirit comes from heaven and Man cannot administer that and the baptism in the holy Spirit was not a commandment of the church for salvation it was a fulfillment of Joel 2:28 according to the apostle Peter and Acts chapter 2.

Yahshua/Immanuel/jesus Christ is the same. But the covenants are not the same yesterday today and forever. Nor are the dispensations the same yesterday same today and same forever initially we have the patriarchal dispensation then the mosaic dispensation those 2 totaled 4,000 years. Then the new testament or new covenant was purchased with christs blood john 19:34. We have been in the last days 2000 years..acts chapter 2 ...33ad 9am/3rd hour of the day. 33 A.D. church of christ began 33 ad 9am. this is fulfillment of prophet yoel/joel 2:28..in the last days...... christian or holy spirits dispensation began...jesus said i will send you a comforter..the holy ghost .

AND BE BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF JESUS FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS. He didn't want to say baptized in the name of Jesus. Halfway right is all the way wrong.

Clearly an unbiblical doctrine of cessationism being preached here. Scriptire clearly teaches that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. Moreover, Jesus Christ told the disciples that "You shall receive POWER (dunamis) after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you".
Now if Peter, John, Paul and the early church received the like gift as we do today, why are you saying that the miracle working power of God does not get bestowed upon the believer when they receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit?
You are in error sir, your doctrine of cessationism is in grave error and leading masses astray. Not only that, but you are destroying the faith of some people and causing them to lose faith in the power of God.
The kingdom of God is not in word only but also in power and in the demonstration of the Spirit. The 9 gifts of the Holy Ghost are just as for us today as they were in the early church because Jesus Christ IS that Spirit and He never changes.

With all that being said, who today can raise the dead like the Apostles did? If we all have the same Gifts like the Apostles did, why not put the people that can raise the dead like the Apostles in hospitals so, when people die they can raise them up? How can you walk by faith and NOT BY SIGHT IF YOU SEE MICRACLES happening like they did in the bible? There will be no need for faith. Just like Dr. Washington said in his sermon, the people did not have the bible like we have it today and those miracles were performed to confirmed that they were true men of GOD. When we read the Word of GOD today we believe it and that's it! I don't need no miracle to validate God's word if I am walking and living by faith of God's word.
I remember Jesus telling the Apostles back in Luke
“Now when they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and authorities, DO NOT WORRY about HOW or WHAT you should answer, or WHAT YOU SHOULD SAY. 12 FOR THE Holy Spirit WILL TEACH YOU in that very hour what you ought to say.” Luke 12:11-12
No let's look at the context of the scriptures you are using. We can see that Paul was comparing his preaching (the Word of GOD) to human wisdom. Paul had the power of the Holy Spirit which gave him the words to speak.
"AND MY SPEECH AND MY PREACHING WERE NOT WITH PERSUASIVE WORDS of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men BUT IN THE POWER OF GOD." 1 Cor 2:4 - 5
      3. So once you understand the context of what Paul is preaching about then you can understand that is not of Man's wisdom, but in the power.
"For the kingdom of God is not in word but in power." 1 Cor 4:20
" For Jews request a SIGN (MIRACLES), and Greeks seek after wisdom; BUT WE PREACH Christ crucified, to the Jews a [stumbling block and to the [b]Greeks foolishness," 1 Cor 1:22-23
So just like Dr. Washington taught...
"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." 2 Tim 3:16-17
We are to live by the bible and to believe it as it is. We don't live by signs and wonders today because we have the bible which is the Word of GOD which is Christ Jesus.

      Jesus Christ's very own words:
      (Mark 16:17-18 KJV
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; [18] They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.)
That is what Jesus said would follow those who believe. If you want to take away God's supernatural power from the life of a believer, then all you will be left with is a form of godliness without any power.
I choose to believe Christ's statement rather than Dr. Washington. If you yourself have never witnessed supernatural signs, that still does not negate God's truth or nullify the statement of Christ when He said those who believe in Him shall do the works that He has done and greater. And those words He spoke are still true today just as they were when they left His mouth 2000 years ago.
So please do not use your own experiences of what you have or have not seen to invalidate the word of God. He worked miracles back then and He still does today.
The kind of faith that seeks to analyze and nullify God's power based on one's own experiences is really no faith at all but skepticism.
      Again Jesus Christ's words:
      (John 14:12 KJV
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.)
If you feel that He was not speaking about believers in this modern era, then exclude yourself from His statement but please do not try and exclude those who truly believe.

One other thing to note is that we believe to in order to see the miraculous of God, we do not see it in order to believe God. If any man who professes himself to be a born again believer has not seen the power of God, there is clearly something wrong. Then it means we cannot even believe for the baptism of the Holy Ghost which is in and of itself miraculous, including the utterances that follow.
What kind of a God do you serve if He has changed with the times and changed with the closing of the canon of scripture??
What convincing power will you bring to the unbelievers if all you have is the gospel without the power of the Holy Ghost? Did not Jesus tell us that we are witnesses and so also is the Holy Ghost whom God has given to those who obey Him?
I leave you with this scripture:
      (Romans 3:3-4 KJV
For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? [4] God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.)
Man's unbelief is the reason for failing to witness the supernatural power of God at work because unbelief is displeasing to God. But God's word is true nonetheless.

What kind of a God do you serve if He has changed with the times and changed with the closing of the canon of
scripture?? Answer: Well let’s check the bible to see how I feel about that in verse 8….. (GOD does not change)Remember those who [a]rule over you, who have spoken the word of
God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their
conduct. 8 JESUS CHRIST IS THE SAME YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND
FOREVER. 9 Do not be carried [b]about with various and strange doctrines.
Hebrews 13:7-9What convincing power will you bring to the unbelievers if all you have is the gospel without the power of the Holy
Ghost? Did not Jesus tell us that we are witnesses and so also is the Holy Ghost whom God has given to those who obey Him?
Answer: Let’s go back to the bible once again and see what Jesus thinks….
"And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” JESUS SAID to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO HAVE NOT SEEN AND YET HAVE BELIEVED.” JOHN
20:28-29Now is Jesus a liar reading John 20:29?How conveniently of you to leave out verses 1 and 2. The context of the verses is referring to the WORD OF GOD. Now that I know the what the subject matter is, then the verses can be understood easily because people who don’t believe the oracles of God does that mean the word of GOD is not true. This has nothing to do with working or believing in Miracles.
What advantage then has the Jew, or what is the profit of circumcision? 2 Much in every way!
Chiefly because to them were committed the ORACLES OF GOD. 3 For what if some did not believe? Will
their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect? 4 Certainly not! Indeed, let God be [b]true
but every man a liar. As it is written:
Faith my friend, I walk by faith and not by sight! That is bible...6 So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. 7 For we walk by faith, not by sight. 2 Cor 5:6-7

      Hello Lisa!
      1. WHAT DOES HE MEAN THAT THE GIFTS PASSED AWAY?
"Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is [d]PERFECT has come, then that which is in PART WILL BE DONE AWAY." - 1 Cor 13:8-10
We have the New Testament which is...The perfect law liberty
"But he who looks into the PERFECT law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does." James 1:25
      2. THEN HOW DOES HE EXPLAIN ALL THE HEALINGS AROUND THE WORLD IF THE SUPERNATURAL GIFTS PASSED AWAY? GOD!My friend, like it was explained in the sermon and the bible confirms this.
      a. The people did not have the complete bible like we have it today to know what and how to do God's will.b. The Apostles was given the full measure of power of the Holy Spirit to work miracles to PROVE that they were true men of GOD.c. Believers were given some abilities by the Holy Spirit to prove to the Apostles and others that they were accepted by GOD.I believe in miracles and especially those miracles that happened in the bible, but no man or woman today has the same power or ability today like they did in bible. Also, because we have the PERFECT Law of Liberty, we are to walk by faith and not by sight.
If I see someone working a miracle, that is a sign meaning that I can see it (using sight). Then why would I need FAITH?
I wonder what Jesus thinks about people that need a sign (walking by sight)….Matt. 12:38-39
38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a SIGN from You.”
Watch Jesus...39 But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation SEEKS AFTER A SIGN, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. Also, in this world today....IF A MAN OR WOMAN would have the same power by the Holy Spirit like Jesus and the Apostles had then the people would be giving them and not GOD all the glory, honor and the praise and GOD knows that and that is proven because that is what some of the people did in the bible. Always give GOD the glory and not mankind! Thanks for reading!
