  • David discusses improvised weapons that you might be carrying on your person, and how to use them to defend yourself.

Lycan is a philosophy for life every bit as much as it is a place to train self defense.
David has spent more than 30 years in and around the martial arts industry. Starting with more traditional martial arts such as Tae Kwon Do, Goju-ryu karate and classical (Japanese) Jiu Jitsu, David has since expanded into various other systems along the way. He has trained extensively in Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do, Israeli Krav Maga, various systems of Filipino Martial Arts such as Kali, old Keysi Fighting Method, and Defence Lab fight science.
David has also spent a considerable amount of time in teaching several of these systems. It is his belief that we all have the potential to not only have the means and skill to defend ourselves in dire circumstances, but that we should also use our training as a channel to better improve our everyday lives. David considers himself a lifetime student, and while he may be teaching, he is always learning and trying to improve.

Great video man! Couple of things I have learned being fit over 50 now: 1. Always get or make a trainer tool. 2. Practice it everytime you work out. 3. Flashlights are awesome 4. I always carry a mouthpiece too! putting it in has made aggressive people just walk away from me! Pretending the phone is recording and pointing it at them is a great deterrent too! LOL

Not anymore, but when I was a kid Yeah! Middle school walking to and from, the mouthpiece worked great! Flashlight comes from when I jog early in the morning and people don't put their dogs on a leash. I just flash the light at them and they stop running and barking at me. The cell phone idea comes from witnessing and watching other's events. and the trainer tool is the only way to practice safely. Ya, better safe than sorry. Everyone thinks nothing is going to happen to them... until it does.

@@BMO_Creativewise words, your advice is solid! It does no good to carry any self defense tool if you have not practiced with it extensively. Equally important is access; you will most likely have very little time to bring your tool into play! Lastly, little psychological tricks using props like your phone or mouthguard, are gold!

Good video, I very much enjoyed that. I've been interested in this subject since I read "Black Medicine : Weapons At Hand" when I was teenager way back in the 1980s. Though I'm pretty sure much of that book was written very much tongue-in-cheek.
Lots of objects which don't look like they could be used as weapons actually can be due to the principle used in W E Fairbairn's "matchbox attack". Much of the training employed in breaking boards, bricks etc is to remove your fear of damaging your hand. Holding something in your hand, even something as innocuous as a matchbox, reduces that subconscious fear of hurting yourself and you hit your attacker a lot harder than you would otherwise.
The thing you said about pens is interesting. I was training with my instructor a few moths ago and we were going over some grappling. We train in our normal street clothes so I was wearing a t shirt and pair of cargo trousers and boots.
We stopped because he felt a sharp pain in the side of his head. I had forgotten to take my metal pen out of one of the side pockets of my trousers. It had taken a little chunk out of his scalp and he was bleeding. And that was through the canvas of my trouser pocket. So I have a new found respect for the metal pen as an improvised weapon.
Thanks for putting up the video. Keep 'em coming.
