If only all teachers were like this guy.
Everyday / practical analogies are a must.

Very interesting! I'm going to try the unplugging experiment, but will use an electric dryer. They still utilize coiled heating elements, whereas most modern toasters I've seen appear to be simple resistive loads. Possibly you could talk about the smaller arc created as a resistive load is disconnected, and the huge arc at power stations as a grid segment is connected/disconnected. Thank you for the videos!

When you abruptly try to cut off the current in an inductor the energy stored will try to charge the stray capacitor at the breaking point. 1/2 L I^2 = 1/2 C V^2. Since the value of C is very small, the value of V will have to be very large. And this value of V will exceed the breakdown voltage of the air and pull electrons out of the molecules. When they recombine you will see the light emitted from from the molecules. THAT is the spark.

I know turning off devices without unplugging them first is hard on the device, so I never do that, but just to see this happen......gonna do it anyway. hahaha

This is why my house explodes when theres a gas leak. Dont adj thermostat, switch on a light or make toast.
