Just want to add my two cents here. If anyone wishes to dive into Sadhak Sanjeevani by Swami Ramsukhdas Ji from Gita Press, Gorakhpur, I would highly recommend them to begin with Gita Prabodhini. A concise version of Sadhak Sanjeevani. Hari Om Tat Sat. 🙏
It is apt to make a critical appraisal of every religious text in this age of knowledge. One should note that those were all created at a time of limited knowledge and awareness about the world. In fact ,they weren't even aware of human societies beyond their contact. It is really mindless to glorify things of the past without understanding it's limitations
Did you notice the beauty of the comments? The discussion is about which version to read of which book. It's not just a single book with multiple translations. The power of interpretation is the freedom in sanAthana Dharma. No one said the other is wrong, everybody says this one should be more correct. The interpretation clearly means "I perceive Brahmam this way". Lovely Hare Krishna
I'm going to chime in here: I've been a yoga teacher for 20+ years and actively study Advaita Vedanta ( weekly classes, etc.) I recently decided to learn Sanskrit (approx 9 months ago). It's incredibly difficult! I already knew all the letters & also pronunciation & a limited vocabulary (100/200 words). It's THE most difficult subject have EVER studied!! I'm in a formal class with a University professor & we're using Goldman's Devavanipravesika. I made a commitment to the class and my studies, so I'm not quitting; but we lost over half the class in the 1st 5 months. I pray to Goddess Saraswati every time I open my books. My sole intention is to read Bhagavad Gita in Sanskrit & bhashya. I'm hoping in 3 years, I will feel a degree of skill; not mastery, but a degree of agility w the language. Just FYI.

Thank you for this video on swami ji talking about different translations. I came to know about tapasyananda ji’s Gita few dads back and now I got to know other translations also thanks to this video. Before this video I only knew about AC bhaktivedanta’s Gita. I also think I’ve watched this video before but forgot about what was in it. So I think I need to watch it again because swami ji is a great orator and pleasant to listen to. I hope there is a link for the the full talk.
Gita is not something that we read once & forget. It is for the rest of our lives. So, the wise thing to do is to learn Sanskrit first, which is a very interesting & amazing language. The added advantages are that one also discovers the brilliant & beautiful Kalidasa & others, the absolutely brilliant Sankaracharya, the simple Valmiki Ramayana, etc, to say nothing of the happiness one experiences in being able to recite the slokas & prayers without mistakes and understanding the meanings when the purohit recites mantras at poojas, weddings, sraaddh etc.....
Adi Shankaracharya's Geeta Bhashyam is necessary reading. He provides a view of Gita encompassing his knowledge of vedas and upanishads. Simple translations won't teach you much.
Bhagavad Gītā comes in a disciplic succession (evam parampara praptam). Adi Sankaracharya is an incarnation of Lord Siva and he is not in the parampara, so how come his bhasyam is bonafide?
All the Gita recommendatons are very good. The thought of the book ismore important than the language. One may read the Gita in any language he or she feels comfortable. Swami Ranganathanandaji's translation is unique.
My view is that you should first read the Vasistha Yoga which is a discourse between Lord Rama and the Sage Vashistha. This simplifies the understanding of the Gita.
bhaktyā mām abhijānāti - yāvān yaś cāsmi tattvataḥ tato māṁ tattvato jñātvā - viśate tad-anantaram Only a real bhakta of Lord Krishna, His pure devotee, can give a bonafide transtaltion of Bhagavad Gita

Adi Shankara's Gita Bashyam is in such a way because he experienced every happening to be an act of illusion so he remarked "as if" in each of his Bhashyam. Ref: Swamy Vedanta Desika's Tatparya Chandrika. Shankara being an advaiti it is expected.

Books related to Bhagavadgita by Sri Aurobindo, Abhinavagupta, then there’s Sankara Bhashya and many commentaries on the same by Ramkrishna mission, those are definitely way better than Diskcon’s edition.
And what is the result of your reading those distorted Gitas? Did you become free from material entanglement and become a devotee of Lord Sri Kṛṣṇa? Lol

We should always read the commentary of siddha acharyas from authentic disciplic succesions like sri ramanujacharya, sri vallabhacharya, srila prabhupada, sri madhvacharya and many more such glorius acharyas. It is beacause they are realised souls who have lived the teachings of bhagavad gita. Bhagavad gita is not just a mere literature but it's the essence of the one message of krishna which he reveals at the end that is surrender to him and become his devotee by always remebering him. Bhagavad gita has to be understood as it is. Just like if i want to prepare for JEE exams, i have to read a book written by a professor or any kind of person like him who has a lot of knowledge in the field. I can't read a book written by any coster monger on jee. That is the differnce between the commentarys of Authentic acharyas and the translations of mere sanskrit scholars or self-understood gita. Pls try to understand my point without just bursting out in the reply comments.
I don't know which Bhagavad Gita is best in Kannada (because I'm not a Kannadiga) but I can recommend a good and reliable translation and commentary of Bhagavad Gita, and that is Bhagavad Gita: the song of God by Swami Mukundananda.
Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna is a SUPREME elucidation of the Gita, Bhagavatam, Narada Bhakti Sutras and the QUINTESSENCE of the Upanishads from a Neo-Vedantic perspective.
@@The92Abhi The entire "Sri Ramakrishna, the Great Master" Text by Swami Sharadananda is an evidence in this regard. To be specific, a lady by name "Bhairavi Brahmani", a person well-versed in Vaishnavaite Scriptures and also in 63 types of Tantric Sadhana, and who was a wandering woman in a spirit of surrender, happened to come to Dakshineshwar and see Sri Ramakrishna. Seeing His exalted Spiritual State, she stayed for about 9 months, initiated Sri Ramakrishna into the 63 Tantric sadhana types, and bore witness to His attaining the Highest Spiritual State during each of those 63 Types of sadhana. She openly talked to everyone who visited Dakshineshwar at that time as to how only an Incarnation of God can reach perfection in such a short time in all the 63 Types of sadhana. This included sitting on the lap of a woman of exquisite beauty at midnight and attaining to spiritual ecstasy losing all body-consciousness and murmuring "Mother, Mother".
@@The92Abhi While Kshudiram (who became the father of Sri Ramakrishna, posterior to the incident being recounted here) was returning from Gaya after performing the shraddha ceremonies for his departed ancestors, he had a vivid dream one night, in which Gadadhar (Lord Rama's Name at Gaya) appeared and told Kshudiram that Himself, the Lord, would be born to him as his son. Roughly around the same time Chandramani (who became the mother of Sri Ramakrishna, posterior to the incident being recounted here) experiened a Light emanating from ShivLing and entering her womb and she felt that she had conceived. This incident directly proves that Sri Ramakrishna was an incarnation of Rama at Gaya.

But i would suggest to learn Sanskrit which gives us freedom to understand any text at our own level of knowledge. Hence reading it again will give different perspective with time and ones life experience.
At our own level contradicts the first, middle and primary instructions of the Gita. They are instructions. Sri Arjuna, a very advanced and Vedic soul, was trying to figure things out on his own and realized he was bewildered and cried out. In his first instruction Sri Krsna states "anarya justam asvargyam" that although the words were very learned they represented at most book knowledge. And in response to this Sri Arjuna "sisyaham" submitted as a student. This theme of gurutattva is throughout and reaches another head in the the fourth adhyaha discussing how one should find vedantitattvidastattvam on e who has seen and realized the truth, and establish a student-teacher relationship and submit relevant questions. There is no where in the Divine Gita that states one's own perspective will work, on the contrary we continue in this predicament "nityabandha" because of choosing our finite opinions and those of other finite conditioned souls.
The only version we should read is published from "Geeta Press" but refrain from ISKCON's version as they have heavily altered Shrimad Bhagwat Gita and made it a Bhakti Centric Scripture.....
It IS a bhakti centric scripture lol. Have you ecen read it? Shloka on shloka has been praised for bhakti. Also, the Geeta Press version is Advaita version, Iskcon version is Gaudiya vaishnava version. There are commentaries from even Tantric perspective by the likes of Abhinavagupta.
Absolutely right. That's what it is. Bhakti centric. Krishna asks Arjuna to become His bhakta. Maam ekam sharanam gatha. Surrender unto me. So its the best Gita. Bcos actual transformation is happening all over the world only thru iskcon Geeta. All others may be a finger count.
Always read GITA from a devotee who spennt whole life to love Krishna & preach Krishna. ISKCON Gita made people devotees. EG see the western devotess. Rest is ur choice.
1) Bhagavat Gita Saram by Bhagawan Ramana Maharshi with just 40+ verses in Tamil translated into English is the SWIFTEST way of gaining the QUINTESSENTIAL knowledge of the Gita; 2) Essays on the Gita by Sri Aurobindo received and written from the Overmind, the Region of Krishna, is the most comprehensive Commentary on the Gita as a continuum of the purport of the entire Gita without specific reference to the individual verses themselves; incidentally, this would also improve one's English. Namaste.
My personal experience was to listen to Geeta first ( shruti ) chapter wise and shloka wise ,there are various web sites and youtube channels .Don't listen "Geeta Saar" most of the time its totally wrong or in bits and pieces .Once we complete listening all 18 chapters then it would be easy to read it with interest.

Read as many versions of Bhagavad Gita as possible. Only that can bring real wisdom. Not parroting what someone has already said. If you see the great teachers of Vedanta, they didn't follow any particular tradition, they gave their own original insights which later became a tradition among followers. Only people who do not want to put the effort become followers. So read everybody's interpretation. But ultimately, one has to develop one's own understanding.
Swami ji forgot to mention Bhagavad Gita by Gita Press Gorakhpur in Hindi, Padachhed Anvay, Bhasha Sadharan Teeka Sahit which is ideal for beginners and Most Authentic Next Best is The Holy Gita by Swami Chinmayananda Translated in Hindi by Swami Tejomayananda. Never read Bhagavadgita as it is by ISKCON. It's totally distorted, Painted with one brush, Samatva yog being referred to as Bhakti yog, and so many
Sadhak Sanjeevni is not in line with Vedanta! Actually, Im a big fan of Swami Sarvapriyananda ji. But I'm surprised how Swamiji has recommended this book. Maybe in good faith and its in Hindi and so he might not have read it personally. Otherwise, no teacher of Vedant would recommend Sadhak sanjeevani.
It is ridiculous to follow or appreciate something which is having so different versions and which cannot be understood by anyone without someone else's explanation
Many different versions exist but they are different versions of the translation. The Gita verses are the same in all…everyone understands according to their mental faculty
Yes completely distorted. That's why all around the world people are adapting to sanatan dharma. Bcos of Prabhupada Geeta. So. Distorted that so many people have taken up seriously. So many lives are transforming. So distorted.
Pls read the conclusive instruction of geeta. Which lord finally tells arjun....his ultimate instruction. 18.64 and 18.65. and u would know why bhakti is the ultimate instruction.
Of course Swamiji knows much more but my recommendation would be that Gita is a Vaishnava text and a bonafide Vaishnava Sampradaya version must be choosen over those which are inclined towards advaita vedanta.
There is no vaishnav or shaiva or shakta. These are all human creations made by the ego, gita is not a human creation, it's said by someone who has transcended his human nature. And lord Krishna never said it is a vaishnav text, in fact some of the best translations of the gita are the ones made by people not belonging to a sect.

Are you really saying this ?. No one added casteism to geeta. Geeta rejects casteism, it endorsed varna. Varna is a composition of mind, intellect and ego. Entire geeta is talking about how satva, rajas and thamas nature's of mind intellect and ego manifests as a guna of a person hence causing ones varna by performing actions accordingly. And you are a vaishnava ?. Shame on you. I being a guy from non Brahmin kula can comprehend the essence of geeta, then what's wrong with you?.

@@stefos6431 "evam parampara praptam". The point is if we refer to Gita and reject even 1 pct, then why bother with an imperfect book if we want perfection. If we reject the parampara then we reject the essential process, given by the speaker, through which one can come to understand the Gita and through that understanding and mature self realization "pratyaksavagama" one can by revelation, progressively, full understand God. Srila Prabhupada wrote the Bhagavad Gita As It Is, there were plenty of editions of the Gita out there in the Western world. But, until Srila Prabhupada wrote the Bhagavad Gita As It Is, no one was becoming a devotee of Lord Krishna. However, when Srila Prabhupada wrote the Bhagavad Gita As It Is, thousands of people in the Western world transformed their lives and have become devotees of Lord Krishna. Why is Srila Prabhupada’s Gita the only Gita that has had this effect? Because only Srila Prabhupada presented the message of the Gita without adding or subtracting anything.Srila Prabhupada's purports leave no room for speculation. He has painstakingly shed light on all the verses, in accordance with the previous acharyas and his own personalby realizations. Srila Prabhupada states emphatically what needs to be done to benefit from the sublime texts of the Bhagavad Gita. He emphasizes what Krishna emphasizes, he stresses what Krishna stresses, he downplays what Krishna downplays, and he ignores anything that Krishna ignores. If you want a detailed, consistent and scholarly presentation of ofBhagavad Gita that will give you practical and pragmatic solutions to the problems of birth, old age, disease and death; that will give you a clear understanding on the hierarchy, position and functions of the many different 'Hindu gods'; if you want to know how the material world works under the three modes of nature; if you want to know what should be done and what should be avoided; if you want to know what is the goal of life and how to achieve it; if you want to develop true devotion for the Supreme Lord; if you want to know what is beyond Brahman and what is its source, there is no better book on the planet than Bhagavad Gita As It Is, nor will there be for the next 427,000 years. If you want to hang on to any misconceptions you may have that are not consistent with Krishna's declaration of Himself being the absolute truth, then don't go anywhere near it; you will find it tiring and not to your liking. the The purports are written without adulterating the original meaning of Bhagavad-gita. There is no personal agenda or propaganda behind the purports of Srila Prabhupada or the translation of the verses for making it more authentic, word-to-word translation is given for every verse. The knowledge given in the book is how it has travdoeledtravelled in the guru-parampara right from Lord Krishna Himself. There is a standard process for receiving the knowledge of the Gita from a lineage of self-realized spiritual teachers. Srila Prabhupada was himself a spiritual teacher, and he received the same knowledge he is presenting from his guru. His guru got that knowledge from his guru, and so on. The lineage of gurus and teachers can be traced back to Krishna himself, and because Krishna is perfect, whatever knowledge is faithfully repeated from him is also perfect. This is what a lineage of gurus does: gurus present the knowledge of the Gita faithfully to their students as they heard from their gurus. The students then become gurus and teach their students. In this way, the knowledge is passed down from Krishna himself to the current generation without adulteration. Unfortunately, people want to reject this authorized method of receiving knowledge and instead concoct their own interpretations of the Gita, which will be imperfect because the conditioned soul has the four defects of: Imperfect senses The tendency to fall into illusion The tendency to commit mistakes The tendency to cheat others As Srila Prabhupada is one of the only gurus to present the Gita according to the authorized process, I would say his edition of the Gita is the best (though myself and other ISKCON devotees also respect the Gitas of other genuine teachers such as Ramanuja, Madhva, Vishnu Swami, Nimbarka, etc.). All Glories To Srila Prabhupada.
Dear Gourav, First of all, you are biased with ISKON! Second is, You are wrong, Srila Prabhupada's Gita Translations are not perfect, He(or may be ISKON) have misinterpreted many many verses of GITA as per their own interest. I am saying this after reading GITA As it is Gujarati & Hindi Translation. Third, Indeed that gita's awareness had spread because of Srila Prabhupada, ISKON & their work, and I really appreciate it! And Gita was already well known and acknowledged by various scholars across the Sanatan Dharma. Fourth and most important, Just by reading Gita, or any of it's edition/interpretation/commentary, one can not understand what Krishna is saying until and unless one gets in touch with the master/guru who live his/her life like Krishna is saying in Gita!!
@@rampathak1784 which verses have been misinterpreted? Name one verse which has been misinterpreted. And you haven't understood Bhagavad Gītā at all. Sorry to say this Swamiji but I am deeply disappointed that you are recommending people to read a translation of the The Bhagavadgītā instead of asking them to learn sanskrit and read the Gita in sanskrit. If Oppenheimer could make the effort to learn sanskrit in the midst of making the atomic bomb, and read the Gita in sanskrit, why not your followers? Sanskrit is an easy language to learn, you just need to believe so, which we all know is the hardest first step when learning something new.
Sadly, Ramakrishna Mission has moved away a little from the teachings and path of Shri Ramakrishna Paramahansa and Swami Vivekananda in order to become populist, attract more "secular" followers and project itself as "embracing all religions". So they pander to the gallery! Very agonizing.
Oppenheimer was a person with above average intelligence. He could learn Sanskrit while working in the atomic bomb. Do you really feel the pressure on the common man these days to bring food to the table? All their energy goes into surviving. Most people don't even have time to properly do Puja aur properly immerse themselves in spirituality. And you expect them to learn Sanskrit? Few people can afford to spare enough brain power to learn another language. The plate of the common man is full with the troubles of Samsara.

@Chatterbong-travel I have read and read the Bhagavad Gita daily..... It is a text of Bhagvan's own words....not some mayavada text like you propose.... Every Sanskrit word has multitudes of meanings and imbeciles like max muller and other indologists have taken nonsensical meanings of the words, out of the context and inner meaning etc to give nonsensical translations of Vedas. Others have followed them with nonsensical translations of Puranas, Ithihasas, and Bhagavad Gita.....with the single aim of throwing off the general hindus away from Bhagavan. By subscribing to mayavada which is the Buddhist way of thought in Vedanta garb....You too propose the same.... Bhagavan himself directly proclaims himself as both the Supreme Brahman (supreme goal) and the path too....and asks Arjuna to surrender unto him in the 66 th shloka of Bhagavad Gita.... He explains the difference between him and us and as to why, how, when he takes avataras....in the 4th adhyana.... from 5th shloka to 14th shloka .... The power of interpretation is the freedom in sanAthana Dharma. No one said the other is wrong, everybody says this one should be more correct. The interpretation clearly means "I perceive Brahmam this way". Lovely

Learninh Sanskrit after a certsin age is not easy! More important to know the essence of Geetha than learning Sanskrit.
Just FYI.
Only Bhagavad Geeta As it is, it has simple word meaning along with the translation. Very simple. Most of the westerners accepted this Geeta only
The one by abhay charan is the most useless version...

What does he say
Bhagavad Gītā comes in a disciplic succession (evam parampara praptam). Adi Sankaracharya is an incarnation of Lord Siva and he is not in the parampara, so how come his bhasyam is bonafide?
Srila Prabhupada's books from the Worldwide Hare Krishna movement.
NOPE.
All the Gita recommendatons are very good. The thought of the book ismore important than the language. One may read the Gita in any language he or she feels comfortable. Swami Ranganathanandaji's translation is unique.

Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna is a SUPREME elucidation of the Gita, Bhagavatam, Narada Bhakti Sutras and the QUINTESSENCE of the Upanishads from a Neo-Vedantic perspective.
Could you give any evidence that Ramakrishna is an avatara?
This theme of gurutattva is throughout and reaches another head in the the fourth adhyaha discussing how one should find vedantitattvidastattvam on
e who has seen and realized the truth, and establish a student-teacher relationship and submit relevant questions. There is no where in the Divine Gita that states one's own perspective will work, on the contrary we continue in this predicament "nityabandha" because of choosing our finite opinions and those of other finite conditioned souls.
Most of us understand only intellectually

If you see the great teachers of Vedanta, they didn't follow any particular tradition, they gave their own original insights which later became a tradition among followers. Yes Most authentic .
Unfortunately, people want to reject this authorized method of receiving knowledge and instead concoct their own interpretations of the Gita, which will be imperfect because the conditioned soul has the four defects of:
Imperfect senses
The tendency to fall into illusion
The tendency to commit mistakes
The tendency to cheat others
As Srila Prabhupada is one of the only gurus to present the Gita according to the authorized process, I would say his edition of the Gita is the best (though myself and other ISKCON devotees also respect the Gitas of other genuine teachers such as Ramanuja, Madhva, Vishnu Swami, Nimbarka, etc.).
All Glories To Srila Prabhupada.

Second is, You are wrong, Srila Prabhupada's Gita Translations are not perfect, He(or may be ISKON) have misinterpreted many many verses of GITA as per their own interest.

Gentle note: Never read bhagavad gita as it is (by ac bhakti vedant swami prabhupaad, founder of ISKCON) ❌️
Best commentary (for novices): Jnaneshwari bhashya, Madhusudan Saraswati
For advanced learners: Sankar bhashyam

Thank you. No disrespect to swami prabhupad but I think that has been much hyped. I also didn’t know much about other translations until few days back.
THANKYOU SO MUCH
WE ALL ARE VERY GRATEFULL TO YOU 🙏
HDG A.C. Bhakti vedant Swami srila Prabhupada ki jai 🤞
Fully agree with you 👍
@@AbirChakraborty2004 You understand difference between sampradaya-s?
Gitapress and RKM versions are Sankara Advaita versions.
Prabhupada swami version is Gaudiya vaishnava version.
Just because the channel is named “Know to grow” you don’t have to say “you know” so many times 🎉
I think it is a wrong advice to start reading in Sanskrit. People will not simply do it. Everybody is not Oppenheimer.
Swami sarvapriyananda is one of the foremost proponents of vedanta living today who can engage with noted intellectuals in the field. He is giving practical advise....suggest you stop.judging
Reading is important. Not the language
All intellectual gymnastic - 0 practicality
I’ve read it. Really useless. It says ~ Do the worst of sins and have my prashad . All sins will be forgiven.
Ridiculous.
May you attain good command on any language 😅
@@KnowtoGrow4354 he is just bluffing... he hasn't read it...just doing time pass comments
Comment is inspired by alcohol
Where is it said to sin?
May be you have read ISKON Gita 😂😂😂. There you will find all sorts of distorted & polluted verses.
my gita from
devdutt pattanaik
❤Reading wrong person
Noo man
Devdutt does not believe anything on the traditional lines.
Wrong person
Business gita 😂
He first directs one to avoid books from any particular lineage but recommends all translations from the advaita lineage....you see the hypocrisy.
He rejected lineages...like means Dvaita and Vishistadvaita, Gaudiya, and other Bhakti lineages.....while promoting his school of thought Advaita.
Dear people....
Just go with the Bhagavad Gita from Gita press Gorakhpur...It has the most simple and direct explanations for each shloka and some notes as to the linked slokas from other adhyayas.
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼జై శ్రీరామ🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
He also suggested the chinmaya mission and sadhak Sanjeevani from the Gita press.
Please don't be so quick to judge others. 🙏
@shivakrishna1743
Stick to Bhagavad Gita....the simple translation....by Gita press Gorakhpur....
Chinmaya Mission is also affiliated to the speaker's favoured advaita vedanta....
the only saving grace is Swami Ramsukhadas.
Maharaj ji, suggested what he read. He suggested to start with Sw. Swaroopananda Ji's version. Because it is word by word meaning no ideology. So far, Gita press is considered it is also a beautiful one
Hypocrisy is a very strong word to use in this case ! You didn’t read giya atall if uou think sarvapriyananda is a hypocrite.
Fyi if anyone even feels geeta is a dwaita text plz run away from him
@Chatterbong-travel
I have read and read the Bhagavad Gita daily.....
I can give reference to several slokas where Sri Krishna said that he himself is the ultimate......
7.6, 7.7, 7.10, 2.30, 4.6, 4.7, 4.8, 4.9, 4.24,, 4.40, 8.16, 8.9, 9.18, 9.25, 10.12, 10.42, 10.39, 10.8, 10.6, 10.32, 13.23, 15.13, 15.15, 18.66....whole 10th adhyaya, whole 11th adhyaya....etc and many more....infact too many to cite here.....read the whole of the Bhagavad gita....if you care and if you can....then you will know.
