This popped in my recommended just now and wow. Talk about timing. I have been really struggling with being away from my family, completing my degree, graduating during a pandemic, job/intern searching, and just existing at a generally unhappy point in my life. I never cry from watching things, in fact, I make it a point not to cry during sad movies haha, but this... this made me tear up. The McElroy's will always have a special place in my heart, but this was something that particularly impacted me today. Spooky how on point the youtube algorithm is sometimes!
A lot of people (especially young people) need to hear this. Sure you get the odd lucky, privileged person whose life runs smoothly and turns out just like they planned. But so many more of us come up against events and circumstances which make the path we dreamed of impossible. We have to adapt and change and give up on certain things, and we have to live through periods of great difficulty. But if you just keep moving forward other things will arrive. More often than not you eventually end up in a place you would never have expected to be, you never planned for - and that place is amazing. Many successful, happy people out there have had moments of absolute despair, have lived through stress, uncertainty, rejection, grief, illness, and everything else under the sun. My advice in those moments is to picture your future self in the best timeline, looking back at you with warmth and sympathy, holding out a hand and encouraging you to keep going. Also just keep doggedly reaching out for support when you need it, giving support when you can, and staying connected with people even if your brain is telling you to cut off, isolate and 'not be a bother'. Something I've found myself saying to reassure others that might help some people here too: Things might not be like you planned. I've dealt with someone close to me recently that's coming to a point where they have to face that they may not accomplish their dreams. It sucks. it's unfair. It's not what they thought things would turn out like and even the possibility of failure is terrifying to them. But, I always have to say, even if things don't turn out, you're not hopeless. people can grow and change and respond to their situation and if something doesn't turn out like you thought you're not out of options. Whether it's in your career or relationship or with your family or friends, it's so easy to get caught up in the idea that "If this one bad thing happens, its all over" when really, most of the time it isn't. Careers change, relationships begin and end, friends and family come and go, nothing is ever constant. Dont get so caught up in the way you want things to be that you miss what things could be, or even should be. It won't happen the way you plan.

This is very very true, on an individual level, a great poster i saw once was "you've made it through every one of your bad days". On a humanity historical level, not a single thing happening now is something that hasn't happened before in the tens of thousands of years of human existence, it just is happening with new technologies around. And it might not necessarily reassure you to hear that humanity in general has gotten through thousands of wars and diseases and natural disasters, but i personally enjoy knowing that there are thousands of people throughout history all over the world that have had the same fears and troubles that i have had. I like not feeling so distant and removed from my parents and their parents and their parents and their grandparents and their grandparents, all of my ancestors, the thousands of people im directly related to and the thousands more i am related to distantly, people living in the victorian era and the middle ages and in early rome and the indus river valley, people who invented paper or crossed the bering straight or painted the cave art in altamira or sailed from island to island in the pacific, all of those billions of people ever alive, i have faced the same obstacles and had the same concerns as they all did too, and at that point they are no longer theoretical historical figures to me, but real family and friends that have managed to survive in this world just like i have

It’s stress. And it will end. But in this moment? Feeling awful is an incredibly valid response. You don’t have to be a beacon of hope. You can just exist right now, and keep on existing until we’re past this.

And to sweeten the pot, massive contagious diseases; particularly the Bubonic Plague, have catalysts for great social progress. Death is the great equalizer and peasants and kings bleed the same way. With this knowledge the people before were inspired to redraw the lines of their societies in more egalitarian ways. There’s a lot of research on this stuff, check it out if you’re curious.
