I was out foraging nettle the other day and my knee hurt so I tried it. It only stung for a few minutes then the pain almost completely went away for a few hours. Needless to say I have stung myself a few times now. It's like eating spicy food, it burns but feels good🥴

I know that it helps with arthritis and joint pain.
I did not realize that it was growing in a certain area of my yard. Not knowing which team it'll look like I thought it was a non useful plant. AKA: weed.
As I went to pull the plant up out of the ground of course I got STUNG!!!!
In turn I took a closer look so I could identify it.
Due to having to go somewhere within an hour of time I just left everything alone.
I have been having arthritis problems with my hand and at the end of the day it dawned on me that I had been pain free all day from the time I had touched the plant.
Since that moment I have been trying to learn more about it so I can try and help others.

My introduction to nettles was when I moved to Idaho. I was bird hunting with a friend when I waded into a large stand of plants. I was wearing a T-shirt. My friend looked at me in horror, I couldn’t understand what was wrong. He explained to me I was standing in stinging nettles. For some reason they didn’t effect me. I saw nettle root supplements and investigated, now they use the whole plant. I take capsules twice a day.

I knew of a man who had really horrible arthritis and would use a certain scorpion type to sting him every few months in order to control his arthritis. He said he'd never felt better since he began putting up with arthritis by using the scorpions to help him. He just happened to have been stung by one while in his bare feet and said a couple days later his arthritis was nearly completely gone. So he tested the theory that it may've helped by collecting one and allowing it to sting him. It worked like a charm for a few months.

I now live in the desert, so haven’t really thought about harvesting nettles, But found dry nettle leaves at local Food Coop and began making nettle tea. It has made a huge difference, My love affair with nettles has been renewed. Looking forward to your E-book. Thanks so much.

I just made a vegetable soup (ribollita) and not having any kale (cavolo nero) I used what I could forage: mallow and nettles along with normal white cabbage that I had on hand. Yum. Nettles are one of my favorite foods, I have been foraging nettles for 40 years having been introduced to nettles by my Italian friends back in 1976. I cultivated a patch for years and every time I moved, I started another patch. I have now finally gotten a patch started here on Leros Island, Greece, having learned when and where to get them going (I discovered them growing really well in the "manure pile" of my neighbor goat herder!!) I was pleased as punch that I now can have them fresh at least part of the year (they die back during our harsh summer weather, but come back!) . I love nettles in Fritattas and make a garlic nettles risotto. I also just blanch them, toss them with very very lightly sauteed garlic and LOTS of EV olive oil. Thank you for this indepth "study" on stinging nettles!

Excellent video, Rosalee, danke. I am an old woman from Germany living in ME. and my mother, who was an herbalist, died a healthy 100 years old. She never used aspirin, or any painkillers. We ate nettles like spinach with eggs. I have a very difficult time here in US finding nettles. I found some a few years ago on a private property and dug them up. They are growing now in my garden, but not nearly enough for my needs. To me they are more precious than the most beautiful rose especially since I have bad arthritis in my knees. I do rub them with the nettles - but what will I do in the winter? Btw. the seeds are extremely healthy as well - who needs expensive chia seeds?

Thanks! I've been armchair learning about herbs for several years now and believe if I chose only ten or so herbs to learn very well that stinging nettles would be one of them. I simply want to mention that in Matthew Wood's The Book of Herbal Wisdom that nettles were used to make cloths, rope and netting. And, that the linen is of the finest quality found in burial sites in the steppes of western China that are over 2000 years old in perfect condition. During WWII the Germans' uniforms were made of nettle and are still in perfect shape. I think stinging nettles can be grown on a mass scale, many business opportunities...

Hemp has been an industrial grown crop a century ago, rope for sailing ships , linens, modern uses include ,car body strength alternative to fibreglass, linen, construction materials. It's been tried and promoted in Saskatchewan but as usual, big established Corp. throw stumbling blocks into the competition.Oil industry, rope and auto body panels became industry standards.

Yes! Thank you so much for this information. I think we have nettle growing in our yard, but I am not totally sure. Seems like what we have has a lot more scary looking needles....I better get your book and see an illustration . One thing I have to say, I appreciate your voice and I don't think I heard even one "Ummm" or other word whisker!! Amazing! So refreshing. I subscribed and am off to watch the rest of your videos.

I blend nettle leaves, aloe vera and mint and/or oregano. I then strain the mixture and mix will coconut oil and various organics like thyme oil, camphor and tea tree oil. It makes a great rub for arthritis and rheumatism that doesn't prevent cartilage regeneration.

We just moved to 2 acres of land, and I'm pretty sure I've found quite a bit of nettle growing on it. My husband is concerned about me just picking a wild plant and eating though. But I have both your books, so I'm pretty confident, I'm right. Also, my allergies are beyond horrible, so I really want to start using nettle.

It's always good to consult multiple sources when identifying a plant for the first time. The thing with nettle is that it has key ID qualities, opposite toothed leaves, square hollow stem, etc. But also that it stings!

You’ll be amazed how nettles take away seasonal allergies. My wife, a medical doctor, is now a believer. I steam the top, tender portion of the plant, purée it and save some in the fridge and freeze the rest in ice cube tray or small containers. After frozen you can empty them into a gallon plastic bag. We use them in smoothies and add to soups.
